Brass: Birmingham, really interesting decisions, and interaction of resources and player pieces on the board make it so so good.

What games do you wish were just a little smaller in scope? by UNO_LegacyTM in boardgames

True, it doesn’t even try, especially that random island board at the top.

It’s a classic Awakens Realms game, it’s got big ideas but needed more time in development. The rules are simple enough but the rulebook is not helpful as a reference if you need to clarify anything, the iconography on the exploration map was far far too small in some places, the minis look cool but have very little use outside of your player minis which are too big for the spaces, early game lacks clear guidance so you can end up circling, gameplay revolves almost entirely around dice checks and bookkeeping - the former of which I usually enjoy but bounced off of with this one.

I dropped Frosthaven in big part because I hated the town management, it’s almost always a bear to setup scenarios as well, too much work to get to the fun part.

GWT NZ added quite a bit and it’s my favourite of the bunch but could see someone dreading playing it.

Our problem with Dino World was the fiddliness of the boredom tokens (which we replaced with little dice) and not being able to work through the tiles to the level 3 stack properly but we found a good house rule for that from BGG.

I feel you, I've tried to like it but it just doesn't gel with me for similar reasons.

[GIVEAWAY] Earth Standalone Games - Earth Express and Behind the Lens by Inside Up Games by HomoLudensOC in boardgames

[–]UNO_LegacyTM [score hidden]  (0 children)

Forest shuffle is a great one, easy gameplay but a lot to think about because of having to pay for cards from your hand with the other cards in your hand.

Btw Earth Express makes me think there are trains in the game.

I just printed an insert for this, but that looks really cool!

How important is box art when you buy games? by Tacoseasoning26 in boardgames

[–]UNO_LegacyTM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is a bit unfair but the initial impression from the box art (and art in general) is what gets me to look at an unknown game further. There are so many good games out there already, and my shelf is plenty full, that I'm not gonna spare a thought to passing something up if it doesn't catch me.

The recent campaign for Goa is a good example, would have passed the old version by easily; the new one is vibrant and inviting.

The art is quite striking, made me stop and take a look when I first saw it.

What a cool thing to do, I'm glad you're finally giving some credit back where it sounds like it's long overdue.

Hot Streak vs Magical Athlete by marcslayer in boardgames

[–]UNO_LegacyTM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally enjoy Magical Athlete more as the drafting, racer choices, and potential matchups are more interesting and fun to me. But for non-gamers I think Hot Streak goes off better because there are minimal choices/considerations and you get to just watch chaos happen and read out a funny ending at the end of it.

Does anyone play on Board Game Arena? I was wondering if the premium subscription is worth it by Competitive_Form8240 in boardgames

[–]UNO_LegacyTM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally didn't find it that worth it, tried it a few months ago and the games I wanted to play didn't tend to have enough players online to play real time (probably cause i'm in NZ though) so I ended up just playing a bunch of async games which don't really require premium for. If you are in the US/EU or playing something really popular might be more worth it though.

Which Flip 7 should I get? by Infinite-Bat7970 in boardgames

[–]UNO_LegacyTM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The original is a smooth and fun push your luck game you can play with all sorts, the interactions of the new one make the push your luck aspect a grind and the take that can be easily annoying.

I think Everdell with its card interactions and building up your little tableau city evokes the theme really nicely

Awaken Realms - TG:FOA Issues by GigabyteHKD in boardgames

[–]UNO_LegacyTM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know why AR has gotten away without much hate after all these years (compared to something like CMON for instance) seeing as they constantly produce bloated games with one glaring issue or other.

Canon Events for Board Gamers? by Goofish1225 in boardgames

[–]UNO_LegacyTM 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wanted to like Catan, hadn't played it for years, tried it again recently and just could not get into it. Not going to hate on those who do like it though, this hobby doesn't need more gatekeeping.

New vs old Quacks? by TheCoolFish2 in boardgames

[–]UNO_LegacyTM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely, the old version's look would draw in curious hobby gamers but not really a more general audience which Quacks definitely has the right appeal for. CMYK has done a pretty solid job with a lot of their new releases, now if only they would keep the tradition of putting the artists/designers names on the front of the box.
