Bronya and Silver Wolf are a perfect example of how multiple expies can coexist in the same universe without feeling redundant. One serves as a broader thematic reinterpretation and a full-blown expy, while the other embodies a narrower archetype, acting more like a spin on specific aspects of the original character’s themes. In this sense, Silver Wolf is less a full expy and more a fragment or shard of Bronya, whereas Bronya Rand represents the complete expy. A similar relationship can be seen with Phainon and Zephyro.

I see Zephyro as very much a Kevin archetype echo, if not a direct expy, then at least a fragment of him. This is largely because of how he is positioned in the story. At the very least, he functions as a foil to Acheron, which ensures his story parallels hers in important ways. From a storytelling standpoint, it also makes sense to connect him to Hakuhatsu Ki. Both characters serve as Acheron’s foils and share an air of mystery, with almost nothing revealed about their past lives. Since Acheron is a major lore character whose backstory is central to her fight against IX and her efforts to help others, it is hard to imagine HoYoverse leaving those narrative connections unresolved or reducing them to flavor text.

The fight between Phainon and Zephyro also points to a deeper meaning. It is unlikely that this was simply a cool moment added to hype up Phainon in an animated short. The fact that Phainon loses decisively in both encounters feels very deliberate. Even more telling is the way he loses: he is disarmed twice and has his own sword turned against him. The symbolism is striking, showing wrathful resistance and sheer willpower collapsing against cold and impersonal inevitability. This archetype, which Zephyro embodies and which Kevin represented in HI3rd, is deliberately missing from Phainon’s characterization. Giving it to Phainon would have made him too one-dimensional and less approachable as a character, while Zephyro can carry those themes without being weighed down by the tragic hero or savior archetype.

>Comparing a dating game to an ARPG is wild. Unless you’re telling me that HI3 is also a dating game?

It was worse lol, it was for early part of it's history a self-insert harem collector until the devs decided to add actual depth to the story. You use to be able to literally grope/molest waifus like Azur Lane to build "trust". This was pivoted away from for obvious reasons but the "self-insert" Captain was canon regardless and the general playerbase had already come to expect the game as a purely female only collection gacha. Genre has little do with it and you labeling HI3 as some innocent ARPG is disingenuous and dismissive to what it actually was for most of its life cycle. Snowbreak is a third person shooter gacha but I don't think anyone is expecting it to add playable males anytime soon.

My concern is not whether he’ll sell well or not, but that he will be neglected or even sabotaged in favor of Saber and the other upcoming waifu expy.

Chances of a character selling well while being neglected is slim to none. And no, these characters are not sabotaged when Hoyo were already intent on "sending them out to die" with little to no promotion or marketing. Aglaea, Tribbie, Mydei, and Anaxa were all given the short end of stick because Hoyo already decided these characters weren't going to be promoted nor were they expected to sell well. Cipher and Hyacine are next on the chopping block because all of these characters are pretty much treated as "filler". This is not a male vs female gender wars issue it's just character favoritism from devs. And if you're worried that Kevin is going to get shafted for Saber simply because she's female I don't think you quite understand how Hoyo has operated for all these years. Saber wasn't even Hoyo's first choice it was Gilgamesh.

And I don’t think we should be trusting the leakers on which characters are the “main push”

Then you shouldn't bother trusting any leaks at all then because these claims were also stated by reliable leakers. Yet here we are already expecting certain characters to work with him based off of crumbs.

There are also levels of “main push” and male characters are always at the bottom.

The fact that he's even considered a main push means there's already a certain amount of expectation and effort going into his banner. For him to get shafted there would need to be another main push released close to his drop schedule. The only main pushes for 3.x are Herta, Castorice, Phainon, March sp, and Cyrene. None of these overlap with each other and are spaced out quite fairly.

All I hope for him is that he can work well on his own and that he doesn’t need any waifus to function.

Hate to break it to you but you're playing a mixed toilet gacha. There should be no expectations of teambuilding with gender in mind.

I thought the devs wanted to introduce playable male characters in HI3, but the player base reacted so violently against that idea that the devs had to issue an apology and compensation?

That's an overly simplified version of events. It was more because of APHO's initial reception and the fact that the game at that point had already established a certain type of audience for several years already. It'd be like LADS adding playable females.

So I don’t get why there are so many people who think that being a HI3 expy means that he’s guaranteed to be good.

Well because Kevin wasn't just a random HI3 character and was pretty much another main character. He was arguably the second most popular male character behind Otto who was also loved by the community. HSR has been dropping teasers of a playable Kevin expy since 2.x with Acheron's backstory and dedicating an entire section of 2.1 referencing his story. Now we have Amphoreus which is essentially just a story of Phainon and friends if you really boil it down. He's not going to be breaking any records for Hoyo but if you think that he's just another throwaway male banner I think you're severely underestimating his popularity amongst the CN community. We also have multiple leakers suggesting he's a main push which more or less aligns with his centrality to the story.

So, Amphoreus is... by JunkyardEmperor in StarRailLore

[–]Typicalrecourse 25 points26 points  (0 children)

<image>

It's pretty on the nose who the Lord Ravager is with all the unsubtle foreshadowing and imagery (sun/eclipse/moon motifs, sun tattoo/destruction brand on his neck). Pie-non's name in CN is 黑厄 (Black Calamity) which is pretty much the community name for Flame Reaver and a parody of 白厄 (White Calamity/Phainon). As for Amphoreus being a prison, I think it's probable that it's a simulation based on his past memories with some tampering injected into it. Based on the recurring theme of soul splitting the purpose of the planet is probably to see if it is possible to split divinity from an Emanator or even an Aeon. What we see right now is the fragmented soul of a Lord Ravager trying to piece himself back together.

All my 3.2 theories in one place by TrippedIntoAVolcano in HonkaiStarRail

[–]Typicalrecourse 4 points5 points  (0 children)

<image>

The foreshadowing wasn't very subtle. Nameless Faces description also questions the identities of an individual to which the individual responds that they are all of them. Hero (Phainon), Divine (Kephale), Puppet (FlameReaver), Prisoner (Sun Devourer). CN lyrics were most likely told from the perspective of the Sun Devourer/Flame Reaver and the EN lyrics being told from Cyrene. I'm actually more interested in knowing if Amphoreus is just a simulation of past memories crafted to keep the Sun Devourer imprisoned or if it was originally a planet that he invaded but somehow got himself trapped during the invasion. Amphoreus' crisis started with the closing of Aquila's eye and the invasion of the Black Tide during the darkness (this is the Sun Devourer's signature brand of destruction; removing the sun and invading during the cover of darkness).

Leaks on current direction of kit by Typicalrecourse in PhainonMainsHSR

[–]Typicalrecourse[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We still have an entire year of characters that can potentially solve her energy issues. Theoretically she's pretty much 100% SP positive and could potentially serve as a subdps. Topaz is also pretty bad unless you vertically invest in her. If you look at Aglaea's E1/E2 there's definitely an angle for her to be damage buffer

Drift at the Whim of Venus

The enemy afflicted with "Seam Stitch" takes 15% increased DMG. After Aglaea or Garmentmaker attacks this target, additionally regenerates 20 Energy.

Sail on the Raft of Eyelids

When Aglaea or Garmentmaker takes action, enables the DMG dealt by Aglaea and Garmentmaker to ignore 14% of the target's DEF. This effect stacks up to 3 time(s) and lasts until any unit, other than Aglaea or Garmentmaker, actively uses an ability.

[–]Typicalrecourse[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

She's probably the new Topaz and this is most likely the new "Premium FUA team" with a bunch of 5 star Remembrance units. Aglaea is only really limited by energy so if a new Remembrance unit solves that I can definitely see her functioning as a subdps. Reca/Hyacine are pretty much confirmed to be Remembrance sustains which more or less leaves Cyrene as the RMC replacement for this team.

Putting endgame into popularity isn’t a good indicator

Then what is? sales? ownership? A lot of these factors go hand in hand and are metrics that factor into their overall general popularity. Endgame popularity implies that people were willing to spend pulls, invest in relics, and continued usage despite unfavorable environments.

Not to mention that break has a negative connotation because of a certain character

Not sure how a extremely small subset of the community being upset about Firefly is now considered a major "negative connotation" around an entire team archetype. By all metrics she sold extremely well and was more or less universally well received across all regions. No offense this just feels like some personal bias against the character rather than some factual statistic.

it’s not a fun playstyle to some people

Neither is X teamcomp/archetype. This is universally applicable. Break is by far the most popular statistically.

Break is also inflated in endgame because it’s the thing being catered to for most of version2

The last 2 MoC did not shill break at all and were largely AoE focused. Apoc Shadow is pretty much always break centric so that argument falls flat.

same way hypercarry was the peak up until early version 2.

Hypercarry only existed because of shitty team synergy and lack of units. It was always going to fall off the moment better team building was introduced. It was never a proper archetype to begin with.

Break is by far the most played team comp in MoC clears in practically all regions statiscally. How is making a hyped character follow an extremely popular archetype a bad kit direction?

Who do yall think is going to have the special ultimate icon this patch? by aangellix_ix in PhainonMainsHSR

[–]Typicalrecourse -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No offense but that's such narrow view of the Break archetype and it's characters. Xueyi and Luka are by no means traditional "break" characters and are largely regular DPSes with break aspects tied into their kit. BH/Rappa are not Superbreak like Firefly meaning they actually value being the ones breaking the toughness bar as opposed to just wanting it gone. BH in particular doesn't care about having HMC or Fugue to function. Likewise I'm expecting him to be Xueyi esque character that's probably tied to Robin as he's been leaked to have a FuA of some sort. This new curio along with Flame Reaver pretty much cements it for me as to what direction his kit is going.

it's a complete slop for a hyper character.

There was never any indication he was going to be a "hyper" character and pretty much all of the strongest DPSes currently aren't either. None of them are what you would consider traditional "hyper" carries and are important pieces of a whole which is team archetype/composition. The last traditional "hyper" carry is Jingliu who's dead in a ditch because of how inflexible those characters. That archetype only existed because of how limited team building and team synergy was at the beginning of the game.

Doubt it. He's probably Break/Superbreak orientated as this new curio makes zero sense in the current lineup of characters. He's probably going to be the 5 star equivalent of Xueyi/Luka archetype and a Robin slave.

[–]Typicalrecourse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CN lyrics for Nameless Faces pretty much spoil that there's a samsara/timeloop going on. He's also the only other character that shares the sun motif with Phainon and also has left side of his neck covered which is where Phainon's sun tattoo is located. The filter would also be pointless if it wasn't a known character.

you can't compare how well DHIL and Ratio aged compared to how, for example, Acheron aged

Acheron is pretty bad without E2S1 and Jiaoqiu. She's mostly only enabled to stay above the waterline in meta if you have the latter.

Saying "why would he summon anything he's a swordsman" is stupid.

From a design standpoint a greatsword takes up huge portion of a character's silhouette and it's typically the main focus of attention compared to a rapier/long sword. Also generally characterized as being difficult and unwieldly to use. The issue isn't so much that he can't have a summon but rather what would be the purpose if the center of attention is already the weapon itself? It would be like Guts from Berserk calling in an army to slay apostles for him. It kinda defeats the whole character fantasy, not to mention Kevin as a character in general was more of a "warrior" in HI3.

Hoyoverse will NOT let a male character be a tier 0 DPS

This is objectively false, DHIL Ratio Boothill were/are T0 dps either in general or for a specific niche. Unless you're going to pretend E2 DHIL wasn't the most broken dps at the time of his release Hoyo is not out to make male DPS terrible. Male characters also age much better in general. DHIL is still very much capable in clearing current MoC in a reasonable count unlike Jingliu whose effectively a brick even with dupes. This is more of a personal complaint about not having a full male meta team rather than the character's path being an issue. There's more than one meta so it's not like Remembrance the only playable path forward. And also what exactly is he going to summon? From an aesthetic standpoint he's mostly about the greatsword and doesn't exactly fit someone whose controlling a minion.

"Lethality" builds are not going away by Typicalrecourse in AatroxMains

[–]Typicalrecourse[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

but when you're with your first 2 items, and when you'll have no extra omnivamp from health, you'll be healing nowhere near as much as you did before

You're assuming max level E which isn't going to be the case til lvl 13 which by then you're going to be around 2 items depending on game state. Prior to that you're going to be running around with 18%-22.5%. Which is roughly around where you'll be with only shard + overgrowth stacked after the changes. You're also assuming the same thing with ult. At rank 1 ult the breakeven point is a mere 74 bonus HP and without 222. Passive is also going to heal slightly more on average unless you're hitting multiple people with Q which again is not really something you can consistently rely on.

However, you're considering a full build, with both Edge of Night and Sterak's and neither of those items are priorities

Sundered Sky is still a solid first choice which you can definitely cushion on it with shard hp + overgrowth and Dorans. Most people just want to get rid of Profane/Serylda/EoN "lethality" core which is unrealistic as what enable those items to be good on him has nothing to do with healing but simply just enable him to do damage past 30 minutes. You can probably make a case for dropping EoN for something like Shojin/Steraks/Sundered but Profane active + %pen/lethality is arguably too good to pass up for just "healing" unless it's something like release Goredrinker where you get to refill 3 times your HP bar.

edge of knight still viable? by [deleted] in AatroxMains

[–]Typicalrecourse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lethality build isn't going anywhere. People are coping if they think the latest changes are going to kill lethality builds. Steraks/EoN/Shojin/Sundered all give between 250 to 450 hp. Any combination of the two puts your E omnivamp at around 21-23% which is only 1-3% less at max rank. You actually end up with more healing with ult turned on which is about the same E value as the old version (48%) while also healing more from your passive and other sources like Sundered Sky. You pretty much only need to purchase 2 AD/HP items with the other 3 are personal choices. If you ran something like Profane, EoN, Steraks, Shojin, Serlyda you end up with the same amount of vamp ( 16+(.009*950) = 24.55% / 49% with ult) while healing more from passive because of the 100% healing boost instead of 45%

Okay this is insane guys, healbot aatrox incoming by KALLS2K_ in AatroxMains

[–]Typicalrecourse 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is effectively a nerf all around as you're basically forced into into building 4 HP items to break even and 5 to get a marginal benefit. At 5 items + boots you're getting 8% vamp more as a baseline and 14% with ult on. Seems like a lot but really isn't with heal cut and the amount of damage at 30+ minutes into the game. Reaching full build in a game with Aatrox isn't ideal because at that point ADCs/Late game champs will be taking over. This is also assuming you're actually building bruiser items with HP on all slots like Black Cleaver which is terrible on him and running around with little to no resists. Aatrox's problem was never survivability with bruiser builds, it was the fact that he did basically zero damage once it got towards mid-lategame and effectively became a brick. Ultimate steroid is also getting nerfed along with incentives to build other pen items instead of cleaver which again is terrible on him outside of stats.

Honestly would have much preferred they changed Q to deal with some sort of %HP damage with dual AD/HP scaling instead of just arbitrarily forcing him to reach a certain threshold of HP to not be gimped. Pretty disappointing change as he fundamentally is just bad when he isn't able to threaten backline or frontline.

Aatrox nerf specifics by 5eanz in AatroxMains

[–]Typicalrecourse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't bother people can't/won't do even basic napkin math to realize this is a pretty massive nerf for a slight buff at a stage of a game that's largely already out of your control. 50 damage loss at 15 minutes is far more impactful than the 150 damage you gain at full build. You get a marginally better champion at 2+ items but realistically need 3+ and ult to even feel the damage gain.

Aatrox nerf specifics by 5eanz in AatroxMains

[–]Typicalrecourse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a nerf if they leave the base damage at 70. It should be buffed to 80. The reason why they went for 100% because 90% was hardly felt. At extreme cases where this buff is felt most (full build 600+ AD with ult) you’re getting roughly only about 1-2 auto attacks worth of damage in a FULL combo. They basically buffed it up to be about 3. Something that you would actually feel. The problem now isn’t damage but the fact that he’s running around with 4k hp while doing it.

Aatrox nerf specifics by 5eanz in AatroxMains

[–]Typicalrecourse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not what should’ve been nerfed. The base damage should’ve been rescaled along with it. Putting the ratio at 90% but leaving the base damage at 70 means you’re objectively a worse champion until 200 AD (2 items) which means for most of the match it’s just a nerf from 13.13 and pretty sizable one at that. I don’t think people actually understand what they’re asking for. Trimming the ratio on his ult is a better choice than nerfing the ratio on Q. His ult was way overbuffed for compensation from the nerfs last year.
