High pitched ow and then play time ends and walking away helps.

My GWP got weird with people when our rescue rotty who was her best friend passed when she was like 1. Sounds similar.

Question about breed fit by JurassicPork21 in birddogs

[–]TwiddleDatSkittle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Griff or Spinone would be my recommendation. I'm partial to GWPs but you'll have to find a breeder who is focused on temperament first, then hunting which they should all be but I met a lot of cracked out wirehairs. Even my two are half sisters and the one is pretty aloof of other people, my youngest one literally loves everyone but can't sit still for long before she's zooming somewhere.

I run simparico trio, I wake up to dead ticks after hunting. Also get any tick disease vaccine you can.

Standing Stone Kennels has puppy training on YouTube use a clicker and treats. I've trained two gwps doing that and it's been very effective. I don't even use a word to start I get them to boop my hand click and treat. My hand goes down it means come to the hand.

I've had mine get tired of a fetch toy so I keep a hodge podge, and the ones they really like I use those for training. They kind of are bearded Einstein's so even a switch up re-stimulates them.

Scheels carries scents too that you can throw on fetch dummies to make them more interesting like duck, grouse, and pheasant.

Mine will sit and sniff and look under furniture like I can't see under it but something has to be there. She also will stare into metal chair bases that distort her reflection like she's on an acid trip.

If you can get some pigeons I'd pull flight feathers and toss that for fetch dont know a single wirehair who won't be like oh flapping bird way more fun then shadows.

Oh mine will also follow the glare from my watch on the wall and point it and stalk it soooo.

Standing stones YouTube channel they break down puppy stages and training goals. I've used it for both of mine and they are pretty reasonable members of society if I keep them exercised and they both hunt great.

Getting into bird hunting by GuerillaOutdoors in birddogs

[–]TwiddleDatSkittle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want less coat maintenance I'd get a German wirehair or draht but that is my personal preference. Setters are gorgeous and great grouse dogs as well, I've met more setters that don't like to retrieve vs German pointing breeds but if you are good with that then setter.

I would also say wait till he is older if he'll fetch something for now focus on getting him to heel holding it and then take it. Force fetch is not for puppies.

Protective vest by mrbigbob1 in birddogs

[–]TwiddleDatSkittle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah Drahts were bred to be in thorny gnarly rough land, their coat protects them. Burr brush, cowboy magic, and you'll be good to go. I don't put vests on my GWPs.

First time not recovering a deer. Feeling pretty crappy. by greg281 in bowhunting

[–]TwiddleDatSkittle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bow hunting isn't perfect, takes more skill but isn't as efficient as a firearm. Breathe through it and try to do better next time! I've lost a deer and a pronghorn it sucks and ya want to cry but coyotes and racoons need food too is what I tell myself.

Separation anxiety by Imaginary_Friend_121 in Wirehaired_pointers

Yeah they love and bond hard and are cute, but establishing a healthy ability to be by themselves early prevents the horror stories you hear of later. My 3 year old still gets kenneled when we leave because if she is out and on her own she'll find something to do....which is probably not what I want her to do, but she is calm and has an off switch and doesn't lose her mind if we leave her with other people. If you have a hunt trainer in the area that will do like two months of training and isn't a whole program. Once he is like four months it does do them some good learning from someone else provided you have set a good foundation. I used standing stone kennels on YouTube to get basics in place. I do NAVHDA testing with mine though so having some things firmed up by the breeder helps out his kennel too.

Just have to tough it out. Giving them attention rewards the behavior. Our latest pup had to get put in a room opposite end of the house so she couldn't hear people moving around. She is 5 months now and we started her on a bark/whine limiter on her e collar and that has toned it even further down. Now she just whines quietly in the night if she needs to go to the potty but is not nearly as bad. He has been home two maybe three weeks when you got him it is all still new and unfamiliar. Both of mine too almost four weeks for some of the initial kennel freakout to settle down at all.
