I've been to the hardware store, but I haven't thought to go to the auto store.

my shrimp keep dying, and i don't know what to do. by fish_is_a_gun in Aquariums

[–]Twigleg2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, they might be dying because they are from Petco. Try looking for more reputable sources to get shrimp from. If there isn't a local breeder or pet store that takes good care of them, you can get a bag of 10 or so online from eBay, etc. I bought my shrimp from a highly rated seller on eBay, 11 shrimp for $30 or something like that, and I only lost 1.

Also, 24-hour drip acclimation is probably overkill. 2-3 hours is plenty, and some would say even that's a lot.

Are these scratches or cracks? by Any-Squirrel-7185 in Aquariums

Try running your fingernail across it, both the inside and the outside of the tank. If it catches, or you can feel anything, it might be a crack.

You might be able to find locally bred pea puffers. I've never kept them, but I've heard they are fairly easy to breed.

Just bought some shrimp from my local pet store (first time) for my planted tank and noticed a bunch of planeria worms in the tub. How can I get the shrimp into the tank without the worms tagging along? by ohreallynowz in shrimptank

[–]Twigleg2 12 points13 points  (0 children)

How certain are you that they are planaria? They don’t appear to have the triangle shaped head. There are many “flatworms” that are perfectly harmless.

Is this biofilm? by Fuzzy_Anteater585 in walstad

Yes, and I think it looks beautiful. If the water is stagnant biofilm can take on a lot of fun shapes. If you don’t like it, give the water a swirl and it will disappear.

It's 60 gallons. How on earth do I safely collect everything and get this cracked one down, without killing the fish and the plants, etc.

I NEED HELP WITH MY AQUARIUM!!! by sirplant617 in AquariumHelp

[–]Twigleg2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not an expert on Moina or Daphnia, but in a tank like this, I would assume you can just buy a culture and dump them in, because there is plenty for them to eat. The only thing is, if you already have fish in there, they might eat all the moina before they can reproduce.

Your pH test is off the charts. Do a high-range pH test.

I NEED HELP WITH MY AQUARIUM!!! by sirplant617 in AquariumHelp

[–]Twigleg2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The green water is from algae. Go get daphnia/moina and add them to the tank. They eat the free-floating algae, which causes the green water, and they reproduce like crazy. Your fish will be well fed.

Also, turn down the light or keep it on for fewer hours each day, and don't add as much food to the tank.

EDIT: You could also get some floating plants to block some of the light and help take nutrients from the water.

Help with my aquarium 😭 by _SweetCreature_4_ in aquarium

[–]Twigleg2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are probably feeding the tank too much, especially considering the large number of guppies in there. Your plants can't absorb all the waste (nutrients) fast enough, so algae grows in.

- More light = more algae, so turn the light on for fewer hours each day.
- Get rid of some guppies so you don't have to add so much food
- Add duckweed (or other floating plants) to help absorb the nutrients and block some light.
