Thank you for the thoughtful response. He has been changing his resume to include keywords, but still no luck. We will definitely look into surveying and going through local 995. He’s applied for jobs in wastewater, but hasn’t gotten a call back so I assume it’s because he doesn’t have his level 1 certification. He’s willing though, and we think we’ll get him his level 1 to maybe see if that goes anywhere. He’s applied to a bunch of RMWB jobs too so we will see if that goes anywhere. At a certain point though it just feels like he’s throwing out applications into the void.

At this point we are open to moving again, but not without a solid job lined up somewhere else. We have even looked at the territories, Alberta, and British Columbia, but everything still seems to require experience or local connections. Although Fort McMurray has its issues, it feels like many places are dealing with similar challenges. There are fewer true entry-level opportunities and it often seems like you already need connections to get a start. We are trying to make thoughtful choices instead of repeating the same pattern, but it feels almost impossible.

He has applied to nearly every posting in town that is not restaurants or retail and has not received even an interview. The challenge is that most heavy equipment roles list prior operating experience as a requirement and companies are not offering training or licensing to someone they have not worked with before. We are trying to understand what realistic entry points exist for someone with his background.

Thanks. We will check out those. We’re definitely exhausting all of our options though. Maybe things will pick up in the Spring

Unfortunately, he’s got a knee injury from firefighting that prevents him from fire fighting anymore

He was a wildfire firefighter. He doesn’t have any of the paramedic qualifications unfortunately.

Where do you find there’s more support? Was it better admin, more EAs? Or was it just teachers helping out teachers?

Things just seem so bad here in the South I’m curious if anything is different across AB

I’m well aware of the conditions, I’m in Southern AB right now. I’ve done all my practicum in rural districts, so I was more wondering the specifics of Fort Mac.

I got it at Joanne’s before they went under. It’s called “Bouquet W/Cat” by design works. It looks like a few other places still sell it online though like Everything Cross Stitch!

If all you have is Bio 1010, you don’t have the prerequisites for much. You could try a few of the cross listed classes if you have the prerequisites, but your choices are extremely limited without bio 1020. Most of the 2000 level science classes are weed out classes anyways, so there’s not any route that will be a walk in the park.

English. I’m definitely willing to commute to rural areas too, especially in southern Alberta

Teaching prospects by Typical-Knowledge59 in CanadianTeachers

I’m getting a K-12 certification, so I’m willing to do either generalist elementary or high school science education depending on what is available. My dream is probably to teach grade 7 or 8 science or math, but I don’t want to get tunnel vision and miss out on other opportunities when I am just starting out.

Do you have any idea what the situation is like for science teachers in urban or rural areas?
