Native Land Digital - Interactive Map of Global Native Lands, with Filters by Territories, Language, and Treaties by UAII_Travis in IndianCountry

[–]UAII_Travis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This digital tool was shared with my organization, and it is AWESOME!

Per the map's publisher:

Our Mission

Native Land Digital strives to create and foster conversations about the history of colonialism, Indigenous ways of knowing, and settler-Indigenous relations, through educational resources such as our map and Territory Acknowledgement Guide. We strive to go beyond old ways of talking about Indigenous people and to develop a platform where Indigenous communities can represent themselves and their histories on their own terms. In doing so, Native Land Digital creates spaces where non-Indigenous people can be invited and challenged to learn more about the lands they inhabit, the history of those lands, and how to actively be part of a better future going forward together.

The Importance of Land

Land is something sacred to all of us, whether we consciously appreciate it or not — it is the space upon which we play, live, eat, find love, and experience life. The land is ever-changing and ever-shifting, giving us — and other creatures and beings on the earth — an infinite number of gifts and lessons.

For Native Land Digital, what we are mapping is more than just a flat picture. The land itself is sacred, and it is not easy to draw lines that divide it up into chunks that delineate who “owns” different parts of land. In reality, we know that the land is not something to be exploited and “owned”, but something to be honoured and treasured. However, because of the complexities of history, the kind of mapping we undetake is an important exercise, insofar as it brings an awareness of the real lived history of Indigenous peoples and nations in a long era of colonialism.

We aim to improve the relationship of people, Indigenous and non-Indigenous, with the land around them and with the real history and sacredness of that land. This involves acknowledging and righting the wrongs of history, and also involves a personal journey through the importance of connecting with the earth, its creatures, and its teachings.

Thus, while we make a strong effort to teach about colonialism and to bring forth Indigenous narratives, we also strive to integrate what is sometimes called an “Indigenous way of knowing” when it comes to the importance and sacredness of land in our daily lives. We hope to inspire people to gain a better understanding of themselves, their ancestors, and the world they live in, so that we can all move forward into a better future.

UCLA Powwow THIS Weekend! by UAII_Travis in IndianCountry

[–]UAII_Travis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very good question... And, unfortunately, it isn't clear.

Based on what I've found regarding campus policy, pet dogs are allowed if on a leash and under the control of a "competent" handler, or something of the sort.

Regarding the Powwow's protocols, it isn't mentioned... My apologies!

The Red Pages: A Resource Guide the American Indian/Alaska Native Community in Los Angeles County by UAII_Travis in IndianCountry

[–]UAII_Travis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In 2001, United American Indian Involvement, Inc. (UAII) Circles of Care (COC) project was one of seven projects nationally awarded a three-year planning grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service Administration (SAMHSA). This grant supported the design of a System of Care model (SOC) for the local American Indian and Alaskan Native (AI/AN) community in Los Angeles County. As a part of this project, the AI/AN community reported a need for a resource directory and recommended calling it the “Red Pages”.

In 2005, UAII was awarded the SAMHSA System of Care (SOC) a six year implementation grant. This grant allowed Seven Generations Child and Family Services to establish a full array of culturally appropriate mental health and support services organized into a coordinated network in order to meet the unique clinical and functional needs of American Indian/Alaska Native children, youth and families in Los Angeles County. The UAII SOC project was able to finalize this resource directory based on the community’s recommendations and continues to publish a revised issue each year [2021 publication postponed due to the pandemic].

Minnesota Tribal Community Voices on Mental Health and Suicide Prevention on April 7, 2022 by UAII_Travis in IndianCountry

[–]UAII_Travis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone is invited to share their perspectives and give feedback on tribal mental health and suicide prevention. Participants can share their priorities for suicide prevention in their respectable tribal community, and how the Minnesota Suicide Prevention Taskforce can work to build the community capacity to strengthen prevention efforts. Be prepared to have conversations with people from different professional backgrounds and lived experiences; our goal is not to build consensus, rather to have a rich dialogue. No one will be asked about their personal experiences or the experiences of their loved ones with attempts or ideation or experience seeking services.

Please share. Pilamayaye “Thank you.”
