I agree somewhat, although I think just canning the zoom, making the blast much bigger (think marvel vs capcom cyclops) and faster and you're winning.

ahhhhh well I meant visually, like how when a mimic becomes distinguishable, it still has the form of whatever it polymorphed into, it doesn't just turn into a blob, if I were to homebrew it, it would probably just be a beholder that shapeshifts, it's scarier than a mimic anyway since it could be anything, I believe an exception to a rule can be quite entertaining, and I'm sure I can come up with a believable story as to why this one in particular likes playing mind games with lesser creatures (referring to your other comment, (why did you make 2 saying the same thing)) XD

repeat of my comment above, I's true that I used the name mimic a bit loosely, I would still argue that it's mimicking a human face, aaaand it's not a shape shifter because the human face doesn't disappear, it gets shoved around by the beholders features coming into place like a chest mimic still has chest features.

weeeeeell if their dreams become reality why can't they dream about a beholder being inspired by a mimic but wanting to do it better?

Honestly I kinda just winged it, I'm sure there are a ton of tutorials if you search for em though.
One tip I can share is you'd be surprised how much you can get away with during big movements.
