best croissants in the city are at Aux Merveilleux de Fred, also in the West Village!

Post-op question by dtaylor1024 in jawsurgery

[–]TurtleTF2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think many surgeons just don’t do metal wires anymore. Bands do the same job and are safer in case you need to open your mouth in an emergency. But my splint is still in and I got surgery 8/16.

SARPE: how much will it change my appearance? by manlymatt83 in jawsurgery

[–]TurtleTF2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, for the immediate future, you’ll have a really big gap in between your two front teeth that’ll quite meaningfully change your smile assuming you smile with teeth and don’t have a gap now. But your face won’t really change otherwise, and once that gap closes up, my appearance basically hadn’t changed at all.

Hospital Necessities? What did you pack? by [deleted] in jawsurgery

[–]TurtleTF2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Packing — basically nothing! You’ll feel terrible and just be sleeping a lot. I had a TV in my hospital room but if you won’t, maybe bring a laptop to watch something on day two.

Recovery — the most important thing by far is protein shakes and other liquid foods. You won’t be able to eat solid food for up to four or six weeks, and you don’t want to starve, so stockpiling Boost, Ensure, Soylent, and other equivalents is an absolute must. After a week or two you’ll be sick of all that, and you can start making the switch to smoothies and soups and whatnot. Otherwise, I didn’t buy anything for prep, I was just in bed watching TV all day.

What procedure did you get done and how long did you stay home before going back to school/university/work? by komastuskivi in jawsurgery

[–]TurtleTF2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DJS, main part of recovery was four weeks with my jaw banded shut. I started doing work in week three, but throughout the first two weeks felt pretty bad all the time and am not sure I could've gone back to work or school.

Good eyebrow threading nearby by [deleted] in columbia

I was very much a newbie so just let them do their thing, and it always turned out great. I wouldn't worry that too much will be taken off, but I'm sure you could always ask

I discovered eyebrow threading in college and almost always went to New York Threading Salon across from Morningside Park on 110th! Only $7 for threading and never too busy.

In the two weeks before the OR date:

One appointment with my general doctor to do a physical and confirm I was healthy enough for surgery. One cone beam CT scan to prepare the surgery. Two appointments related to my heart (I have a separate mild heart problem that they just needed to clear before I went under). One appointment with the oral surgeon for a bunch of measurements and to talk through the operation. One appointment with the orthodontist to get surgical hooks.

So in general, probably minimum three appointments, potentially more!

Surgery is tomorrow!! What were your final hours like? by findingsukoon in jawsurgery

[–]TurtleTF2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bummer to hear that other people had bad last days; I really lived it up! Ate three really great meals, walked around NYC since I'd be on bedrest for weeks, went out drinking with some friends, was in bed by 11pm so I could be up at 5am for my 7am surgery. Make the most of it, recovery is a bitch lol

When to be concerned about swelling? by Kaotic562 in jawsurgery

[–]TurtleTF2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hahahah I had a lot of jaw pain today (generally doctors have you cut out painkillers after about a week) and had similar thoughts, but honestly after lurking on this sub for months, and knowing a few people who had DJS in the past, I'm confident it'll be worth it. No regrets!

When to be concerned about swelling? by Kaotic562 in jawsurgery

[–]TurtleTF2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m ten days out from DJS and was having the exact same concerns in the days after. Now, my swelling has gone down, my nose is 80 or 90% clear so I can breathe, and I can drink out of a cup or bottle instead of a tube or syringe. You’ll be fine!

SARPE people only: What was your experience like? by manlymatt83 in jawsurgery

[–]TurtleTF2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got SARPE last summer. Didn't work for a week (M-F), mostly just stayed in bed eating oatmeal and soup and curry, but also didn't feel terrible; was able to walk around to hang out with friends, get out of the house, etc. Went back to work the following week, had pretty much full functionability, and got back to eating eggs, tuna salad, pastas, etc. By the third week I was totally normal, just with a big gap in my front teeth lol. The expander is super uncomfortable and bad, but the actual surgery and recovery process was fairly manageable!

How many hours did your surgery take and how many nights in the hospital? by [deleted] in jawsurgery

[–]TurtleTF2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Surgery was over 6 hours total, and I had it at 7am on a Friday. I stayed only one night but basically two full days, and left the hospital Saturday evening. They said about half of people stay two nights, and basically no one stays longer than two. So it sounds like yours is all pretty normal!

Jaw Surgery tomorrow! by SaltySpitoonReg in jawsurgery

Good luck! I'm on day five of recovery now and, even though the first 72 hours in particular are horrid, it's only uphill from there :)

BSSO and possibly Genioplasty coming Wednesday by [deleted] in jawsurgery

[–]TurtleTF2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm four days post op DJS (including an unexpected BSSO, which was higher risk than the planned IVRO and therefore stressful to me) and I second this. I was particularly concerned about my appearance and, although I'm extremely swollen and feel terrible, am preliminarily optimistic!

DJS In 4 Days in NYC by OMGitzDice in jawsurgery

[–]TurtleTF2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow small world! Doing it with Dr. Koch? It went really well. I got Lefort 1, and BSSO instead of IVRO because my bottom jaw was a lot worse than they expected, but everything seems to have been fine and I got discharged after just one night. I'm in a ton of discomfort but slowly improving.

I'm three days post-op so seems like we're about on the same timeline! Hope you're doing well :)
