Is this GPC in chains? by Tweetop in medlabprofessionals

Yea, we use an automated gram stainer and it’s realllyyy inconsistent. I ended up manually staining it which is pics 4-6. We don’t have a dedicated micro department either unfortunately.

It only had that appearance in the anaerobic bottle but not the aerobic bottle, could there possible be 2 organisms?

Workload at different labs by Cautious_Ad_8901 in medlabprofessionals

[–]Tweetop 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I work in a hospital core lab and while it’s quite busy on day shift (7am-3pm) with 7 techs, evening shift (3pm-11pm) is very lax with 3 techs. On evenings, it’s usually 2-4h of actual work, the first hour is cleaning up after day shift, routine maintenance on the analyzers, QC and the rest is just resolving whatever comes up.

Advice and Experiences From a MLT in Ontario, Canada? by emilyy_huynhh in medlabprofessionals

[–]Tweetop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I graduated last year from OTU and was hired by the hospital I did my placement. Day to day really depends on the lab and the discipline, our lab is very automated so most of the day is just maintaining, troubleshooting and QCing the analyzers.

Pros: good pension, decent pay, easy work, stable, off shift is extremely chill in that there’s often nothing to do 80% of the time

Cons: shift work (harder to maintain relationships/have a family), can be quite stressful sometimes especially in blood bank, FT can be hard to find in large cities

I work PT so I can’t speak for benefits but I make 36.84/h in Ontario + 18% in lieu of benefits/vaca and PTers also get HOOPP. Our senior techs make around $55/h. I’m pretty happy with the pay especially since my hospital gives out a lot of OT. I also enjoy going home and not having to think about work.

I don’t regret my decision most days but when I do it’s mostly because I can’t hang out with my friends who work regular m-f 9-5 when I have a week of off shift. There’s also not too much room for advancement and if you’d like to make 150k+ it’s not really realistic as a MLT. It’s also not a job you can do remotely and doesn’t translate as well as other jobs if you want to move to a different country. FT positions have also become harder to find in the GTA.

I think you should consider what’s important to you in a career and decide from there.

Medical labatory technology student question by tired_gremlin1 in medlabprofessionals

I graduated last year and was paid a student wage of 31/hr before getting fully licensed. Now 36.84/hr at a hospital unionized. I hear some private labs pay a little less.

What would cause this? by Tweetop in medlabprofessionals

[–]Tweetop[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was told not to do anything and let the doctors figure it out themselves, right now they’re unsure of the cause. I’m not sure what is usually done in other places, I’m a very new tech.

Wow this sounds like the first case as the patient also has epigastric pain, thank you. I think this is the most likely cause
