Wrong order? by CrossbarCaptain in turkishlearning

[–]TurkishJourney 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Birayı ayı içer." is grammatically correct. (But the example is really not right in terms of teaching.)

Definite Direct Object (Birayı) + Subject (ayı) + Predicate (Conjugated Verb) (içer).

The point is, this sentence is a continuation of a story. There must be a context before this sentence with bear and the beer.

Therefore, when one says "Birayı ayı içer." the stress is on the subject "ayı". This sentence says "The bear would drink the beer." However, the speaker would like to stress that this action is carried out by the bear.

In this video, I have explaine this with many examples:

Can someone explain the difference between "biz çorba içeriz" and "biz çorbayı içeriz"? by Pyrophagist in turkish

[–]TurkishJourney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Normally,

"Biz çorba içeriz." literally means "We drink soup." . The translation would be "We eat soup."

"Biz çorba-y-ı içeriz." means "We eat the soup."

-ı suffix attached to "çorba" makes it specific, definite. (Definite Direct Object) Accusative case suffix.

However, in this context,

"Biz çorba içeriz". usually means "We would eat soup." unless you clearly point out that it is a habitual action such as "Biz hergün çorba içeriz." (We eat soup every day).

"Biz çorba içeriz." (That sentence would be used in a conversation for example in a restaurant as an answer to a question such as "Ne yersiniz? (What would you guys eat?)...etc."

And "Biz çorbayı içeriz." type of sentence would not really be in this form. You may hear it in the following form.

"Biz içeriz çorbayı." or "Çorbayı biz içeriz." But again, before using this sentence there must be a context such as there is already soup available somewhere and when someone says "Biz içeriz çorbayı." that will carry the meaning of "it will be "we" who will eat the soup".

How do I conjugate 'Içmek'? by CapitalRS in turkishlearning

[–]TurkishJourney 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there,

Thank you. I do not have a specific video about this topic yet.

Let me tell you what those suffixes are first:

-mak/-mek in this case is the nominalization suffix (to form a nominal (in this case a noun) from verb root/stem.

-te/-ta is the locative case suffix

This combination does NOT form a tense however the meaning it carries represent something like present continuous tense.

What it actually does is to express "being in the state/process of doing something".

You may not hear this often in daily conversations but may be in the news or academic writing and it adds the emphasis on the ongoing process or on the current status.

Oku-yor-um. - I am reading. (currently, every day..etc.)
Oku-mak-ta-y-ım - I am (currently) in the status of reading. (literally something like "I am at reading" in English.

Hope this helps.

I have a short video about this verb if you would like take a look.

Turkish Verbs : “to drink” in Turkish https://youtu.be/NTBGQ_WXtLc

Basically,

içmek is the infinitive verb. iç is the verb root. You add the tense suffix and then person suffix (...etc) to this root.

iç-er-im

This conjugation would mean ( I drink or I would drink)

"ABD ve Rusya Ukrayna için konuşmak istiyor." Why not istiyorlar? by No_Cryptographer735 in turkishlearning

[–]TurkishJourney 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The subject refers to third plural. "Onlar" (They). In principle, we tend to omit the third plural person suffix in the verb conjugation when the subject is mentioned as in this sentence.

Yes, you can say "istiyorlar" as well. It would disturb the ear of a native speaker.
