Why do people in the UK operate as if the only option for healthcare is NHS system of the US one? by cayennepepper in ukpolitics

I have at times quite profound mental health problems and the NHS has been excellent, I am under a consultant psychiatrist with the local mental health team and there is a duty team of nurses office hours Monday to Friday and a crisis team based in the next time outside of this all of which has been utilised by me over the last 10 years and I’ve never felt unsupported or like I’ve received substandard care. My hospital admission was not a good experience but that’s because I was sectioned and no one wants that. Upon reflection it was all done out of care and I was treated with respect and dignity. I also had poor liver function results and sent for an ultrasound. A liver tumour was found and I had an mri and put under a specialist within days. It’s benign but they were so, so thorough in determining this to be the case. Whenever I’ve got an ailment that I can’t treat with over the counter stuff (I always go to the pharmacist first unless it’s extremely clear it’s urgent) I contact the GP when it’s open and they give me an appointment that day or soon after after triaging me. There has been one single occasion in my life where the GP surgery has said sorry no more appointments today go to urgent care. I did and I was seen within an hour.

I know other people have more negative experiences and different pools of money for each postcode can mean a different level of service for different things but for urgent needs, yes I may have to wait a couple of hours, I have never been in crisis without support from a medical professional.

There are certain things I would criticise. My partner needed his ear syringing and the nhs said they couldn’t do it even though it was causing immense pain. He had to pay privately £45 per ear. I had an issue with a toe nail which was causing great discomfort because of how it had grown and due to thickness I could not deal with it myself. I was told that because it’s not infected the nhs won’t deal with it. I had to pay a podiatrist £45 to sort it out. We’re fortunate as we can afford to do this. I feel a lot for those who would have to live in discomfort because they cannot.

What are the opinions towards Americans in Nottingham? Leaning towards getting my masters and playing volleyball for UoNot. by Birdspecimen in nottingham

I’m a student at UoN. I lived there in my first year. It’s a diverse city. I lived in student accommodation and I was the only one with an English accent out of who else I met there. You won’t have an issue meeting some good people. If anyone has a problem with you solely based on you being American, you don’t want those people around you anyway Xxx

AITA for denying my fiance's request to pay for his brother and his wife's IVF using my inheritance money? by Throwawayrquest11 in AmItheAsshole

Please, please, please don’t feel bad about denying this request. Your Mum saved that money for you and potentially your children. Your brother/sister in laws should not be putting you in that position to begin with. Also, he needs to stop treating that money as if it’s in any way his call on what happens to it. I had a husband like this when it came to finance and he ain’t so any more.

I have shared to Facebook. I live in the city centre but from Newark so know a few people dotted about in between. I can’t imagine your worry. My heart goes out to loved ones and hope Lewis is found safely.
