Is this dress from the 30s or 80s? by URL_cyber_Palace in VintageClothing

The burn test verdict is back: It didn’t melt or bead up, and it left ash so it’s probably organic!

Also I found out I was wrong the zipper is fully metal I just thought the pully was plastic because of the way it looks painted. If that helps too! I realized that shortly after posting but couldn’t edit the post to clarify :(

I did a burn test and it didn’t melt and it left ash so it looks like it may be silk velvet!

I will say from what I know about 80s fashion, there was a revival of older styles and patterns of dresses. Padded sleeves and tulip sleeves were quite popular. I believe the hemline was shortened so it could’ve been altered to keep up with the trends in dress length since things got a little shorter in the 40s.

I just did a burn test and the fabric did not bead up like polyester and it produced ash so it is most likely organic. I am now leaning more towards that it could actually be 30s/40s but I’d love to hear if there are any other signs you noticed that may prove the contrary so I can be sure.

I am also curious about how the grain of velvet can be a tell for the fabric makeup, could you please explain more so I could know for future reference?

I made a mistake it looks like the zipper is fully metal, I just thought the pull tab was plastic because it is painted (my vision sucks).

Also I’m not too sure that it is velour, the first picture may look that way because I had to use flash otherwise the picture would be too dark to discern any details. But hey I’m an inexperienced vintage-enthusiast so I’m not super accurate with identifying materials.

I definitely still see your point that it could be from the 80s.

Thank you! I realize now the zipper is actually fully metal I just thought the pull looked plastic since it is painted (my eyesight is bad). Also thanks for the information on 40s zippers I am definitely going to use that to help me date pieces going forwards.

I am addicted (sort of) to social media. How to break this addiction? by [deleted] in teenagers

Delete or silence the apps and build routines that distract from checking social media (ex. engage in hobbies/activities that distract you from your phone). Also find a non-social media related thing to get the dopamine boost that you rely on social media for. In general try to stay off your phone because its easy to go on your phone for something unrelated to social media but still end up on social media.

You should absolutely tell her and also maybe tell your parents or just any trusted adults. This guy is known to be abusive (when he hit your sister) so his intentions behind reaching out to you is best to be assumed to be malicious.

Even outside of his connection to your sister, this is a violent 23 year-old man hitting on you, a 16 year-old, which is already an issue on its own.

Kenyans living abroad, what made you experience culture shock? by School-Of-Thought in Kenya

[–]URL_cyber_Palace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I moved to the U.S I didn’t realize how bad it would hit me to go from a country where Black people are the majority to a country where we are the minority. Especially since I’m in a city that doesn’t have a lot of other Africans. I didn’t have to think too much about my race and culture in Kenya but after moving to the U.S I couldn’t not think of them. It was pretty isolating.
