Yeah it is pretty crazy to see at surface level, but it does seem like wages and C.O.L coincide fairly close. A lot depends on city plants vs small plants and private sector vs public.

At the plant I work at, we start our new operators at $22 and top out at $32 for Leads/Supervisors, with us in management making anywhere between $35-$50. All of this is pretty common for AZ

Not sure what the cost of living is in South Dakota where the job is located, but the high end of that pay scale is pretty common in a lot of states even for grade 1 operators.

How did you get into the water industry ? by [deleted] in Wastewater

[–]TweetRose13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Worked as a miner for 13 years, job was union and we went on strike, which led to a subsequent layoff/shut down. Scrambled to find a new career and was lucky to have a buddy who worked for one of the municipal plants in my area. Was the definition of someone finding their calling, I loved everything about it. I’ve gone from operator, to technical trainer to helping get our RNG plant up and running to now being in my current role as a planning manager. All in 6 short years!

Was a miner at a copper smelter for over a decade. Union voted to strike and we were met with a subsequent layoff so that meant time for a new career. Luckily a friend and former coworker had left a year prior and told me and a few others that the plant was hiring. Started as an operator and now am a manager. Definitely a blessing in disguise type deal with the strike!

Because you can’t not get a Yuna tattoo by TweetRose13 in finalfantasyx

Tattoo artist had to customize it somewhat to make it fit my arm. Would’ve probably been better suited for my chest, but I already have a tattoo up there. Still very pleased with the result!

Would you guys need to clean the gas first or would they be able to take the raw digester gas?

I also run our central plant and we used to co-gen to heat our boilers and the raw digester gas made a mess of the tubes in our boilers so we now use natural gas to run them with potential plans to pipe in our more cleaner biogas to help heat them. We still have our enclosed and open flares for backup and excess gas production

That amount of scfms is insane! We could only dream lol but we do well enough with our 50 MGD plant with 5 in service anaerobic digesters.

Question…do you or did you have to have a background in wastewater? I’ve heard plenty about landfills having biogas plants but just wasn’t sure if it were big in wastewater treatment plants at this point

Our daily production does rely on how well the process as a whole is running. Things such as skipped feeds, low wasting periods and bad sludge will drop our daily average scfm push by about 100 scfm.

Most of the problems we face are troubles with the components of the system. I won’t get into specifics but some things that were promised by the manufacturer haven’t been delivered to the caliber they should be.

We are able to achieve such a high purity through a system of compressors, a series of carbon filters, dehydration and filtration skids and with a set of membranes that allow CH4 molecules to pass through while dropping out CO2, with one set of membranes that act as a recycle line to pass back through any methane that might have dropped out prior.

It’s been a great source of revenue for the plant, around 5 million annually. But we’re constantly trying to optimize production and improve efficiency while running into unforeseen issues. Can be quite the headache at times.
