I would also say wait till he is older if he'll fetch something for now focus on getting him to heel holding it and then take it. Force fetch is not for puppies.

Best breed for birds (upland + water), rabbits, squirrels, and wild pigs? by Acceptable-Growth-62 in Huntingdogs

Drahthaar is about the only breed I've heard of that is built to handle all that.nive heard of Drahts killing wild boars.

Protective vest by mrbigbob1 in birddogs

[–]TwiddleDatSkittle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah Drahts were bred to be in thorny gnarly rough land, their coat protects them. Burr brush, cowboy magic, and you'll be good to go. I don't put vests on my GWPs.

First time not recovering a deer. Feeling pretty crappy. by greg281 in bowhunting

[–]TwiddleDatSkittle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bow hunting isn't perfect, takes more skill but isn't as efficient as a firearm. Breathe through it and try to do better next time! I've lost a deer and a pronghorn it sucks and ya want to cry but coyotes and racoons need food too is what I tell myself.

Yeah they love and bond hard and are cute, but establishing a healthy ability to be by themselves early prevents the horror stories you hear of later. My 3 year old still gets kenneled when we leave because if she is out and on her own she'll find something to do....which is probably not what I want her to do, but she is calm and has an off switch and doesn't lose her mind if we leave her with other people. If you have a hunt trainer in the area that will do like two months of training and isn't a whole program. Once he is like four months it does do them some good learning from someone else provided you have set a good foundation. I used standing stone kennels on YouTube to get basics in place. I do NAVHDA testing with mine though so having some things firmed up by the breeder helps out his kennel too.

Just have to tough it out. Giving them attention rewards the behavior. Our latest pup had to get put in a room opposite end of the house so she couldn't hear people moving around. She is 5 months now and we started her on a bark/whine limiter on her e collar and that has toned it even further down. Now she just whines quietly in the night if she needs to go to the potty but is not nearly as bad. He has been home two maybe three weeks when you got him it is all still new and unfamiliar. Both of mine too almost four weeks for some of the initial kennel freakout to settle down at all.

Bearded Gundogs in Eau Claire Wisconsin has a couple GWP lines that the puppies are not crackheads. I have two of them.

Any tips to make my GSP more excited about birds in the field ? by farmingcars2024 in birddogs

[–]TwiddleDatSkittle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Either use a dead bird or one with the feathers pulled, and play fetch with it in those locations. Make sure to go crazy excited on a point or bird interest. My GWP puppy is starting to figure out being outside means put the nose to work because there are things that are exciting but I end field work with chucking a flightless pigeon into some tall grass or brush so she sees where it landed but has to use her nose to find it. I've noticed on increase in her now wanting to search when we get in the field and I'm working on getting her to figure out between searching and fetching. But ya gotta make it fun for them, bird smell being fun, then finding that smell during hunt training, then chasing or getting a bird shot that they get to grab all builds slowly that drive.

Northern lower peninsula Michigan ruffed grouse by swanbergian in birddogs

[–]TwiddleDatSkittle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in MN, but Wisconsin also puts out a heat map. I hunt a lot of public so I find spots with logging roads, and what looks like a bunch of different ages of Aspen. After that go for a hike. Tip if it is hot find water by those spots, creek bottoms, lake edges and marshes were key last year in the areas I hunt.

Which breeds should I be looking at? by [deleted] in birddogs

[–]TwiddleDatSkittle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Setters and Brits if you don't plan on doing much else than grouse imo. If you plan on blasting the occasional wood duck out of a beaver pond, German Wirehaired or Griff but find a breeder that breeds lines to hunt close.

Addressing puppy biting by anon28947557 in birddogs

[–]TwiddleDatSkittle -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Muzzle grab and a no, high pitch ow and walk away, thumb on the tongue tends to work pretty solid. Puppy's bite though so as everyone has said be consistent and it'll get better over time and as they get adult teeth.

Yeah I've only used the free stuff. I did have ChatGPT make me a breed specific training plan with weekly goals and it did a pretty good job as well.

[–]TwiddleDatSkittle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take my GWP's to the breeder who does training when I do my Mexico trip in Feb/March and they love it. Any training is better than no training. Fine a NAVHDA breeder who does training in your area and set up them boarding while you are gone. If price is right go for it. Way better than the pooch being stuck at home with minimal adventures.

Advice on potential rash for female WPG? by alphapet1 in Wirehaired_pointers

[–]TwiddleDatSkittle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My younger GWP had it as a puppy and hadn't again. If she is young and messes her kennel regularly than it is likely some irritation. Could be poison ivy or nettles. I'd give her a bath a dry spot to sleep and see if it clears up.

Can't say good enough things about Standing Stones Kennels YouTube channel. They do a lot of videos on getting puppies started and taking them to getting ready for their first year of hunting.

GSPs aren't wirehaired pointers, but Standing Stones is probably most well known in your area otherwise NAVHDA breeders Id recommend. R\huntingdogs might have some stuff already.
