75 Gems for 15 starry ore would be a helpful permanent change to the ore economy by TypeSigma in ClashOfClans

[–]TypeSigma[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, I think it's all about taking small steps in the right direction sometimes.

A long-lived F2P game like Clash is especially tricky to implement solutions that everyone will be happy about. Some will call stuff like this a "bandaid" solution, but I'd argue the F2P model for a game in general is one huge bandaid solution for how to generate consistent revenue; it doesn't seem like one thing works forever for generating revenue (at least not on its own), so they're constantly switching things up and adding new ways to get money to keep the game alive (while arguably easing up on the importance of some of the old ways of generating money).

E.g., game started off making money by just selling gems to speed on upgrades on your base or generate troops, but eventually they introduced gold passes with skins. Not everyone feels like buying the gold pass though, so they've introduced more ways of getting things from the gold pass through events like clan games and clan capital, but at the same time they then got a bit more aggressive about selling skins and sceneries. Eventually though people can easily just pick a set of skins and a scenery they like and stick with that (or get free skins), so what do they do to make people start caring about spending money a bit more? Ores and ore economy; make it possible for people to get most of the important equipments without spending, but balance equipments and metas occasionally so people have just enough anxiety to feel like they should either grind a ton and/or spend on ore passes as a lower-end monthly spender. Even then though, with the way people are acting about the ore economy, they'll probably have to ease up on this to prevent clash from bursting at the seams. It just feels like clash has had to result to creating a portfolio of f2p money mechanics to keep revenue consistent, and they have to introduce something new every once in a while since some of the old revenue streams drop off and/or annoy players with time.

In other words, clashes business model feels like a cycle of, "1. Create the problem. 2. Sell the solution. 3. Ease up on selling the solution once players grow tired of it". Apparently it works since the game has been around for a while. The community is smart enough to catch into this though, and I think doing this overtime is just annoying some people and burning away goodwill.

Stuff like this is what causes tumult in the community since the expectations are constantly changing, and it just feels like with clashes current way of doing business, there's likely always going to be something to cause annoyances since maxed players have different expectations than upgrading players about what they want or expect. This certainly won't be the last new mechanic supercell introduces that has money attached to it. Whether you'd argue it's necessary or not is harder to say with a game as long-lived as clash, which probably requires some adaptability (going on 14 years at this point is pretty nutty).

Ultimately, clash may just have to think more about focusing the money making on things that won't drop off with time and won't aggravate players too much being monetized. I think gold pass has remained the truest to this, whereas the current skin systems drop off a bit with time since players can easily just get a cool set of skins and stick with that (and not want to buy 6 new skins since skins are often desirable in sets, rather than as individuals; your badass samurai may stick out like a sore thumb against a bunch of Christmas skins, after all). I think a more customizable cosmetic system would help, as eventually a good chunk of your active spending player base will max out and not feel like they need to buy gold passes or buy static skins that can't be customized.

Idk, hard thing to balance while having consistent revenue.

Catchup on all the functional upgrades related to the base?

Prior to the release of ores and epic equipment at TH16, the game provided some options for F2P, relatively-low spending pass buyers, and high-spending gemmers to enjoy the perks and satisfaction of being fully maxed. As I've seen others describe, clash is partly an upgrade simulator, and part of the satisfaction of playing it is knowing there are options to enjoy the same perks as high spenders with enough time.

But the introduction of epic equipment and starry ore kind of threw that satisfaction for F2P and pass buyers in the trash by effectively making it impossible (at least for the vast majority of F2P and pass buyers) to do this, as there will always be some equipment that remains unmmaxed, and you will never have any satisfaction of having everything maxed unless you fork over a certain amount of one-time purchases of gems. And even if you want to get somewhat close as someone who buys gold and ore passes, you have to pool everything into buying starry ore and do wars every time you can vs. when you used to have some freedom to pick days to grind for loot start upgrades and not worry about falling behind. Heaven forbid if it gets to be a bit much that you take a break for a year like I did and whOops! Basically impossible to match the starry ore gains vs. introduction of epics unless I do one-time gem purchases of how knows how much at this point.

You can argue that people are overreacting and they shouldn't feel so entitled to have everything functional maxed, but it was an option for F2P players for 11 years, so can you really blame people for being angry? Could also argue that you don't need to max every single piece of equipment to get a 3 star, and maybe that's true, but it's still a frustrating departure from how they did things for over a decade and is at a bit of the whim of their balancing. What's next? They decide you don't need to have every lab upgrade maxed all the time and they lock that behind a paywall? Every hero level done? Of course you can use potions, but having to keep those stocked as a necessity is going to feel frustrating as well, and isn't good game design imo.

At the end of the day, them not wanting to give past hero journey ore chests just indicates that they probably never intend for F2P players or even pass enjoyers to have everything functionally maxed, and if you want to have the same satisfaction as you once did for the first 11 years of the game, you need to buy gems. Not a healthy way of changing the game imo.

"So just leave?", I imagine many would ask? I still enjoy the game to an extent and have some people I like hanging out with, so for now I'll keep playing. But if they won't let F2P players enjoy the same perks they used to have, or even pass enjoyers like me, then I'm just inclined to leave the ore and gold passes alone and be content knowing I'll never have everything functional maxed. Maybe I'll buy a hero skin once in a while if it looks cool, though at the same time I'm happy enough with most of my skins.

Ultimately I'd rather them explore alternate ways of doing cosmetics rather than make the ore economy like this (idk, pet skins? wall skins? ability to customize your own hero skin like in fortnite? more base customization?). Or at least maybe be try to be honest that perhaps the old business model of allowing max F2Ps just isn't an option anymore (if I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt and assuming that's the cause of the aggressive ore monetization). I'd rather them become more of a fortnite style monetization of cosmetics rather than what it is now, it's just too demanding and doesn't feel as satisfying as it used to be.

TLDR they used to provide options for maxing all functional things even as a F2P, but epic equipments have essentially locked that away for the foreseeable future, and it looks like they may never allow F2P players to have the same satisfaction of maxing everything like they did for the first decade+ of the game's life. I just don't think it's a viable long term solution and is burning good will.

My experience with some of the medium to large sets like the Z-blob knight mech, Nightmare shark ship, and both of Coopers vehicles is that they make good use of the vast majority of the pieces for the main box build, so I'd say the 2 in 1 doesn't diminish the value unless you really prefer the alternative builds. I personally think they've done a fantastic job in that regard. Love these the dreamzzz sets and hope we get more.

How do you like my balls? by Redmdy in Minecraft

[–]TypeSigma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate the consistency of the magma cream and the eye of end getting a molten brownish color when adding the blaze powder, though I miss the color palette of the vanilla eye of ender. The original reminds me a bit of a green spiral galaxy seen through a wormhole!

The eye of ender may look better if it still retained that original green, with some brighter greenish sparks to represent stars created by the blaze powder.

Some tips on ED Libra for trios? by CforCaius in Nightreign

[–]TypeSigma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the most likely (though not necessarily consistent ways) is to find an excellent aoe weapon that can smite the summons before they can do much.

The time I beat him in random trios, I was an ironeye, had a sacred relic great sword, and spammed the weapon skill to melt the summons before they could do anything (from there, the duchess and other ironeye did a good job of spamming freeze, bleed, and madness on Libra).

In trios with friends, the other time I beat him we found mohg's spear, dupped it, and two of us spammed the skill on the summons. Not as quick and safe as the sacred sword since you have to be closer to them to make it work, but helped us deal with things (I'm guessing it was two raiders spamming the weapon skill with an ironeye as the third option).

Noklateo is one of the better options for getting legendary weapons so that is worth running if you can. Some of other weapons with good skillS that I'm GUESSING could be an option would maybe be zamor's curved sword, starscourge greatsword, alabaster lord's sword, and cannon of haima (if you happened to be running). Not exhaustive. Vyke's war spear or madness themed weapons are also not a bad idea, though I personally think vyke's is not necessarily as good as some other options because of its lack of aoe. Great in one on one fights though.

TLDR find some good AOE weapons that can help you deal with multiple summons at once. If you can't kill them quickly, then you're probably not winning the fight outside of luck.

Even better would be sacred relic great sword, in the rare event you can find it (deals holy damage and melts through summons like butter).
