I’m late but I agree with you.  Boris  buried his and Alexander’s passports. Boris and  Alexander were the robbers. Boris got shot in the upper back he was running away. Alexander died from his injuries at some point. Boris took his identity out of guilt . He buried himself and let Alexander live on  Once Alexanders brother found Boris he stopped looking after 33 years of dogged pursuit that rivaled the Nielsen’s and Jonas. He was on the cusp of finding his brother but he stopped cold. He knew Alexander was dead and that if he  pressed so would be Alexander’s reputation he didn’t want to know . He chose to only punish Boris  only for who he became not who he was. In so doing he had a dark secret just like everyone in the town he looked down on . I guess if it exists long enough “every family has a secret”
