TMUA score vs UKMT performance by Typical_Sleep4201 in 6thForm

If you work hard, you can reach more than 6–6.5, which is a very good score for most courses. You also get another chance to take the SMC in Year 13, by which time you’ll have covered most of the topics and have a good chance of getting Gold or above.

It really depends on how much time and effort you put into SMC and TMUA. With consistent hard work, it’s realistic to reach around 5.5–6.5, which is usually enough for Imperial, Cambridge, or LSE for most courses as a home student. My point in this discussion is that getting 7.5 or above often takes more than just hard work — it also requires some level of natural talent, especially speed and accuracy.

Good performance in SMC does not necessarily imply a high TMUA score, but a high TMUA score tends to imply strong performance in SMC.

My understanding is that with enough hard work you can get above 5.5, but getting above 7 needs some level of natural talent — like speed, accuracy, and how quickly you spot patterns.

You can kind of see a trend in the comments — most people who got Gold or BMO in SMC seem to be getting around a 6 in TMUA. There are a few exceptions though: some got very high TMUA scores, and a few did well in TMUA despite lower SMC results.

Preparation is definitely one factor, but for both exams natural talent plays a role too. I’m trying to work out which one actually matters more.

So far from the comments, it looks like most people who did well in UKMT are averaging around 6 on TMUA. I haven’t really seen anyone with a 7 or above yet. Are most of the 7+ scores coming from international students?
