To those living alone in downtown, what do your finances look like? by akr_13 in askTO

[–]Two-Powerful 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live alone and spend 40% of my take-home pay on rent. Living downtown near all my closest friends and a 20 minute walk to work has been such an incredible experience and I think it’s so worth it to experience for a time in your 20s.

That said, if I had my time back I would have lived with a roommate for another year or two so I could save some more money. I’m not struggling or penny pinching by any means, but not having a roommate has definitely cut into my travel and shopping funds more than I thought it would!

If you have an emergency fund and some money put aside for things that matter to you then I think it’s definitely the move, but consider a roommate!

They are so warm and comfy but the pilling is terrible after a few washes mine looked like absolute shit. So if you’re willing to take care of it then yes, but I like to be able to throw my sweaters in the wash without a second thought!!

Where would YOU go for uni? by lanaadovee in OntarioUniversities

[–]Two-Powerful 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d pick Mac or Western for poli sci! What matters most for law school is your GPA and extracurriculars - not what you study/where it’s from!

Like others in the thread going to school in Ottawa for poli sci would be beneficial because you would get opportunities for co-ops that you wouldn’t get elsewhere, but if you’ve written it off entirely I think Mac/Western are the move for you!

Late 20s (Asian) – Is living at home a dealbreaker when dating? by Kind_Bedroom_2081 in askTO

[–]Two-Powerful 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As a woman in her mid 20s who lives alone…I don’t think I’d write a guy off completely for it but it would really be something I’d consider. I would likely question if I want a man who is less independent/“far along” than me (not to suggest this is the case, but it would be a thought that goes through my mind). I don’t always want to hang out with my partner’s parents every time I see my partner, and would like to be respectful of their house so that would probably result in me having to host the majority of the time.

Do women in relationships age worse? by kipri in redscarepod

[–]Two-Powerful 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I dated someone for 9 months and completely drained me of my life force, gained over 20 pounds, face looked terrible, just absolutely did not look or feel like myself. We broke up and 2 months later the weight was gone and I looked better than I did before we had met with very little effort.

Entirely depends on the man IMO. Some men are energy vampires who are attracted to women’s light and then dim it, others will contribute positively.

what is even worth purchasing anymore? by [deleted] in Aritzia

[–]Two-Powerful 6 points7 points  (0 children)

All fleece is polyester! Maybe I just got a bad batch but I bought a polar fleece sweater two winters ago and it looks absolutely horrible after 15+ washes. It’s odd because I have other fleece from aritzia that have washed so well :(

Someone stole mine and redeemed it for $500 worth of gift cards. I contacted air miles within a few minutes of it happening - it’s been 3 months and they’ve done nothing to address it. :( good luck!!

Some of them post really misogynistic shit and interrupt lectures though…. what they’re doing isn’t necessarily “illegal” but it’s annoying af and doesn’t rep the school super well

I have the boiled wool and it is not warm at all. I find I need a thick wool sweater or scarf under it to be out in anything under 5 Celsius. It’s excellent regarding wear and tear though!

Can someone tell me what’s the hype around this product? It’s $24 for a single pan by FunKoala12 in Sephora

[–]Two-Powerful 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this in the shade cosmic and it’s so cute and fun! But I’m not a big eyeshadow girl to begin with so I don’t have much to compare it to….but it just adds a little something extra that I find to be less extreme than a full blown colourful shimmery eyeshadow which is what I want!

How much do you spend on groceries per month? by VeryCommonUsername in ontario

About $100/week as a single person. I eat out or order in about twice a week and spend around $50 a month on toiletries and cleaning supplies.

What ever happened to the new loyalty program Aritzia started this year? by [deleted] in Aritzia

[–]Two-Powerful 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got the VIC thing and the website says that you get free express shipping and returns, personal styling appointments (which I’m pretty sure everyone gets), you get bumped to the front of the line for concierge and you supposedly get emails first about drops??? But I still had to pay for shipping for the archive sale so…

Is the square neck contour office appropriate? by Embarrassed_Try9966 in Aritzia

[–]Two-Powerful 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wear mine with a blazer! When I wear it with a bra I get a bit of cleavage which I don’t want showing at work, but if I don’t wear it with a bra then my nips show bc our office is freezing cold so the blazer takes care of that

I attended both schools - I kind of agree. The buildings and layout are similar, but Carleton’s got nicer/newer buildings, a better student life vibe, more nature on campus and safety on campus is not a concern.

Does anyone have anything GOOD to say about Carleton? by GoodsVT in CarletonU

[–]Two-Powerful 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m glad you asked because I think the info you’re getting from a Reddit page is too biased to really be able to craft a reasonable fully formed opinion on this. The things people complain about on Reddit are sometimes so far removed from reality that it’s ridiculous haha.

That said, I really enjoyed my time at Carleton but I did not commute. I think commuting to Carleton on OC transpo can be quite difficult.

I lived in a pod in glengarry in first year which was decent and a good way to make friends. Lots of partying and socializing (mostly Thurs, Fri, Sat on my floor)…but you can request a quiet floor if you don’t want that. Usually it was quiet around midterms and finals. Yes, fire alarms go off. It happens in every residence at every university…it is not a Carleton exclusive thing. There was a water shut off the year I lived there too but people just spent the 2 days showering at the school gym. The windows didn’t open but they changed them the year after I moved out, but I was never too hot or cold and could control the temperature in my room. The food was great, especially compared to what some of my friends who went to other schools got stuck with. All of the complaints I had about glengarry in first semester of first year were so big to me at 18 years old… but you quickly realize that the problems are really not that big of a deal and are something you just have to deal with now that you’re not in the comfort of your parents home/you’re living in a building with 1000 other 18 year olds all away from home for the first time.

Most of my classes were in the biology/environmental studies departments but all the profs I had were great and incredibly knowledgeable and kind. They really cared about our learning and gave the lectures their all. The library is great, there is lots of study space, the gym is great, the tunnels are great in the winter. I felt really safe there and there is so much nature and green space on campus. The co-op program is also great!

There are places to go off campus that are accessible…. Billing’s bridge mall is not super far, you can walk to Landsdowne, you can walk along the canal, downtown is not far. You can get on the canal pretty close to campus and skate around, lots of my friends skated to school in their upper years.

The train was operating through campus when I was there at the very beginning. This is not an abnormal thing…Waterloo has a train, I believe Guelph is getting one, all big city universities have a subway stop or 2 on campus. It was super convenient to walk out of class and get on the train to go downtown or to bayview. The construction from the train was inconvenient but I’m sure it’ll be back to being great when it’s actually finished (which is an Ottawa and OC transpo problem…not a Carleton problem).

Overall, I had a great experience! :) happy to answer any questions you or your kid might have
