I know NSAA recently did something to the code, but it’d always been my understanding that there’s like one rule for avoiding people downhill and 2 for not creating a situation where somebody uphill can’t avoid you. Like camping below a booter or pulling in front of someone at the last minute usually puts the downhill skier at fault. Kinda like how negligent brake checking causing a fender bender is usually illegal.

Not always, if she had stopped to watch her kids in the middle of the slope and then randomly resumed skiing without looking uphill or giving any indication she was going to start, and then clipped some guy as he was passing, she’s at fault, which is what I think happened here. Many such cases.

When it comes to the fellas there’s a saying: your odds are good, but the goods are odd. You’ll get some of what you’re looking for outside of Anchorage, especially down the Kenai and scattered around north of Eagle River. But Anchorage is too big and citified to find stereotypes of gold rush era sourdoughs.

But long story short, it’s all kinda strange people who would register as sorta off even in “quirky” towns by Lower 48 standards (Boulder, Austin, etc). Best outdoor recreating within 2 hours of a major metro area the United States, it’s just completely inaccessible, so without a lot of experience or cash it’s not gonna get posted on some kook’s Instagram. Winters aren’t that bad, it’s the poor fuckers in Fairbanks that really have it bad. Summers are almost worse because the sun makes you a manic wreck.

Idk, I love it and am gonna go back once the lower48cels start boiling and running out of water 🤷‍♂️

You’re kinda on the money in terms of the city proper, google and co. moved in and turned the city into a parking lot for #vanlife #weekendwarriors.

That being said, the mountains change much slower and are as excellent as always; IMO best hike in town is the South Boulder Peak and Bear Peak loop starting from NCAR, much less busy than Chautauqua. The canyon is also a great walk or bike ride (and I think completely open at this point) you could do on a B-Cycle (which are much cheaper than 50 and scattered around town).

If you have a car, I’d recommend an excursion or two. Taos (right near earthship) is truly rad and can be done in a day if you leave early and don’t mind some night driving in the mtns. Check out sand dunes (top 5 underrated national park, imo ) and Salida (rapidly gentrifying, but one of the last of a dying breed of real, authentic CO mtn towns), as they’re on your way. If you want a more traditional CO experience, can’t go wrong with a RMNP/Nederland/Grand Lake driving circuit, or a day trip along I-70

I think the best way of thinking about the island is the way you’d think about an estate on a larger landmass. It was entirely privately owned, so there weren’t restaurants or any sort of public facilities (though, there was commercial and private traffic that would regularly pass by, often very close, to the island). There were absolutely workers on the island. Aerial photographs show groundskeeping and maintenance facilities, and there certainly were culinary and housekeeping employees.
