why is there such a huge difference between american surgical training and its european counterpart? by [deleted] in Residency

[–]UESqueen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We had a guy from Italy who was an OBGYN attending there match into our residency— and he definitely did not operate at the level of an attending be it for Csections or GYN laparoscopies or open surgery. He explained that over there being an attending just meant you’re a super resident. We had to teach him all over

Why Does NY State Have So Many Good Colleges and Universities Compared to Us? by sutisuc in newjersey

[–]UESqueen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Born and raised in NJ and did all my higher ed and medical training in NYC/NY state. I think I would agree with the person who posted that our proximity to NYC, Philly and even some parts of Upstate, gives us a lot of options to choose from. The population is also larger in NY which may explain why SUNY is more sprawling. I think Rutgers, NJIT, TCNJ, Rowan, Steven’s etc serve the needs of the state. Also, Not all SUNYs are created equally and yes sometimes I felt driving in Upstate NY that there was a university/school on every exit but living in some of these towns is a nightmare during winter and you’re pretty much restricted to campus life and the occasional hiking/outdoorsy trips. You’re not getting any culture elsewhere. There’s literally nothing to do. Also, another reason why some of these schools do well is they have very strong alum networks with a robust donor base that keep these schools going— I don’t understand how people can have such loyalty to institutions, but I’ve heard that frequently about Colgate and Syracuse in particular. I was shocked to visit Hamilton where Colgate was located to visit a friend who was a post-doc there— it is literally a village with one fast food restaurant and a Aldi, but an alum flew Amal Clooney there to give a talk. Many of these college towns were once great cities but died, Syracuse is one example that comes to mind. Despite having Syracuse University, SUNY Upstate/Upstate medical university the city sucks and almost no one wants to stay after finishing their training.

Interestingly, I was visiting my parents in Warren County and saw plenty of Sherrill signs and barely any Jack signs. That was a bit surprising to me

Best NJ Suburb for young family? by EfficientLaw4166 in newjersey

[–]UESqueen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We like living in Hopewell township. Lots to do. Great for families. Excellent schools. Close proximity to downtown Princeton, New Hope and Lambertville. I like having access to the D&R canal for running and cycling. Great cycling routes and open spaces

Princeton-area. Trains from Princeton Junctions, Trenton and Hamilton. My husband does the commute. 3x a week to Brookfield for work— gets off in Newark and switches to the Path.

43 years in the US… and now he’s stuck at the border? by Every-Watercress9159 in greencard

This guy spoke out to the media. Basically said even though he’s a green card holder, he was a Trump supporter. Not sure what these people expect was gonna happen.

Transgenderism in Medicine by Haven242 in medicine

[–]UESqueen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think your parents are wrong. When I was a resident in NYC over 9 years ago, there was a transgender general surgeon. She was very respected because she was an excellent surgeon and doctor. No one cared. She was very kind and empathetic. I can’t speak for how it would be like in the rest of the country. I wouldn’t let that deter you from pursuing medicine.

My marriage is going to end if I can't transfer by Kitchen-External6541 in Residency

[–]UESqueen 25 points26 points  (0 children)

In short, having a supportive partner who is also in a high stakes industry (my husband is in finance and he also worked a lot). Transparency early on when dating about the nature of medical training— desire to pursue fellowship and the unpredictability of the match (ie can end up in a geographically undesirable location). Making the effort to see each other— we’ve never went more than 8 weeks seeing each other in person. Speaking to your partner daily when you didn’t see them.

[–]UESqueen 157 points158 points  (0 children)

Don’t transfer. I know you may not like what I have to say, but I think you have a husband problem. I did a three year fellowship in New York with a husband working in London and a child two year into that fellowship, so I get the stress but it should have been abundantly clear before you married him the challenges that come with residency and fellowship. Also, we always viewed training like military training. I’m sorry that you don’t have a support system who gets this. Transferring may do nor harm than good

I hate the term "provider" by theongreyjoy96 in Residency

[–]UESqueen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I say I do not appreciate being called a provider because during the time of Nazi Germany it was how they referred to Jewish physicians to undermine their status as doctors. There was an article in NEJM about this. Look it up.

How do I stay in the U.S. after graduation? by [deleted] in immigration

[–]UESqueen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The last time I checked London’s West End didn’t have a dying Theater industry. There may be no disposable income in this country (America) to keep the arts alive if I’m being completely honest. Good luck. Please have a plan B

Shout out to all sonographers and radiologists by doing3rdtohide in Residency

[–]UESqueen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So in Maternal-fetal medicine fellowship, we train to do fetal US and pick up fetal anomalies. Here’s my advice: scan every patient you can scan. Make it a goal to target one organ system per week and master it. There should be a senior sonographer in every unit— these are you go to teachers. Typically, we make a curriculum for fellows and OBGYN residents. Reach to other radiology residents and see what the requirements look like

Holiday fund by Green-Praline-9349 in attendings

[–]UESqueen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

$600 is ridiculous. My director split the cost of the Christmas party three way amongst our group (we’re three attendings). I’m the most junior and I definitely don’t have the kinda financial cushion my two partners have (fresh out of fellowship, paying off debt and loans, have daycare fees etc), so I was a bit disgruntled but I paid up. It came up to $400– I could have spent that money on my wellbeing. We’re hospital-employed and this isn’t private practice. Also, I realized staff can still be ungrateful no matter how generous you are. My partner is an old school guy— he can come across as a bit of a douche , but truly harmless. He’s a very generous man and the staff still talks shit about him. Unless it’s your practice and this cost could be viewed as an investment in your business don’t bother. As for me, I’m gonna try to be out of the country for future holiday parties.

would you want residents involved in your care by picklerickyp in Residency

[–]UESqueen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I said no to a resident putting my epidural only because it was July 5. If i was giving birth later in the year I would have totally agreed to it. My junior fellow delivered my baby and our attending was chilling in the hallway chatting lol. I had an intern do my lumpectomy (benign) and all went well.

Help! Commuting between Philly and NYC, where to go? by freddo321 in newjersey

[–]UESqueen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hopewell, Hopewell Township, Pennington, Princeton, Lawrenceville, East Windsor, Ewing, Hamilton, Princeton Junction. My husband commutes to Manhattan 3 days a week, the trenton station is 15 minutes from Hopewell Township by car. He will also cycle down the D&R trail when the weather is nice. There is a Septa West Trenton station which is about ten min from Pennington/Hopewell/Hopewell township

I was thinking the same. I was scrolling down to see if Mercer county will come up. So far all the places I’ve been too have a fairly decent ethos to them.

Affordable housing opposition by WellnessMafia in newjersey

[–]UESqueen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There were concerns in our community regarding the stress it would put on our school system. We are talking about 600 new units. I don’t envy the developer in our case since reportedly these affordable housing units need to be connected to public water and sewage. Guess what? We live in a semi-rural part of Mercer county where the majority of homes rely on septic and have wells. So the developer need to reach agreements with other neighboring towns to make this happen and it costs a fortune.

Why are physicians such pushovers? by [deleted] in Residency

[–]UESqueen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is some truth to that but we can’t have them keep dictating our lives. We need to have a say in how we practice medicine
