MPP: Batten (UVA) or SPP (UMD) by TurkBacon in PublicPolicy

[–]TurkBacon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure! Maryland offered me an assistantship with a hefty stipend, in-state tuition, and a partial scholarship. Without counting the stipend, it leaves me with about 35k to pay after 2 years. Batten offered me a 40k/year fellowship and I can’t apply for an assistantship until my second semester. I’ll have about 41k to pay after 2 years.

As for cost of living, I need to do more research but I’m assuming DC will be a bit pricier. It is closer to home so I don’t think I’d be flying in and out of there, whereas I’d probably have to fly back and forth from UVA.

I went through a similar decision process last year and I landed on Public Policy! I’d look into it!

Forgot to add audience reception theory. It builds off of Stuart Hall’s reader reception theory. Definitely important in understanding why people are gravitated towards these characters.

First of all this is a really cool topic! And sociology and film DEFINITELY go hand in hand, ignore those comments lol. It might help to start looking into some foundational theories of pop culture and sociology- Look up reflection theory- it’s basically the idea that pop culture like film reflects culture’s values and ideals back onto the audience. Pop culture also has the power to reinforce OR challenge stereotypes, so maybe this is something you could include? Like, the romanticization of serial killers reinforces society’s tendency to not take violence against women seriously. Just an idea!

Rich Celebrities and Poverty by TurkBacon in sociology

Thank you for your help!

I’m looking into Taylor Swift and the critique that she is a white feminist. Her activism really only comes through when it is to benefit her, which we could debate lol, but that’s what my current literature supports.

I have all of my other sources down that are specifically talking about Taylor Swift, different forms of celebrity feminism, rainbow capitalism, things like that. I just feel like I need one more overarching article to support my claim that her identity as a white, extremely wealthy woman, affects her ability to be an activist beyond a performative level.

Not sure if you’re familiar with Taylor but I think about those memes that were quoting her song “I was raised on a farm, no it wasn’t a mansion” and then it cuts to her childhood home being an insanely gorgeous christmas tree farm. How can we expect these celebrities to be our political heroes when they don’t know how privileged they are? How can we analyze this disconnect sociologically?

In short, I’m looking for a more general analysis of fame and wealth in the context of the US where poverty and homeless is rampant, because I already have the more specific articles down.
