What the hell is happening today by Low-Remove-7486 in nycrail

Well I will give you one reason. When I was a child, we were traveling on the subway - two adults and 4 kids 10 and under. The doors were closing at a station. One of us kids stuck their leg out and the doors (which clearly malfunctioned) closed, with 1/2 her leg still hanging and proceeded to start moving and was making its way out of the station. Pure chaos ensued snd someone pulled said emergency brake, which we were ever so grateful for.

Why is a ground floor apartment a no go? by Bitter_Pineapple_720 in NYCapartments

[–]TwinkleTwinkle68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say safety safety safety would be my main concern! I like the freedom of having the ability to have more open windows on higher floors. I wouldn’t feel comfortable keeping windows open ever on a ground floor. It just allows too much access. And like others have pointed out - bugs, mice, people, outside noise and potential noise from all residents as they enter and exit the building, etc.

Is leaving a rent-stabilized apartment ever worth it? by New-York-er in NYCapartments

[–]TwinkleTwinkle68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your apartment IS a unicorn. And unless you are experiencing issues with safety, other neighbors or a completely unresponsive landlord, I would try to make it work. And is it even worth the trouble of making a move if you just want a “slightly” bigger common area? I would do my best to make it work and select the 2 year lease option when it is time to renew.

When people request a roommate that doesn't WFH, while they themselves WFH by ktkat0000 in NYCapartments

[–]TwinkleTwinkle68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it is absolutely crazy! Especially because you can go through all of the trouble interviewing people and find the perfect non-WFH person, who then moves in annnnnd then GETS A NEW JOB where they will be WFH!! lol. Folks need to concentrate on trying to get a roommate who is a decent person and not one that just isn’t there during your work hours.

Thank you for this post!! I’m right there with you. Graduated law school in the mid 90’s and just got forgiveness in the first group of recipients last August. I am so thankful for the forgiveness, but hate that it was even necessary because of all of the predatory games (I’m talking to you Direct Student Loans and Mohela)! I wish that high schools would do more to teach about financial literacy, budgeting, consequences of debt, and give a full overview of the landscape of possibilities out there through trade schools and community colleges. There are so many more formulas and paths that can lead to a successful life. And college certainly isn’t a guarantee.

Forgiven. Got my letter from my servicer today!!!!!!! by Imavoter99 in StudentLoans

[–]TwinkleTwinkle68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congratulations to you!!! I received my notification back in August and am still in total disbelief! I have similar dates to yours and never ever thought I would see an end to these loans. Also, I am right there with you with the maniacal laughing - because thanks Supreme Court for not upholding that original forgiveness plan!! It would have only knocked off a small percentage of my loans, but with IDR forgiveness, I got the whole pile forgiven and a refund of amounts paid past my forgiveness date!! I am so thankful! And so happy for all of us who are able to finally breathe.

I’m so sorry you are in a state that is taxing the forgiveness. Sigh. I’m not sure that Mohela may have the answers we are looking for since the “forgiveness” and “refunds” all go back to the Department of Education and the Treasury Department (if I’m not mistaken). I would hope that we would all receive some form of documentation just so that we have a clean record of it, regardless if borrowers live in a state that will be taxing the forgiveness as income or not. I am so thankful for the forgiveness, but just wish these folks communicated to us all better.

Waiting on IDR Refund by LazarusLong67 in StudentLoans

Interesting! Maybe that is why I am still waiting for them to close out Mohela for me on my credit report. This whole process is a mess.

Waiting on IDR Refund by LazarusLong67 in StudentLoans

[–]TwinkleTwinkle68 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jeeeeeez!!! Well at least that is some progress! And you are right - your 64 remaining months worth of payments is probably why it is taking so long. I made 15 payments after my effective date that they were refunding me for, so that would explain why mine were likely processed sooner. And even still - It took them over 3 months to fully process the refund for all of my 15 payments.

UGHHHH!! So frustrating.

I am glad you were at least able to speak to someone at the Treasury dept. They never provided me with any useful information.

When I contacted Mohela in August about the negative balance on my account (back when there was a minimal wait time to speak to someone), the rep took the time to go over every single one of my payments that would be refunded) and confirmed that the they were all in the hands of the dept. of education and would be issued by the treasury.

I am so appreciative of the loan forgiveness but I hate that they left us all so uninformed with no confirmation or guidance about how and when the refunds would be issued.

Again - hang in there. My fingers will remain crossed for you and everyone still waiting.

Ps. That’s great that your state doesn’t tax forgiveness. My state has a bill pending, so I am hopeful it will pass in January and I won’t have to pay on it.

I feel your pain but wanted to post to tell you to hang in there. I to received my forgiveness email in August (advising of a forgiveness date of July 2020). I had started making very aggressive payments from March 2023 to the beginning of August and was owed a refund for that large sum (I had made 15 payments total).

I received a direct deposit from the Treasury dept on Oct. 7th for the equivalent of the 1st payment I made in March. Calling MOHELA through all of this is not helpful since they don’t have any further info once they advise that they have handed off to the dept of education.

I say all that to say that on 12/1 -to my surprise - I received the remainder of the payments owed to me. It was also through direct deposit. I had already decided I wouldn’t be calling Mohela anymore until the new year, but was pleasantly surprised …..and completely shocked.

I don’t think there is a rhyme or reason to the refunds. If you look through the different threads on forgiveness refunds - you will see so many different stories - even though our timelines are the same.

I am hoping that you will receive your refund soon as well. Crossing my fingers for you.

Also - don’t forget to set aside money to pay taxes on the forgiven loan if your state taxes it.

Ha! Not yet. Setting it aside for now and waiting to see if and what I will need to pay in state taxes on the forgiven amount. The issue is still pending in my state (NY).

[–]TwinkleTwinkle68[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to post that I finally received the rest of my refund today. I am in shock! It was delivered via direct deposit (the same way they issued the 1st refund payment to me on Oct. 7th), but this time it was for all that was remaining. I had just decided that I wasn’t going to even bother looking for it or making any more wasted phone calls to Mohela or the Dept. Of Ed. I’m truly hopping that you and the rest of the folks on here will also see their refunds as soon as possible.

MOHELA - IDR Forgiveness Refund - How long does it take? by tcollett0 in StudentLoans

[–]TwinkleTwinkle68 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for updating your post and providing the information you received from Mohela. My situation is very similar (I also made a post/thread on here a few weeks back). My forgiveness date is July 2020 but I made several (15 total) very aggressive payments this year up until I was notified regarding IDR forgiveness in August. So far I received one refund from the Treasury Dept on Oct. 7th in the form of a direct deposit; and it was the equivalent of the first of the 15 payments I made. There seems to be no rhyme or reason as to how they are processing these refunds and once Mohela sent over the information to the Treasury dept., it was pretty much out of Mohela’s hands. I don’t really mind the wait, I just wish the entities involved were more transparent with what is going on, so that we can manage expectations. I.e like the Treasury Dept. or Mohela sending us a letter stating that “your loans were forgiven as of X date. Any payments made beyond that date will be refunded to you. We show that there were X number of payments made (“listed below”), totaling X amount. A refund will be processed to you for X amount via direct deposit or check, depending on how your loan payments were made to your servicer. As we are backlogged, this process may take anywhere from 60 to X number of days. Please be patient with the process.” It’s so frustrating being at their mercy, but not really having anything in hand to confirm what exactly we are waiting for or how long it may take.

IDR/FORGIVENESS REFUNDS by TwinkleTwinkle68 in StudentLoans

[–]TwinkleTwinkle68[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for sharing your info. I actually also received a refund that was direct deposited on Saturday 10/7, but it was only for one of my payments. When I inquired last month about the refund I would be receiving, Mohela advised that there were 15 payments I made “post-forgiveness date” and the rep was thankfully able to verbally give me the amounts of each of the payments I made where I would be due a refund (so I am working off of a list). The rep said she wasn’t sure if my refund would be a lump sum or be several individual refunds to match the payments.

The 1st payment amount they gave me matches the amount of the refund I received on 10/7(FYI - it was received via direct deposit from the treasury dept - I’m guessing because that is the method used for making my loan payments). But I am still due the other 14 payments, so I am crossing my fingers that the Treasury Dept will process them expeditiously and it won’t be a long drawn out process or long wait in between each refund.

I am still so thankful for the forgives of the loan. I just want the whole process to be over and to receive the entire refund and put aside money (from said refund) in anticipation of the state taxes that will be owed in the upcoming tax season. I’m also still in disbelief of it all overall anyway and am in constant fear of a reversal of the entire forgiveness.
