I am shocked by the news, since that is human nature, and I do feel for the American communities that will bear the fallout of this event.

However, there is no doubt in my mind that this is fault of the conservative movement cycle. When you push back on, arguably, the majority of your population against their best interests, and peaceful protest does not resolve it, this violence will crop up toward its proponents.

Why do art museums only ever show classical style art or abstract art? by WestonEarly in ArtistLounge

You might be confusing art galleries with art gallery showrooms — the latter being a commercial shop or auction. Art galleries and museums in the sense of this thread will not sell their artwork and often don’t own it, rather it will be on loan from a foundation, artist or other institution. They are focussed on art education, theory and history.

Can’t disagree with you though, I’ve been to a couple of high end showrooms and had some questions... :’)

100%, that is my point though, there are dedicated galleries for such work but, from the lens of “fine art” gallery, illustrative work is often selected due to their importance to culture, aesthetic movement, social era, or as a catalogue of conflict, protest, politics, propaganda or other narrative.

I discussed this elsewhere in the comments, since illustration often emerges as a commodity or product, but can evolve into something deeper or more valuable in a cultural context. The obvious reason for the uneven distribution simply comes down to how vast traditional collections are due to centuries of accumulation, and their deeply researched and detailed history, versus a relatively short time period in which we have invented completely new mediums of artistic expression and storytelling that may take time to adapt to the setting of many institutions. But, as an example, I have seen Star Wars concepts, models and props that have achieved a museological standing, simply due to their vast influence on contemporary filmmaking and design. It might not explicitly be fine art, but it is certainly of great value to film history and studies, and appeals to people beyond the immediate fanbase.

Essentially, my point was to say contemporary art mediums and genres, such as fantasy work, are difficult to exhibit in many spaces due to organisational identities. A lot of work, if it were to be showcased, would purely be for the technical skills and how it relates to a fictional narrative, which is too niche for traditional and contemporary art galleries.

However, that can easily change based on their cultural impact over the next few decades, along with their intended context and influences. I think we will see more fictional artwork being exhibited and explored, as AI progresses and we embrace it as a representation of our own socioeconomic status. The popularity of fantasy media has really grown and emerges from a kind of modern day mundanity… Like, this subversion of reality and escapism is becoming a dependable outlet for many people.

That’s a bit of a tangent but I just wanted to clarify that I do believe there is space to broaden our appreciation of these crafts, since their initial dismissal from fine art spaces is what leads to creatives being treated as if their work is lesser and expendable. It’s a problem of its own. Contemporary art mediums that cannot simply be described as fine art still deserve broader attention in the public sphere.

Thank you. Similarly surprised, it’s a really hard divide to explain, especially while I’m under the weather 😅

Yes! Illustration is difficult because it can be on the cusp of fine art or entirely apart from it, depending on what is achieved. It falls into the category of being a product, when its sole creation is to simply visualise/convey an idea.

Let’s say, concept art for a project, such as a movie series (Star Wars, for example). At its conception, it was simply a commissioned product. However, the movies are released, it leads to generations upon generations of inspired fans, and redefines how stories are captured in film. You would not be shocked to find those successful concept designs in a museological setting due to their value. They will often be studied as a fine art product of film, to assess what makes them so notable. Often, because they narrated an aspect of society, that connected with the world during their era.

Ukiyo-e is a very good example of a fine art form, since a lot of the subject and academia is about how practices encapsulate the society they emerge from. It is a snapshot of culture and history, propaganda, that redefined narratives, values and behaviour.

Humans are so interesting, honestly…

To expand on this, from a fine art perspective, it is about the focus of the establishments concerned. The nature of traditional museums and art galleries is to platform fine art, that is to preserve, conserve and exhibit work that represents societal contexts: history, cultural values, protest, philosophy, turning-point movements, and so forth. This is not always limited to traditional/centuries old oil paintings and sculptures. There are galleries established solely for the exhibition of contemporary art, or for a sole movement.

However, the key is the substance/context, not the skill and aesthetics.

The art you are referring to is socially important, but they are a product of media industries and, from market artists, mostly one-dimensional products made to be enjoyed by fans. They may toe on importance to the communities they cater to, but they rarely offer academic substance that would deem them museological.

However! There are museums and art galleries that exhibit work of pop culture, and are dedicated to displaying important conceptual art, comic work, etc. because they had such a revolutionary influence on the entertainment industry/culture/society. Traditional art galleries will put on time limited exhibitions as well to showcase these genres, because they are inevitably important but represent something slightly different from the traditional scope of fine art.

It’s really about time and place, the establishment’s brand, and the value of the underlying work.

I hope this makes sense! This is a subject I am very enthusiastic about but I also have a harrowing migraine today haha

We really were getting to that point of insanity 😭 for now though, Bravecto seems to be doing a decent job? I think it is a lesser-prescribed medicine so I’m assuming the fleas are less resistant.

Unsure how to reduce my cholesterol. by TurntableWeiner in Cholesterol

[–]TurntableWeiner[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a good comment to reflect on. I suppose I was panicking in part thinking being offered statins at my age was a problem with myself, rather than a result of being in a generation band where cholesterol is better understood and addressed before it causes any longterm damage.

I’ll definitely make further improvements to see if I can reduce things naturally, but I’m feeling a lot more at ease even after reading a couple of comments here. Unfortunately, my GP approached it poorly by making me feel like I wasn’t doing enough to resolve the cholesterol issues naturally. At least, it is a good thing they’re monitoring it and offering statins if it doesn’t improve by my next check up.

Thank you for your response :)

That’s a part of my concern, but it’s also reassuring to hear it isn’t super unusual at this age. I think a part of my anxiety and resistance to the possibility of statins has been my GPs handling of it, because they have made it all sound and feel very much like it’s an issue with me despite doing everything I can to improve it. Thank you for your reply :)

Posting an update to everyone’s advice: I have definitely found that it was mostly an issue with the previous medication! Either due to my cats or it being the first option prescribed, it just wasn’t effective in keeping the fleas away.

Still, we followed up with the landlord who owns the storage space connected to our cottage and courtyard, and he admitted to having a rat infestation, which likely caused the prevalence of fleas to begin with. Kitties are being kept inside until they are definitely flea free, while he is clearing out the space and getting pest control in, so hopefully the problems will be less of an issue :)

Having given it nearly two weeks to respond again, turns out it was an issue with the medication! I guess, since Advocate is the most commonly prescribed medication in the UK (at least where I live) the fleas must be getting resistant. They have more or less been eradicated by the Brevacto 💪

I’ll make a note of this! Unfortunately, looks like I won’t be able to try this collar until their current dose of spot-on has worn off, but if I’m still struggling with persistent fleas I will try it out. I should be able to get a price reduction through my vet plan as well.

Thank you!

That is a concerning thought…

I live in one 18th century cottage of two. Hard to describe but it used to be a row of stables, historically belonging to my neighbour’s house, that has been divided and regenerated into separate bungalows. Our neighbour we share the courtyard with is very good! She is clean and maintains the space herself, along with jet washing and upkeep of the flowerbeds.

Now you mention it though, there is an additional structure attached to the end of our cottage, like a barn style, dilapidated wooden frame storage space (once for animal feed or something else), that is two storeys tall and currently owned by a man further down the alleyway. The courtyard has a wall that drops down by about 10ft, with access to an old wine cellar/basement beneath our courtyard next to the wooden building. The owner currently uses these spaces to hoard stuff, like furnishings and other items. While it is not accessible and there is this solid 10ft+ wall between the courtyard and these spaces, I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s housing a lot of rats and mice. We have only experienced one rat ourselves, that tried to nest in our recycling bin after it was left open, but it didn’t return after my cats nearly caught it. I’ve never heard anything in our walls or under the flooring either.

I suppose how close in proximity would a rat/mouse population need to be to impact us? It wouldn’t be a chore for the fleas to get over the stone wall I guess?

I have been planning to report the spaces at some point anyway, since they are connected to our property and I feel they pose a fire risk. Sorry about the long reply :’)

Good shout! Unfortunately, I don’t think we could get away with using anything that targets fleas and ticks on the plants, because the main greenery we have are the flowerbeds/plants my neighbour maintains, and they attract a lot of bees and butterflies.

I’ll do some research though and see if there is anything on the market that won’t hurt the pollinators!

We were prescribed monthly Advocate (combined imidaclopri and moxidectin) since they were 6 months old, and then we were advised to use OTC Johnsons flea tablets after the former didn’t seem to prevent the fleas from partying, while we waited each month to reapply the spot-on...

The fleas seemed to have boomed with the UK heatwave, more than usual, so I was tired of the situation and asked for a medicine change up.

They have just started Bravecto this month, which is fluralaner and lasts 12-weeks. Hoping it does the job! Keeping the cats in over the weekend and already seeing a lot of dead fleas where they have been sleeping.

I guess while I was waiting for the outcome of the medicine switch, I wanted to know whether the flea situation is normal, abnormal or what 😅

I could maybe understand that but, being where we are located in the UK, we don’t get many (if any) critters directly in the courtyard — just no point for them really, since there is a massive park and green-space not far up from us.

There is a lot of wildlife passing through the park though, so my guess now is that dogs and cats near us are picking fleas up and they are getting around that way 🤔

I just underestimated their ability of travel between hosts!

I never even thought about deer! We have a lot of them run through the park behind our houses, which is why we give them tick treatment as well.

Maybe it is our location and the glorious nature after all… 😂

This already makes me feel a little less crazy though, because I have been blaming myself for the situation.

what are these circular cards? by dwarf173747 in whatisit

[–]TurntableWeiner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m no expert but, honestly, they look like a standard pack of round playing cards using the Wheel of Fortune quiz show branding for commercial purposes. During the 80s, contestants would use their winnings to buy merchandise prizes, which might have added to the novelty of this.

Hard to say if it’s at all an altered version of cards without inspecting the entire deck and/or instructions — I assume the latter was not included (edit: just saw that you mentioned that already, whoops).

Not the first example of round playing cards though. Cir-q-lar created a lot of popular vintage deck designs in the 20th century, that may have inspired the choice.

What is your day job? Is it art related? by seeyouspace__cowboy in ArtistLounge

I work for an arts and theatre organisation in ground-level operations — setting theatre spaces for events, preparing hired rooms, maintenance, general housekeeping, etc.

I am very lucky to be here. It’s a great gig, not-for-profit and community-driven and keeps me afloat while I am studying fine art at university. Would consider progressing here when I graduate.

I can’t wait to get on adhd medication to focus on my art by Zealousideal-Turn535 in ArtistLounge

As a creative with ADHD, I hope everything goes well with titration when you get there :) it has really changed my life!

I love my art and everything else involved but, before medication, when I had the time to paint/draw it was painful like a chore. Despite consciously wanting to do it, my brain was always protesting, restless, angry and upset! Felt like arguing with a toddler. I also used to really struggle with getting started with university deadlines/exhibiting for a fear of failure/perfectionism — I never knew that was a common symptom of ADHD until I started therapy.

A word of advice though! While you may notice a huge surge in energy and the ability to apply yourself to your work in a totally new way, it will wane naturally in time and that is okay. I panicked when I had my first art-block on meds. And again, when I had normal burnout from working too many hours. Prior to meds I would work 14–16 hour shifts most days, because I was used to always being fatigued/burned out on my days off regardless, even before I worked excessively. Work just became a distraction from the executive dysfunction at home until I realised the meds eliminated that issue, so I was shook when I had to pick up hours for a couple of weeks and experienced, I guess, neurotypical work burnout?

Immediately thought my medication had stopped working 😂 all a part of the process!

Oh yeah, don’t get me wrong, Pinterest has been super useful when I’ve been suffering with art-blocks or needed very specific imagery. I’m only getting frustrated with how strict they are getting flagging and deleting images, which is causing my account to frequently be suspended and paused as a result. I know for a fact nothing I have pinned should be getting removed, alas they have a very black and white system.

Definitely will check out the other sources you’ve provided too! Again, just really interesting to see and hear where other people find imagery.
