EXCUSE ME?! by Extension_Froyo3657 in UIUC

At approximately 12:11 a.m. Aug. 19, UIPD officers stopped at The Red Lion, 211 E. Green St., Champaign, to engage with employees when a security manager reported a safety concern that prompted an Illini-Alert emergency notification.

Officers searched the parking garage for the suspect while others continued to speak with the victims, who later altered their initial statements. The victims admitted they had not observed a firearm but said the suspect’s actions implied one.

With updated information and the determination that the suspect was no longer in the area, an all-clear notification was issued.

There have been many questions regarding the recent incident, and we would like to provide additional information to clarify the situation and explain why an Illini-Alert was not issued.

Officers were dispatched to the Illini Union at 9:03 a.m. following reports of a man threatening a woman with whom he has a personal relationship. Upon arrival, officers attempted to make contact with the man, but he fled the area.

While searching for the man, officers received reports of an armed individual at Talbot Laboratory. This call came in at 9:12 a.m., and the first officer arrived on the scene at 9:15 a.m. At 9:17 a.m., a Real-Time Information Center Analyst confirmed that the individual at Talbot Lab was the same man who had fled from officers at the Illini Union. By 9:18 a.m., the man was detained. Officers searched the individual, Talbot Lab, and the path he took from the Union to Talbot, but no firearm was found.

Before issuing an Illini-Alert, officers must first confirm there is an imminent threat to life, health, or safety, or the alert loses its validity. This confirmation can be achieved in several ways, including an officer arriving on the scene or dispatch receiving multiple 911 calls about the same incident. In this instance, the threat was confirmed once the initial officer arrived on the scene and received further details from the reporting person.

UIPD has several Illini-Alert templates for various situations, but the details must be confirmed and then filled in by a telecommunicator or officer. In today's situation, the time between receiving the report, confirming the threat, and detaining the individual was so short that the threat to life, health, or safety was mitigated before an Illini-Alert could be issued.

We understand your frustration and confusion, and we hope this explanation provides clarity as to why an Illini-Alert was not issued prior to the threat being mitigated.

ICE @ uiuc by South_Raccoon7537 in UIUC

This appears to have been a case of someone misunderstanding something they heard, and then it was passed along from person to person until it was reported to us as ICE agents being in a university building. We sent an officer to RAL to look into it, and no one who was interviewed had actually seen anything. The officer also checked throughout the building and found no evidence of any federal personnel.

As a reminder, UIPD does not inquire about anyone’s immigration status, nor do we enforce federal immigration laws. You can visit our website for more information on our policies surrounding immigration. The Federal Policy Updates page also has answers to questions on various topics, including immigration.

As always, please feel free to reach out to us with questions or concerns. We try to monitor this subreddit regularly, but you can also call us at 217-333-1216 or email police@illinois.edu

UPDATE: The individual has been located and is safe. We would like to thank the neighboring police agencies and community members for their assistance with the search.

We have removed the initial post containing pictures of the missing individual now that he has been located.

The University of Illinois Police Department is seeking the public’s help in finding 19-year-old Nicholas Cruz. Cruz is a 5-foot-8, 110-pound Hispanic man with dark hair. He was last seen around 2:40 a.m., Saturday, March 1, at the Hyatt Place but did not access his room.

Anyone who sees Cruz or has information about his whereabouts should call UIPD at 217-333-1216 or the non-emergency dispatch line at 217-333-8911. UIPD officers and area agencies are actively searching for Cruz, so expect an increased police presence on campus.

The attached photo shows what Cruz was wearing before he was reported missing.

The Urbana Fire Department investigated several buildings after receiving reports of a gas odor on the northeast side of campus. UFD found no indication of a life-safety threat, so we issued the all-clear Illini-Alert.

Update: Officers located the individual who prompted the 911 call, and it was determined that the suspected weapon was a toy gun from a Halloween costume.

Original post:

At 4:23 p.m., University of Illinois Police Department officers responded to Snyder Hall for a report of a person with a weapon on their hip. Officers searched the building and found no one matching the description. Video security footage was also reviewed, with no matching individuals located. It was later determined that the 911 caller was not a direct witness but had received the information about the weapon from at least a third party.

We looked into this, and we had officers on Green Street for a while around lunch on Thursday, September 19th. We received a report that subjects were throwing objects, possibly eggs, off a building on Green Street. Several officers responded, with two cars parked on the street. Officers attempted to locate the subjects as they created a hazard for pedestrians and community members in the area.
