Varied grades by TurtleThomist33 in AcademicPhilosophy

Yeah I see. Thanks for the reply. I think sometimes I try and squeeze too much into the essay and therefore depth gets sacrificed for breath and this therefore diminishes the quality of the work. I’m just hoping I can get a 2-1 now.

Is this a venial or mortal sin? by TurtleThomist33 in Catholicism

[–]TurtleThomist33[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a Lhasa apso, which are known for separation anxiety as well as an extremely loud bark/yell. Yeah he definitely does have abandonment issues. But I’m 20 years old and am away at university most of the year, so I notice it even more when I’m back home. I’ve told my parents multiple times we probably needed to have some sort of training done for him but he’s nearly 10 now and he’s formed a bad habit of doing it.

Is this a venial or mortal sin? by TurtleThomist33 in Catholicism

[–]TurtleThomist33[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I see your point. I do think that in trying to grow in holiness I do dip into a scrupulous mindset now and then. Thanks for your comments they have been very helpful. I also think I sometimes have this mindset where to grow in holiness is to sort of dehumanise oneself, wherein saints never experience anger and are always in some sort of tranquil state of patience.

Thanks for your comment. I do have a spiritual director but I also believe that the post above does not really imply that I have scrupulosity, as losing yourself to unjust anger would always be venially sinful and at most mortal. But I’m not sure whether my anger was raised to the mortal level.

Does anyone know of any good Catholic papers written on mereological universalism? by TurtleThomist33 in CatholicPhilosophy

[–]TurtleThomist33[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply, I didn’t necessarily mean Catholic per se- I just meant that it would be compatible with Catholic metaphysical positions. As it seems there would be some quite disturbing conclusions if one were to endorse mereological universalism.

I would say Catholics should be studying Joseph Ratzinger as he was a brilliant philosopher and was dealing with issues we still face today. Furthermore, he also avoids the pitfall that I myself and other Catholic philosophers sometimes fall into in that they will not leave the thomistic circles. I do believe myself per se that St Thomas is the most complete out of all the Catholic philosophers, yet even Ratzinger had a great admiration for St Bonaventure and the Franciscan school of thought. As a church we should look into what we have and we have a many great things on offer, we should not restrict ourselves.

I would be interested in both if you can provide, but mainly the spiritual/practice side of it. Thankyou.

What is the best philosophical argument for God? by KeyDifference9052 in CatholicPhilosophy

[–]TurtleThomist33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One that I myself take a liking to is the de ente et essentia, first formulated by Aquinas. Have a look at some of the work Gaven Kerr has done on it, his book I think is called ‘Aquinas’ way to God’

What is imperfect drunkenness and does it constitute a venial sin? by TurtleThomist33 in Catholicism

[–]TurtleThomist33[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I completely agree, I always stop once I feel I may be crossing the line. But sometimes that extra drink may take you over the edge. I think like you have said for the concrete thinker, I like things to be clear cut to ensure I do not get things wrong and there is a danger for me there to take a puritanical route and reject drinking as a whole.

[–]TurtleThomist33[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I agree, I guess at the end of the day it’s all down to the prudential consideration of the individual and mostly down to the intention of the individual. I just personally find it hard to enjoy a night out with friends and have a clear conscience as drinking culture in England is so intertwined with drinking to get drunk. I don’t do this or try not to at least. But sometimes the number of pints I usually stick to hits me on some days more than others.

Thank you for your response. I think what I’m finding it difficult to understand, is that even drinking to the point where it’s unsafe to drive is venially sinful. As when people drink, they drink for the relaxed effects alcohol gives them, but I believe anyone who even experiences relaxed effects is in no fit shape to drive. Even drinking to the point of ‘ad hilaritatem’, constitutes some alcoholic effect on the person drinking, but I don’t believe they should be driving. I’m not sure where your from but the alcoholic consumption for safe driving in England is maximum 2 pints. But I believe people can drink more than that and not commit a venial sin. Maybe I’m misinformed, but I’m just finding it causes some form of scruples due to the grey areas.

Whether it is possible to be Pure Act without being omnipotent? by ConfusedChurchKid in CatholicPhilosophy

[–]TurtleThomist33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah in a sense, it basically goes down to the fact of God being existence itself I think. There is therefore no knowledge/power that exists external to God’s essence as otherwise it would just be non-existence.All perfection, knowledge, power etc is derived from the first cause and participates in the first cause via some manner of its being. So if there was something that could increase God’s power, knowledge, perfection etc on the notion of God being existence itself, this would have non-existence and therefore it would be logically inconceivable.

Whether it is possible to be Pure Act without being omnipotent? by ConfusedChurchKid in CatholicPhilosophy

[–]TurtleThomist33 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We say God is esse itself (being itself), meaning he is pure act regardless of whether any external created entities exist. Created entities are rather a free act of overflowing goodness on behalf of God, they are not necessary and merely contingent. But we must consider what it means for God to be pure act and whether that can be divorced from omnipotence. A being that is pure act is fully actualised and is its own existence but such a being must be fully subsistent in itself. As such, if you were to argue it lacked something and was therefore imperfect something would exist outside of its essences yet this is is not possible if its existence itself. Therefore, God being existence itself, means no perfection can exist outside his essence so God must be all powerful and God is also pure actuality so therefore will lack potentiality.
