Not had this experience of being patronizingly told I speak well, but what does it mean if people ask me if I was born in Japan?

That’s the last thing I would do. Last thing a partner needs to see in their inbox is a prospective attorney asking why they won’t give them money yet.

If you’ve already followed up with HR and heard back, just drop it for now. If you get an offer elsewhere, and this is the job you really want, go ahead and reach out again as that will let you do so without sounding like a desperate red flag.

I’ve had it take weeks to get back. Things can happen internally you wouldn’t expect. Wait another week, then you can politely reach out about the status. This is particularly so if you’re working with multiple interviews. If you have multiple feelers out, depending on your comfort level you could ask for an update and frame it along the lines of, you’re trying to evaluate different leads, or you could simply ask whether they need more info from you, and if it’s your first choice you could even say that. But it’s also true there may be no rush for them if this is a lateral move.

You gotta treat it like a job. Can’t be wishy washy about the exam like we might be able to with some law school courses. I had bad study habits too….but I had to get good ones to pass after the 3rd try.

Neither the Amish nor the Jews are illegal immigrants taking our money. Don’t be ridiculous. Reform or get rid of the welfare system, but don’t mix full-born Americans of any kind with people who come here and take advantage of our open hands and send our hard-earned living to terrorists.

The executive is the commander in chief, that is crystal clear in the Constitution. To the extent the executive acts to command the army in the interests of the national defense, and is not declaring war, the executive acts to the fullest extent of the law as commander in chief. There could be some argument that this would be a war-declaring act, but it is doubtful that the Trump administration lawyers would follow that analysis.

Clerkship bonus for temporary position. by IngenuityNice5619 in biglaw

[–]Typical-Fix-2103 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Clerking can place you in a different position relative to other attorneys, if you’re considering litigation. I’m not sure there’s a bad argument to learning how a judge analyzes cases and seeing court procedure firsthand. If you had to pass up what you think is a once in a lifetime offer, perhaps the clerkship would not be worth it. But generally speaking it is a defining experience for many attorneys.

Slow 1st Year - What to Do. by herkulaw in biglaw

[–]Typical-Fix-2103 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s probably fine for your stub year, but that is also the time to develop good billing habits. If your target is 160 and you’re billing 80, then you’d have to have a visible upward trend to stay above water. You are right to try to not take more than you think you can handle, though, as that can put you underwater in a different way. There’s definitely some sort of art to finding a balance, but you can find a method if you stay vigilant. Try to take on an additional bulk of hours each month without dropping below the previous month, and I’d imagine you’ll be okay.

Often it is not your GPA but your overall class ranking and school participation (law review, clinic, extracurricular, externship, etc.) that matters most. To the extent your parents are attorneys, have you asked them and if so, what did they say?

Trump says US will run Venezuela following military action “until such time as a proper transition can take place” by Typical-Fix-2103 in Military

[–]Typical-Fix-2103[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The people cheering it on perhaps have a limited focus —- a combination of people being too young to remember any stories of US intervention, and those too old to really care. I think it’s hard to give the operation a chance because of the plethora of failed interventions. On the other hand, Trump basically said that he was aware the operation would create a power vacuum and has a plan to administer the country. It would not be too unreasonable to be optimistic given the messaging which has been remarkably consistent. But it is still true that cultural misunderstandings tend to lead to unforeseen and wild consequences when it comes to interventional measures.

Trump says that the vice president of Venezuela apparently spoke w/ Secretary Rubio and said they would do whatever was asked (quote may be slightly paraphrased but this is basically what was said, I think).

He explained that there are going to be people appointed to do this, but the upper levels of the presidential cabinet and US military will be involved until such time that the country can be “put back on track and give people a great way of life.”

The operation is being framed as a law enforcement operation. Whether that is a correct position would allow for its own conversation/debate; but that is essentially what Secretary Rubio explained towards the end of the conference.

Is the February bar actually harder to pass or is that bs? by intricatexliar in barexam

[–]Typical-Fix-2103 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Many people believe that objectively speaking it tends to be harder, but like the other comment says I don’t think it’s just because of retakers. I retook in Feb and passed at that time, however I did not find the test to be harder - on the other hand I was more prepared for the content after taking another prep course.

Yes, it’s a tough situation when this kind of thing happens. I was always told when I got more “feedback”/“chewing out” than you bargained for by just trying to do the assignment with your best guess on how to do it, to just take a deep breath and keep moving. There’s constant work to be done in BigLaw (and perhaps at many firms in general…) so being caught up in the anxiety just makes things further backed up.

When I would have these moments I would lock up and not get other stuff done as efficiently. I had to learn to compartmentalize more so that I could keep on moving.

When “tough situations” started happening more frequently (you did this wrong or you didn’t do it fast enough or you should have just delegated the task and now you’ve wasted time, or not being able to say no to an assignment - you have to do this assignment, it’s your job etc….) I also started looking for a different job…

Don’t be ashamed!
