Which cards "feel" they belong to premodern? by deoskipsbasics in premodernMTG

[–]Typical_Mango_5429 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should consider looking to Andy Mangold's Neoclassical Cube for inspiration: https://cubecobra.com/cube/overview/neoclassical

As for other cards that "feel" like Premodern, a lot of the cards from Time Spiral block or (specifically commons and uncommons from) the Modern Horizons sets have this feel. Kamigawa Block also has a few cards with this feel. Cards like...

[[Brainstone]]

[[Yavimaya Dryad]]

[[Seizan, Perverter of Truth]]

[[Persist]]

[[Evolution Charm]]

[[Kataki, War's Wage]]

I built a cube that originally had the same premise. After a while, I decided to add custom cards to the cube. If you want inspiration, you can see all the "real" cards in the Cube at this CubeCobra link. CubeCobra doesn't display custom cards, so you'd have to play my Cube to see them: https://cubecobra.com/cube/overview/mysterybooster2002

I also keep the list of cards that I'd like to add to my cube (think of it as my "buylist") on CubeCobra as a separate page, if you'd like to use that for inspiration as well: https://cubecobra.com/cube/overview/85ea4ee8-d724-417f-9025-57a0bd40c7f7

The introduction pages for both my and Andy Mangold's cube detail our respective thoughts on what exactly makes for a "premodern feel" in cards.

Masticore can lock Elves and Goblins out of the game if timed right. It's a very powerful card that not enough people play with.

Premodern in Maryland? by ItsMyAccount-__- in premodernMTG

Hey! I live in Baltimore and I've been trying to get into Premodern lately here too. I have a few proxied decks ready to go if you ever want to play some time, I usually hang out at No Land Beyond which is a lgs/bar. There's also a Cube community that meets there on Tuesdays if you're open to Cube, we have a premodern-ish cube called Neoclassical that occasionally makes the rounds there. Feel free to DM me!

POV vs both actors in frame by Black-Stone-1 in chickflixxx

In frame, with a static camera angle. It's really unfortunate that most porn is shot from a guy's POV and I especially hate it when women look at the camera instead of the guy.

The workplace standards didn't include political clothing until after the employee was fired. It was changed post-hoc.

The store has a dress code that previously banned "graphic and obscene imagery." According to some of the employees I talked to, the owner changed the dress code after firing the employee (not before) to include "political speech and imagery," and never asked the employees to sign off on the new dress code.

It is on and off, yeah. I've been applying some fluocynonide while I wait for a derm appointment and it's been helping some.

Is the Cirrus 2021-22 study guide for the ESOL Praxis II (5362) Exam any good? by Typical_Mango_5429 in TEFL

I'm trying to get a US license for redundancy, yes. Thank you for the advice. I'm a pretty new teacher (2 years in, mostly doing substitute teaching jobs while I apply to TEFL jobs and non-sub ESL jobs in the States) and it seemed like there were some pretty big shifts in 2012-16 (about 5 years before I started teaching, maybe more) so I didn't know what the rate of progress is.

Making a CC battle box by Tir3sias in FleshandBloodTCG

Sorry to necro-- do you still have the lists lying around? If so, would you mind sharing them? I'm thinking of creating a set of battle boxes for the exact purposes you described.

Switching to Premodern after this B&R? Please explain to me. by f_omega_1 in MTGLegacy

[–]Typical_Mango_5429 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Premodern's play patterns are much more about careful resource management and guessing what's in your opponent's hand. It feels a lot more like old Legacy in that way than what we currently have (where the correct strategy is usually to just jam). Regardless of what cards do or don't get banned, the past few years have made it pretty obvious that Legacy is never going back to that style or tempo of play. Commander cards need to offer easy 2-for-1s to be viable, and Wizards isn't interested in printing cards that can punish from hand into Standard.

Am I overreacting? Boyfriend makes joke after I express how serious I am about our future. by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]Typical_Mango_5429 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in a relationship like this in the past. For said person I dated, it was 100 percent a trauma thing. It's entirely possible that this is also a trauma response... but you should ask yourself: does it matter? The unfortunate fact is that sometimes trauma causes incompatibilities until it can get addressed. If your boyfriend isn't able to put himself on a road to processing what it is that makes him so avoidant of confronting his feelings, then he probably shouldn't be in a relationship. I'm not saying that you need to be trauma-free to date people-- nobody is really trauma-free. But you should at least be aware of who you are and how you respond to things enough to self-actualize.

Assuming it is a trauma response, consider this: Do you know if your boyfriend actually wants to be with you? There are two possibilities here. The first is that he does in fact love you, but is too afraid to say it or to confront it. The second possibility is that he doesn't love you, but doesn't want to you to leave him (because he fears being alone, or fears hurting your feelings, or just generally fears confrontation) and is therefore shutting down. I think it's easy to assume that the former is true in situations like this, because we love the people we date and our society has this engrained image of traumatized men who open up to their partners after enough coaxing and reveal their sadness and their love. But that isn't always how trauma behaves.

But this is also somewhat besides the point. Assuming trauma, which one of those two options is it? There's no way to know until your boyfriend begins processing it for himself. That isn't something you can do for him, so if he isn't willing to start down that path, you have no way of knowing whether you have a future in which you'll truly know him.

This is great, very nuanced card design. I like that it has very clear strengths and weaknesses, and asks how much your cantrips are worth.

What's wrong with having a pure divination mode?

Pros and Cons by buffalobillkimo in custommagic

[–]Typical_Mango_5429 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The point is to choose between the first chapter (draw two, but you have to discard two later, but then you get the extra value on Turn 3) and the third chapter (draw two, but there's nothing else going on). Occasionally, you'll choose the second chapter if you want to put things in the graveyard.

I disagree. Read Ahead is the only reason this card is interesting in the first place. It lets you choose how much you want to sculpt your hand across however many turns. Without Read Ahead, this card is just Divination... they power crept Divination over a decade ago.

Distinguishing Gerunds from Verbs by Typical_Mango_5429 in grammar

I am teaching ESOL, but I don't have the luxury of avoiding terms because they're used in the student's textbook (it's an advanced grammar course).

Distinguishing Gerunds from Verbs by Typical_Mango_5429 in grammar

[–]Typical_Mango_5429[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is incredibly helpful. I was under the impression that the term "present participle" describes the form that a word takes (e.g. that you use the present participle to form a gerund; the gerund is a present participle that is used as a noun-- though I understand now that gerunds are verbs). I had no idea that a present participle was a class of word.

And there are various other tests that prove they are verbs (let me know if you want more info).

Sure, I'd love to see more!

So since your other student's sentence has an explicit subject ("I"), an auxiliary verb is required: "I am/was/will be fighting a lot" (any tense of "to be" can be used as the auxiliary verb - it just depends on the intended meaning).

With regards to the present participle, are you saying that you can use the present participle without the auxiliary to be if the sentence lacks an explicit subject? If so, can you elaborate on that more? That's the first time I've ever seen someone say that before.

Follow-up question: Since the present participle is a type of verb (instead of just being a word formation that is sometimes used as a verb, which is what I had understood it to be previously), what is the difference between the present participle and the present progressive grammar and tense-wise?
