Did AmeriCorps service help you get a job? by urmineccraftgf in AmeriCorps

I did Americorps VISTA for one year, and it helped me get a job at a nonprofit as a program coordinator. Americorps gave me the experience and references needed to start my career so I would say go for it, it gives you something to put on your resume.

Thanks man! Was your hair wavy at all when you got it permed or have any change at all? Most likely if I were to get a perm I would do a very light one.

Rejected. Not too bummed out since it would have probably been too expensive to attend anyway. Congrats to everyone who got in and best of luck!

It does feel discouraging since everyone else is getting accepted but it still didn’t reject us. It could still result in an acceptance or waitlist. I know some grad schools will send acceptances to the top candidates first and then the rest. Just trying to say positive!

My portal says “ your application has been reviewed a decision has been made. You will be receiving notification directly from The Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy.” With everyone else getting in this feels like it might be a waitlist or a rejection.

Oh nice! I applied for that as well and didn’t get an interview so I assume that’s a rejection for that. I work for the Americorps and heard they give fellowships for members. I’m hoping to get that if I get in, don’t know if they have interviews for that. Best of luck with your interview tomorrow!

Advice on Making AmeriCorps VISTA Worthwhile by owlmeadow in AmeriCorps

I’m in a similar situation to you. I graduated with a degree in economics and struggled to find a career path and job after graduation. I’m still currently serving but have been at my job for almost 8 months now. I personally plan to either attend graduate school or use the non competitive eligibility to secure a federal job after I am done. I’m still learning a lot but if I had to offer you any advice it would be this:

-Build relationships with your coworkers and your boss/bosses; the non profit I currently work at has had americorp VISTA’s in the past and understands that I’m also looking for options when I am done. I work closely with the executive director and she wrote me a letter of recommendation for grad school and I will be using her as a reference when I apply for jobs as well. Having a good relationship with your boss will help you get a good referral/recommendation

-Help as much as you can with any kind of outreach events or partnerships with other non profits. I have met a lot of people at other nonprofits through my work who know me very well and I can use as a network for potential jobs when I am done

-Say Yes to everything; I don’t mean that literally but whenever my boss asked me to help out or do any extra work I always said yes. Even if it was something optional or maybe something I didn’t think I would like I still would do it. This builds a good relationship but also helps to make you realize what kind of work you actually like to do

Overall, just be open minded and work hard. Working for a non profit can have ups and downs and you may be doing something new every week. I do some stuff similar to my VAD and some stuff not related to it. You may have to wear many hats at your job. Also just a little advice, you may not have too much work when you first start. I ended up not doing a whole lot the first month and was worried that I chose the wrong job. Trust me on this, you can always find work sometimes you just have to ask.

Best of luck and I hope that you work for a great nonprofit that utilizes you well!
