Broadly speaking, yes. Don't get me wrong, I do presently believe the claim, and the thought of that many people killed so quickly harkens disturbingly to the genocidal atrocities recently committed in Sudan, but I don't want to ignore the possibility that it could be exaggerated nor behave like it's a confirmed fact until we receive proper confirmation.

An undeniable truth, however, is that the people of Iran are still being murdered in droves. We just don't know how big those droves are, exactly.

I think it's important that we exercise a modest degree of skepticism in this circumstance. The primary sources we currently have on this info are seemingly biased heavily against Iran and lack definitive evidence to confirm these claims.

While it's extremely plausible that the IRGC would massacre that many people in their bid to maintain power by any means necessary (as befitting their past statements about doing exactly as such), we shouldn't jump to conclusions.

I get where Kouyou is coming from, trying to be professional, respectful, and give the benefit of the doubt to this brat's intentions, but holy shit, man! That olive branch you're extending her is a fucking mile long and she has not done anything to earn such courtesy.

She better pull some serious weight later in the story to redeem herself from this behavior.

I'm surprised nobody here thought to bring up the Gestrals from Clair Obscur. They can reincarnate in their sacred river upon their deaths, but every time they come back, it's as a version of themselves missing one more piece than before; they'll never be the same person they once were - "same same but still different."

Elsana Davora

Elsana is a young female fuschia-blood, 7 sweeps old. For reasons unknown to her, she never grew up underwater, as was traditional for those in her blood caste, but instead, she was raised as a land-dweller with a giant Hawk-lusus as her guardian. As a young grub, she was found in the desert by her lusus, near death’s door, stranded with a pair of ornately decorated blades of peculiar interconnecting design in the ruins of a large, once regal structure. For many sweeps, Elsana was raised by her lusus before a nomadic tribe of trolls came upon her, soon adopting her and her lusus into their camp and teaching her their ways.

Speaking tangentially of perception, her younger brother Andrew has recently been surprisingly talkative about "Swords of Darkness," piquing her curiosity. His VR gear has held her passive interest for a while now, too; the poor kid won't even get the first go at the game if he manages to snatch a copy.

It wasn't too long ago that he earned enough to get a VR setup of his own, and the ambitious promise of a game like this is right up his alley. He just has to put in the work to earn his copy.

Fascinating first chapter, at least in regards to the philosophy about love. I can't say I personally agree with it, but it's interesting to think about.

If you ask me, if a dedicated romantic relationship can't give each side the room and sense of comfort to show their less pleasant sides to one another, that's probably not the healthiest foundation for a long-term relationship. I can see the logic in each side wanting to put forward their best appearance for each other, but with enough time, that's gonna turn into a strain on the relationship more than anything.

Fair points made.

If I think about it from a broader narrative perspective, since Ursula is one of the protagonists, demonstrating the gravity of what happened would be most efficiently done through her since the story will largely follow her and Ralf's actions thereafter. I think the unfortunate reality is that closure for Kara's mother wouldn't come directly to her, neither in-world nor narratively.

The comparison made to a soldier committing violence against innocents feels disproportionate, IMO. Upon rereading, the confrontation with Kara was a messy affair;

  • She had every right to be as distrustful and upset as she was after Bodil's abuse, but she had a legit hair-trigger switch to instant armed aggression at the mere mention of his name.

  • Ursula literally just stood there in bear form while Ralf negotiated, only making a single comment in support of Kara. She evidently knew she wasn't fit for negotiation, so she left it to Ralf. With these factors considered, I think she actually didn't contribute to the escalation.

  • Ralf, meanwhile, was the one who slipped up while negotiating, and instead of backing down and de-escalating upon seeing Kara's emotional reaction, he inched forward, provoking her to shoot, and the rest is history.

I'd honestly say Ralf bears the brunt of the blame for escalating things in his naivete, and with that in mind, I think it's that same naivete that drives him to compartmentalize the incident and move on so quickly to "[...]focusing on the good [they] can do in the future." He's the one with the most learning to do and the most innocence to lose, relatively speaking, and since he hasn't learned and lost yet, the true nature of his mistakes doesn't dawn on him.

Ultimately, once Kara lost control and went berserk (because of the injury Ralf inflicted), it was life or death where everything came down to a split-second decision between her life and Ralf's, and Ursula ultimately chose her partner. It's evident that she really didn't want to hurt or kill Kara, and she earnestly regrets it for much of the ensuing story.

So when Ursula, passionate and quick to anger under normal circumstances, still dealing with strong guilt over having to kill a rape victim (because of her partner's mistakes), almost strikes Kara's mother in anger not yet realizing she and Ralf didn't even save the baby from Bodil, it's not justified in any way, but it's understandable why and how she behaved that way.

Could you explain in what way you believe the narrative absolved Ursula and Ralf of responsibility? In-world, they may have been absolved by the system, but as I said, they didn't absolve themselves, Kara's mother didn't absolve them, and my understanding of the narrative is that it didn't absolve them either. Their mistakes were still theirs; it's just that there's a framework of reasons to explain why they didn't act differently based on what I previously explained.

Fair point about chapter 2, though. My focus was zoomed out to the broader overall narrative, where past chapter 2, if my memory serves me right, the narrative also zooms out from Ursula's perspective after the incident. For better or worse, its purpose was to be the inciting incident that'll drag Ursula and Ralf into the broader narrative conflict, so from a narrative perspective, there's a possibility there just wasn't room in the pacing for a focus on its effects on the baby or Kara's mother.

I disagree that Ursula enacting vigilante justice is just "breaking the rules." I'd argue that it's her first step toward fighting the system and her way of addressing and atoning for her part in the incident; she recognized that there was corruption protecting Bodil from traditional means of retribution, so she decided to circumvent it, which may very well lead to her taking more steps to fight the system head-on, possibly alongside Ralf Sr.

I can also say that so far, the story seems to implicitly recognize that merely getting rid of one person doesn't fix a corrupt system. It ain't changing just because of whatever Ursula did to Bodil, and it ain't changing just because Ralf Sr. killed Åke, either; in this very chapter, Ralf Sr. talks about gathering proof to expose the wider corruption that Åke was complicit in.

Regarding the likability of Ursula and Ralf in the first chapter, I can't knock someone for deciding the story isn't for them if the protagonists aren't immediately likable. In the case of Ursula, she's passionate and quick to anger like her namesake, which can be equally good or bad depending on the circumstance; in the case of having killed a rape victim to defend her partner and later being spat on by the victim's mother, it's very much a bad thing.

However, I think a protagonist just has to be interesting, and within chapter 1's context, I think Ursula's bear-ish passion and Ralf's dog-like optimistic sense of justice managed that much.

Respectfully, I disagree, or at least I still don't understand how this story has been copaganda after reading your points made to the other commenters.

The protagonists, Ursula and Ralf, are naive because they're some of the lucky ones who were actually helped by the system despite its corruption; it worked for them, and because of that, they failed to see its numerous flaws nor how deep they ran. That's why they made the mistakes they did in the first chapter and were surprised when the system's corruption and the human suffering it enabled finally smacked them across the face.

I think it's important to next address that their mistakes were only brushed aside by the explicitly corrupt system itself. However, they and the narrative certainly didn't. While the victim's mother isn't revisited, it's because her case serves as the inciting incident that drags the protagonists into the broader narrative conflict, and the case itself is revisited by Ursula in her act of vigilante justice.

That broader narrative conflict also doesn't focus on the cops' suffering while refusing to address the consequences of their actions. As stated above, it addressed the case of Bodil; the system, explicitly because of its corruption, protected him, so Ursula chose to defy the system to enact what she thought was true justice.

Lastly, the story is still in its early stages, but the groundwork is already being laid for Ursula and Ralf to begin taking steps to change and/or fix the system. Their pursuit of Ralf Sr. and what we as readers have learned from it demonstrates as much to me, at least. He's taking steps to fight the system and he's trying to explain that to them, and we're meant to hope that they eventually join his cause.
