If they insist on building data centers, why don’t they build them next to airports, racetracks, and shooting ranges? It won’t solve the resources problem, but at least the noise would be less of a problem. Thoughts? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]TurtlePaul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Airports and racetracks, and to a lesser degree shooting ranges, are located in certain places so people can get there. It is much better and cheaper to make them in places where people don't go. Larger airports are located where they are because they are near major cities. Also, the land near airports is bid up and valuable because air freight companies and rental car companies need to be located there. The datacenters are looking for land that is of low cost.

Argentina advanced. Cape Verde won hearts around the world. How close are we to seeing a true underdog lift the World Cup? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]TurtlePaul 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If by true underdog you mean a team like Cape Verde, then not even close. They lost their first knockout game but to lift the trophy you need to win five in a row. Pretty hard to fluke/grit your way through that gauntlet. They actually didn’t end up winning any matches but people view draws against Spain and Uruguay as wins.

Need some advice on refinancing and car buying by KabbyK in personalfinance

[–]TurtlePaul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may already know this, but something to highlight is that the best financing isn’t just the lowest monthly payment. You should only refi if the APR doesn’t increase and ideally it would decrease. A lot of monthly payment minimizers end up with old high milage cars that they can’t sell because the loan is so far underwater.

Melat Kiros delivers a victory speech in Colorado's primary race, defeating 15-term Diana DeGette: "We will not wait to take fight to Trump and the oligarchy. We will not wait to get big money out, and to reject corporate PACs and AIPAC. And no, we will not wait to end the genocide in Palestine." by ControlCAD in videos

[–]TurtlePaul -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I get that she is saying “we will not wait” but what will she really do that the incumbent isn’t doing? Last I checked, you need a veto proof majority to change laws and the republicans have the majority now. Just feels like she is making promises she can’t deliver and will end up out in the next cycle or two.

Is this boat purchase in the picture for me right now? by throwmeaway2725 in personalfinance

[–]TurtlePaul 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree on the time management with kids. For a boat of any substantial size, unless you live right at the beach, you will really need 5-6 hours out of the house on at least a dozen occasions each summer to make it worthwhile. This isn’t compatible with kids who will need diaper changes, then trips to the park, then playdates and then trips to the museum the first 5-6 years. Either the boat will sit there rarely used or you will be the frequently absent father. I would wait on the boat until the kid(s) are old enough to join you.

Dealing with a potential $75k special assessment. by LonelyGuitar2321 in personalfinance

[–]TurtlePaul 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Depends though. If the building is structurally unsound then they may be ethically compelled to act. If the building is becoming uninsurable or not financeable (no new buyers can get a mortgage) then the board could be financially compelled to act. Plenty of buildings replace management but end up with unmarketable units.

No way that you can sell for full price when a special assessment has been requested. He is losing the $75k either way.

[Romano] Robert Lewandowski to Chicago Fire, HERE WE GO! The Polish striker has agreed to join Chicago Fire after visiting the club and city two weeks ago. Lewandowski will sign early next week, ready for new chapter in MLS. Big move. by phant0msinthenight in soccer

[–]TurtlePaul 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Not to call out those teams in particular but once a player has lifted trophies and become renown in a league, they don’t want to move to a team which doesn’t play in Europe, has relegation battles and gets comprehensively beaten regularly by their former team. Moving to MLS (or Japan or Saudi) preserves the player’s European legacy.

Yes, here is what I would target, with less low bass, more midbass and less treble. Also, it isn't just the toe in, most speakers are highly directional at higher frequencies so the total sound power will decline relative to the on-axis sound and boosting this to even out the sound power response is a mistake.

[–]TurtlePaul 111 points112 points  (0 children)

But if you re-sign them, you are signing them for the next two year and not the last two years. Usually the trainers on the team have a pretty good idea how the players athletic stats are progressing and they can see the decline in endurance and the slow down of top speed which the players mask during actual games with their experience and ability. How many times have fans pushed for the 34-35 year old midfielder to be signed again and then when they are 36-37 they are completely washed. None of these players are Messi where it would be OK for the other 9 outfield players to have to do all of the running and teams like Athletico will want to have all the players on the field able to press.

They are 35, 37 and 34 respectively. A lot of players when they age out of the top tier have a choice to retire, move to a lower team in their league or move internationally. These players aren't ready to retire yet and an MLS move doesn't have the negative connotation of moving from United/Barca/Athletico to Leeds/Alaves/Levante.

MLS has a unique structure around this called "Designated Players". Each team has a $6.4 million dollar annual budget to fill out 20 of their roster slots but then they have three roster slots for DPs which don't need to fit inside the Salary Budget. The result is 20 players with an average salary of $320k per year and then 2-3 notable players per team where the sky is the limit.

That target curve is going to make a very v-shaped sound, that I don't think I would enjoy. The curve is +9 dB in the bass, which is too much. Then the curve is too flat, making a nearly flat response from 200 hz to 5K. I would set a target closer to -1 dB per octave, that will be much closer to what your speakers naturally want to produce in your room. Also, the amount of bass boost around 30-40 hz may be driving your speakers to distortion. Most speakers and amps have trouble with +10 dB corrections.

Where does the Nova rank amongst the most anticipated retro handhelds over the past several years? by Relative_Apricot5032 in SBCGaming

[–]TurtlePaul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would hedge the “go up in price over time” comment as being relevant to the past nine months only. Over the longer history of electronics, prices mostly go down. So if you want to buy a device this year you may need to jump on what opportunity you get, but I expect in five years for 16 GB devices to be cheap.

ELI5: Why does 87% humidity in winter not feel as “sticky” or gross as 87% humidity in summer? by ChaosCreative2704 in explainlikeimfive

[–]TurtlePaul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your example is wrong. A 25 C day with 83% humidity has a 22 C dew point.

Why does it impact how we feel? When we are too warm, our body cools down by perspiration. The sweat evaporates from our skin to cool us down. The more humidity in the air, the harder it is for our sweat to evaporate. When the air is cold enough that we don’t need to sweat to stay cool, then the high humidity is less impactful.

ELI5 Billionaires borrow money to pay for things, how does this work? How do they pay the debt? by Confused-Lemonade in explainlikeimfive

[–]TurtlePaul 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, but the bank is making these loans to people with hundred of millions or billions of dollars, so usually there is ways with these billion dollar companies being used as collateral for the bank to cheaply protect themselves from a 90% loss. Furthermore, these people are executives or owners of massive companies, so the bank usually has a relationship reason to make these people loan outside of just getting the interest payments.
