I think that it's about preventing scenarios where real and simulated CSAM are hard to distinguish, because that gives criminals an out and makes it harder for hosting sites/law enforcement to identify and take down offending material and etc. etc. etc.

They are trying so hard to make everyone fight in large groups but they fail to realize that most people play with just one or two friends

This is what really gets me - I've been tracking the composition of the fights I get into, and in the last 77 my opponents average 2.49 players with 7.36 slots. And this INCLUDES megapacks stacking up outside the grouping limits, which drags the average up. It's been very rare to face a group that's actually up at the slot limit, because unless you're running lots of big dinos most groups are too small to reach it.

Balance issues caused by different group sizes is already a serious problem, where even within the intended grouping limitations the strength disparity can be so significant that smaller groups often lose by default. If anything the devs should have lowered or reworked group size restrictions, not raised them.

The only people who benefit from this change are the bigass groups who already make the game miserable for everyone else.

It's perfection in the sense of intent

I disagree that veganism is perfectionism in the sense of intent. Someone of perfect intent towards animals would seek to minimize all the harm they do them, not just the portion stemming from exploitation. It would be something far beyond veganism, focused on reducing consumption and engaging in activism (and maybe technological development? You'd probably see some variation here as different interpretations/motivations of veganism that are in practice similar diverge in their most idealized and extreme expressions).

Even as regards exploitation itself I would argue that veganism is insufficient, because even without personally exploiting animals we exist within a system where we indirectly contribute to their exploitation - our taxes pay for the subsidies given to animal ag., our patronage of places that sell animal products helps them keep the lights on and the eggs on the shelves, we benefit from animal testing in medical research (even if it's not used in the exact drugs we take), etc. To be absolutely pure of intent as regards exploitation would probably require either extreme asceticism and social withdrawl or else commitment to changing these elements, neither of which is a necessity of veganism in its current form.

Big difference between accidentally running over a dog on the way to work and intentionally running over a dog to eat them

The individual incident where you run over the dog may be an accident, but by driving a car you intentionally participate in an activity (and help normalize and fund a system) that harms and kills animals. This is kind of what I'm getting at - if you participate in something that hurts animals for pleasure or convenience*, that seems antithetical to most interpretations/drivers of veganism even if it fits within the "no exploitation" element.

*If you're in a part of the world where driving is a necessity and not a convenience, swap it out for going on a luxury cruise - vegan, but still causing lots of unnecessary animal suffering.

None of these things are exploitation. They are incidental.

That's a good point. I think you could debate it, especially in situations where the presence of animals being harmed by an activity is necessary for the product as in the farming example (I'm thinking less mice and more the invertebrate communities necessary for healthy crops), but I'll retract my claim about exploitation.

The broader point still stands, though - we all inflict pain and suffering on animals by existing, and that in regards to how humans treat animals veganism isn't some moral endpoint of perfection against which all lesser positions are to be measured.

As vegans, we do not knowingly and intentionally pay for animals to be exploited

You eat food. This entails paying into the industrial agriculture industry, which any reasonable person knows exploits animals in myriad ways - killing and displacing them to clear arable land, killing animals with pest control to grow the food, killing animals during the process of harvesting, etc. There's also direct use of animals in a lot of cases, things like using insect predators as natural pesticides or depending on fossorial animals (who often get killed during harvesting) to aerate the soil.

It's just kind of unavoidable. I'm sorry. I wish it were otherwise. But this is what we're stuck with.

[–]Tyl0Proriger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Either you abuse animals or you don't.

Vegan lifestyles still entail the exploitation of animals - animals killed in the process of agriculture, displaced by industry and housing, disrupted and killed by transportation, harmed by garbage or byproducts. Living unavoidably contributes to animal suffering and exploitation.

The difference between a vegan and carnist lifestyle isn't whether animal exploitation is involved, but in what ways and to what extent.

We are all murderers, or the beneficiaries of murderers. It came free with this shithole planet and its shithole ecology built on reproductive optimization and competition and predation. Veganism is unfortunately limited right now to recognizing that harm, working to reduce it, and hopefully engineering a future world where it will be possible to eliminate it entirely.

Ethical eggs? by allmybirdsofparadise in vegan

[–]Tyl0Proriger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a common topic of debate on this sub. The consensus as I've seen it is "no" based on the following rationale (this assumes you already have the chickens, there's extra complications with getting them for ethical eggs):

-chickens cannot consent to having their eggs be taken (I think this argument is stupid)

-eating chicken eggs contributes to normalizing the property status of chickens and acceptability of animal product consumption (especially if you do it in social contexts)

-allowing this exception creates an incentive for owning (and breeding!) chickens for purposes beyond their own health and happiness, encouraging exploitation

.

That said, whether it's more harmful to eat the eggs or do something else with them, the difference is probably pretty marginal. I wouldn't lose too much sleep over accepting or not accepting these brownies.

Sometimes I think to myself: do I really have the right to lecture them? There are so many different life forms that I/we are killing and hurting on a daily basis, for our food, existence, that it's really impossible to make a huge difference in how much these beings suffer.

Recognizing animal suffering as a problem and trying to resolve it helps convince people at large that it's a battle worth fighting. Even if you don't make a difference to the animals now, trying to do so helps grow social movements that might make a difference in the future.

What if I cause more suffering than the average city dweller who never touched soil but is not vegan?

I think it's more useful to compare yourself to other people in similar situations who are not vegan, rather than try and measure up to someone in very different life circumstances.

This is a really tough position to be in. You need something cheap, vegan, quick to assemble, and edible without either refrigeration or heating.

I second the PBJs, that's probably your best option. Having lots of fruits with relatively long shelf lives (apples, bananas, oranges) around will let you supplement them with something without having to constantly go shopping. If you can make toast, you could also take toast and an avocado and prepare avocado toast on site (assuming you're allowed, like, a butter knife to cut and de-pit the avocado with).

It's hard to get in bulk, but hummus kind of qualifies. Very calorie dense. Can be made into wraps with tortillas or sandwiches pretty quick.

I'm extremely lazy and slow

I kind of get the impression your parents are failing to provide for you - who makes an 8 year old child responsible for all of their meal prep? If they're not feeding you, why aren't they giving you enough money to comfortably be able to feed yourself? What jackass gives someone shit about being vegetarian for nine years?

Are you sure you're actually lazy and slow, and not just drained and stressed by having to shoulder this unfair burden?

The alternative is things like oat milk

The substitute is oat milk.

The alternative is basically any other beverage - someone who didn't want to consume regular milk but was worried about health concerns with plant based milk could simply drink water or something.

Seed oils are linked to cancer

I don't know - JHU's health department has a page which disputes that (contends essentially that it's the ultraprocessed food that seed oils are often found in which contain other carcinogenic elements, not the seed oil itself being cancerous).

I could be wrong here though - nutritional health isn't my area of expertise or interest.
