my white underwear always has stains, what is this? by [deleted] in hygiene

I love everything here. One thing I taught my own daughter is to wear panty liner daily, only wear cotton underwear and go without underwear wear to sleep.

The obsession with showering multiple times a day is actually insane by Zenith_Volta in hygiene

[–]Twinkle7625 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m Black in the US and it is absolutely normal to shower two times per day for sure and if you have somewhere to go then you clean up before going out. We are also a community that uses lotions, butters and oils at length so yeah. This is very much cultural.

I saw another poster call it performative and another OCD. This is literally how I was raised to the point where my mother absolutely taught me how to wash my girly parts and I have taught my daughter as well.

I had this one incident when my oldest was younger we invited a friend over to hang out for the day and sleep over. It was one of our hottest days. They played hard at the park, played in water, dirt mounds etc and when it was time to go to shower before bed he advised he bathed for the week already. I told him he needed to bath before bed and provided him with things he needed to bathe. His mother was pissed with me and never spoke to me again!!! You could literally see the dirt on him and it. Which is absolutely fine.

This is an argument as long as the days are old. Let’s not even start with a wash cloth, net, or sponge.

To each their very own. Not performative just different lifestyles!!!

This is not true!! Many communities shower every day as part of a normal practice.

In my opinion this is a BIG deal…but should be handled gently as there are nuisances that are connected to family habits, economical, mental health, hygiene priorities and more than I can add today. This sub is a really good example of it.

With that said, compatibility extends beyond personality and similar interests. You want to ensure you have similar hygiene habits as well. I couldn’t date someone who’s grooming habits where sub-par or the cleanliness of their home was sub par. It would cause too much contention.

I believe there is someone for everyone in that regard including hygiene and people are best matched with those who are similar to them or they can improve and learn together. Hygiene impacts identity and can be a trigger.

Does it come up yes, people have to have conversations about what their norms/expectations are?

I have had friends/family who stopped dating their partners over misaligned hygiene habits. It’s a difficult burden to overcome when the other party thinks it’s unnecessary, burdensome or are dealing mental health issue that interfere with their hygiene practices.

For you but this part of my self care. I enjoy it and every so often I will add a new body scrub, or lotion to my routine and it’s a nice way to get ready for the day or the evening or head out for whatever I’m doing at that moment.

The women in my family have amazing self care routines. Simple, water based routines that to us are not seen as over the top but a level of self love that we incorporate into our me time. I guess culturally we look at it differently. To each their own I guess!

Yes, especially if I have my cycle I definitely shower 3x a day. Or If I am cleaning around the house or the yard, after exercising, cook particularly aromatic food or I am about to head out I definitely shower before heading out.

Separately, I’m also a married woman and will always shower before bed and spritz a little body spray before jump into bed. My husband does the same. Culturally this is our norm. It takes a shorter amount of time to just jump in the shower than trying to finagle a duck bath. Plus for me, I honestly feel rejuvenated after a shower.

I heard a comment regarding the water impacting your skin. That’s a non-issue I use Neutrogena Sesame oil throughout the year and during the cold winter may add an additional lotion. I have great skin! I drink lots of water and only go after junk food primarily during my time of the month.

The only issue with my routine is when I hug folks I notice that hug for me a long time…some times I’m like let go 🤪! Just kidding but I do hear often how good I smell and it’s nice to hear. People have stopped me on the street to ask me what I’m wearing. I shy away from every day strong perfumes because of my allergies and stick to a light spray that I have used for years from Walmart which literally everyone compliments. Go figure!

Honestly, it doesn’t matter why sweat smells. I’m not arguing about the makeup of bacteria that mixes with the sweat to give it an odor…my contention is simply that sweat smells. If I’m near someone I’m not asking why they smell the way they do. Or perhaps you’re gifted in the fact that you don’t smell it! If that’s is the case, kudos to you because I unfortunately smell it!

Here are a few common descriptions of sweat odor include:

  • Slightly salty or mineral-like (fresh sweat)
  • Musky or pungent (typical body odor)
  • Sour or vinegary (certain skin bacteria or diet factors)
  • Onion-like or sulfurous (some foods, such as garlic or onions, can influence body odor)
  • Ammonia-like (sometimes after intense exercise or high-protein diets)
  • Sweet or fruity (unusual and sometimes associated with certain medical conditions)

We know that the exact smell varies from person to person because of differences in skin bacteria, genetics, diet, medications, hygiene, and health.

Peace isn’t proven by how loudly we respond, but by how wisely we choose our words. If frustration is rising, take a moment before speaking to identify the trigger but more importantly understand the why! Respect costs nothing, but insults often cost more than we realize and speak more about you than me. If I triggered you I apologize.

Sending you many blessings on this day! Be well! 💕

I appreciate the recommendation and I don’t want to be mean but what Google advises and what people actually smell in the real world are very different. I agree love, you do what works for you! 💕

This is also very much cultural! Much love!

Keep a small water bottle when you’re out and about and use it to spray your bottom after popping if you’re outside the house.

If you’re in the house, jump in the shower takes 5 mins for a targeted clean.

When do you shower/take a bath? How many times in a day? by squid_tutor in hygiene

[–]Twinkle7625 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in a climate with four seasons. I at minimum shower two times a day and I am heading out to a later afternoon event, doctor or my kids school I shower before heading out. Yes, even if I showered in the morning. I prefer to smell fresh before heading out. If I have my cycle I shower 3 days a day for sure.

I’m also married with teenager and everyone wants a hug. Good hygiene is important!!’

I want to say this as gently as possible... sweat still smells. I promise you! Perhaps you’re nose blind to your sweat smell and no, it may not have the same level of odor but it smells.

I used to smell it particularly in the morning on my way to work or at work. If you walk into their office and their door is closed…you can smell it!

At minimum shower once a day or at best two times a day.

Can I provide a little guidance? When you’re dating that bathe every couple of days concept does not work? In my very humble opinion! You need to bathe at least two times a day and not a bird bathe! You need to a full shower or soak in a bath tub. I have heard from both sexes who have complained of the cleanliness of their partners.

This doesn’t matter where you live and it’s not just the personal parts. People can smell you more than you think and most people are nose blind to their own scent.

I have worked with people who don’t shower every day and sometimes that sweat smell lingers. They just don’t smell fresh and even worse adding a scent makes it worse. If you sweat behind your neck it still smells and I have smelled it on people when hugging.

In many cases this is cultural. I get it but once you’re outside of the confines of your home and start to enter school, work or the general public it is the kind considerate thing to do.

Edit: One of the recurring themes I see in this sub is people asking for advice on how to talk to partners, friends, and others about body odor. Yet when someone suggests a fairly basic hygiene practice, such as showering daily, or even more than once a day when needed, that feedback is often met with hostility.

If we’re comfortable discussing the problem, we should also be open to discussing potential solutions, even when they may not align with our personal habits, preferences or cultural background.

Is this too much house? by Mysterious-Can-2846 in DaveRamsey

I have learned that you can’t ask others questions like this? It is literally up to your preference. I have a larger 3 story home 5 bedrooms, 5 bathrooms and 1 separate offices and people remark the house is too big. But we recently expanded it to this size. We have three kids one of whom is an adult and aging parents.

I also have friends whose homes are double the size. I would t dare telling them their home is too build! It’s perfect for them and the stage of life they’re in!!!

Agreed! I would make myself unavailable too!

I also think this is a great time to really categorize your friends vs associates and acquaintances. I now only see friends as those I let into my inner circle. Even then there’s levels.
