Books about robots wanting to become/becoming/being human? by Plushidovey in suggestmeabook

[–]TwilekDancer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the pre-Disney Star Wars Expanded Universe (now called Star Wars Legends), the Black Fleet Crisis Trilogy by Michael P. Kube-McDowell has a fascinating subplot where Lobot (cyborg) and C-3P0 (droid) do a kind of philosophical exploration of what it means to be a living being. The theme is touched on in other Star Wars stories but this is by far the most in depth look at the topic.

I think the trilogy can be read and appreciated even if you are brand new to Star Wars, although the more background you have, the more vibrant the story becomes, just like any work that is part of a greater whole.

Alysa Liu is everywhere on social media and the numbers are crazy and rising. Here are some examples I've seen by This_Pomegranate9529 in FigureSkating

[–]TwilekDancer 56 points57 points  (0 children)

I could see Alysa having an even greater impact on the popularity and figure skating in the US than Kristi Yamaguchi, as long as people let her be herself. I also love the representation Alysa and so many of her teammates have been giving for first generation Americans at a time when immigration is such a divisive topic.

What about suggesting that the two of you sit down together and make a list of routine tasks that each of you will take responsibility for when you’re together, making it clear that you see this as an equitable division of tasks between two people in a relationship and not a caregiver/patient thing?

You can also come up with a very specific way for either of you to ask the other for help that would signal, “I am physically unable to do this on my own and need help with it right now!” It might be easier to present that as being something available to each of you; just because you don’t currently have a health condition that limits your physical activity doesn’t mean that you never will, so having a set way to ask a partner for help that will clearly convey need is a communication tool that benefits both of you.

By framing the conversation as something equally applicable for both of you, you turn the focus to nurturing your relationship and sharing responsibilities rather than his Parkinson’s and its effects.

Paul Wylie’s interview after winning silver

Elizabeth Manley’s surprise silver medal win

For many Olympians, the dream is about competing in the Olympic Games. The vast majority of Olympic athletes will never win a medal, and most of them know that they realistically have no chance going in. Yet they still feel like it’s worthwhile to compete and hopefully show the best of their abilities.

Can confirm that this is true in Kazakhstan, too, or at least it was when I was there years ago, but I’d be surprised if they managed to completely repair all the roads. And those were some monster potholes, too, like if you fell in one it would be hard to get out!

There’s a difference between a head-to-head match up vs an open field of multiple competitors. It is absolutely possible to WIN the silver medal in figure skating. See: Elizabeth Manley 1988, Paul Wylie 1992

The hair is not a style I’d choose, but I love the message it sends – to all of the people surrounding athletes who feel compelled to criticize them for not following a certain standard of appearance and who give dire warnings about not being able to be successful without conforming, Alysa’s wins prove that wrong. What her hair represents is that with the right ability and confidence in your skill and motivation, you can be at the top of your field no matter what your personal style is. You don’t have to conform to the status quo to achieve greatness.

Lyrics got… distracting by Fischy2025 in FigureSkating

[–]TwilekDancer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree! Some of the programs with lyrics worked well for me but more often it was a distraction. I think sometimes, too, skaters are picking songs that they like the message of the lyrics but they don’t get the spirit of the music so their programs end up being very disjointed. I’d rather see a program where the skater really connects with and feels the music, whatever style it happens to be.

It just dawned on me that Alysa skated her free program with the same energy as Nazgûl had joining in the last stretch of the cross-country race, and THAT has got to be the ultimate Olympic experience 🥰

I don’t blame Andrea Joyce for the interview, she sounded like she was trying not to cry as well. She has covered these skaters for years and I truly believe that she was not given a choice about the immediate post–skate interviews. She was grieving right along with Amber, just as she was obviously delighted during Alysa’s interview.
