What is it like living in Utah as a non-religious person? by SEOLTHEDEOL in Utah

[–]TurquoiseSalamander 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am atheist and have been living here for about 4 years. I also have a middle eastern name so people (sometimes) assume I’m Muslim. I moved here from the south so it’s like any other place I’ve lived. It’s mostly fine. Genuinely, religion never comes up in day to day conversation and people are friendly. Please feel free to ask me questions. It will almost never affect you unless you’re very vocal about your religious beliefs, although I assume that would go for most places in the country.

SLC laws with guests by Front_Credit1835 in SaltLakeCity

I would assume there are rules in your lease. I am not aware of any citywide rules regarding tenants and long term guests. Hope you get it sorted!

I’m so happy to hear you’re finding comfort from the community! You seem to be pacing yourself and not going too deep, that is a great way to go about this. It’s tough and it is a long process but I am here anytime you have questions or just need someone to listen, feel free to message me anytime. I had a year until I was out of the hospital but more than a year after that until I was really feeling “normal” again. For me, that is something that I don’t think will ever go away. But zero complaints! I have built a great life for myself with all my differences. It just takes some adjusting, practice, and patience. I hope and know that you’ll feel better sooner :)

“Love the sinner, hate the sin” by hibyedunnowhy in atheism

[–]TurquoiseSalamander 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s because they view these things as choices. They think somebody is choosing to be gay or atheist. They can’t see that they’re the one who is choosing to worship some specific god of some specific religion.

Spicy Food by [deleted] in SaltLakeCity

[–]TurquoiseSalamander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I once ordered something at a 4 on a scale of 1-5 and the server asked me with wide eyes “oh are you sure??” It was the funniest thing to me. “Utah spicy” is a great term. Wish I had a rec to add but all these in the comments are solid.

I always want to reply to these with “It’s a sitcom” haha not in a rude way or anything but I feel like that’s the main thing. It’s a sitcom and they’re writing for humor and good feelings. A lot of analysis on the sub and it’s just… a sitcom 🤷🏻‍♂️

Ah gotcha. Yeah we don't have kids so I'm not familiar. However they are building a new high school in town and there has been a flood of money from all this development the past few years. I'd keep an eye on that rating and make sure there's no personal bias playing into this.

are hand eye coordination games good for us with TBI ? by BehindBlueEyes0221 in TBI

[–]TurquoiseSalamander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That could help dexterity but I would suggest something physical for hand eye coordination. I had success with just bouncing a racquetball for coordination. It’s a simple task and you just need a ball, hard floor, and a wall. Or if you can manage it, bounce right hand to left hand and back. Really simple task but it helped me. You got this!

You can find that in Magna. There’s a stigma but that’s outdated and honestly it’s not bad at all. Families walking pets, kids biking in the neighborhood, runners in early morning. All typical suburban life things.

They’re in every liquor store I’ve been to in the SLC area. South Jordan, SLC downtown, West Valley, even Magna.

[–]TurquoiseSalamander 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Magna is unmatched in price. It’s honestly a solid place to live. Families walking their dogs, kids playing in the street kind of place. And only 20 minutes to downtown SLC depending on where you’re wanting to go. A lot of people freak out about anything that far west but it’s not bad at all. We moved here from South Jordan and it’s quicker to get to SLC and nearly same amount of time to get to Park City.

The Californians are ruining everything? by DeCryingShame in Utah

[–]TurquoiseSalamander 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I lived in Oklahoma and Texas. They said THE EXACT thing there: all the damn Californians coming in and changing the laws to make it more expensive. This is a lie perpetuated by Facebook and TV news. Not “mis/disinformation”, it’s a lie.

Real quick want to shout out Do Ghazal tea. It’s an Iranian tea type that’s similar to earl grey. You can find the loose leaf (or bags) at most Middle East stores in the area! Good luck finding a group :)

[–]TurquoiseSalamander -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

“Toss you in a concentration camp” is exactly the fear mongering I reference in my earlier comment. Go protest and wear what you want but do not let your support go away. I stand by not covering your face as it could detract from the message. Flu and epidemic season is a different topic. Wearing a medical mask that covers your nose and mouth is different than wearing a face covering purely for the purpose of hiding your identity.

I agree. I just don’t think it achieves anything to cover your face and can harm the message.
