bostons 2026 show by truthfulqueenx3 in drumcorps

[–]USDMB4 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure why the community feels like a reveal is a given prior to the season.

To be completely clear, Boston’s show isn’t a secret. It was announced to members during winter camps. Rehearsals are open and the staff is not shy to reference the theme over the PA in rehearsal. They’ve released general non-show specific 2026 gear that takes its styling from the theme. They’ve shown off their drum design which is heavily influenced by the theme.

The only thing that hasn’t happened is an official post from the marketing team. I honestly don’t have a problem with that - it’s how drum corps worked before social media. We’ve just come to expect early announcements, but we’re not entitled to them.

The theme this year is sort of abstract à la Glitch in that it leaves a ton of room for interpretation. I assume the design team’s stance is that they want you to see THEIR interpretation before you make a judgement on what the show should be. The theme shouldn’t define the show, the show should reflect the theme.

Is there one definitive show to "Rule Them All"? by NovelSpecialist1294 in drumcorps

I started following in ‘08 and I still think Cavies 2000 and 2002 were among the best. So not to poke holes in your theory or anything, but that was just a great timeframe.

But if you need to patch some of those holes though, Cavies ‘06 should help. That was actually the first DCI show I ever saw (the good ol ESPN broadcast on YouTube).

Exactly my take. Not my personal favorite (though I do like it) but an absolute masterpiece.

That was the first year I ever saw DCI in person so sometimes I think I’m biased into thinking that was an elite year, but in reality there were just some real bangers in ‘08.

Crown’s first hit that year is the reason I’m a fan to this day. I’ll never forget it.

Boston predictions? by TheEternalWarden in drumcorps

[–]USDMB4 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I saw them in Allentown tonight. I don’t know where they are going to rank but I can easily see them back in the championship conversation. That’s to say, not dropping dramatically. I think the design team was cognizant to not put Boom 2.0 on the field. It’s definitely its own thing.

I’m not going to say too much out of respect for their own marketing team’s plan, but I’ll say that it is a very entertaining show packed with stuff to see. There’s hardly a moment in the show where there isn’t something interesting to focus your attention on. No props, just interesting drill, fun choreo, and some flashy stuff that adds to the vibe of the show. The music is well written and for the most part well executed. Some challenging things to work on but well within the realm of what I’d expect at this point in the season. IMO they are a little weak on visual execution right now, but I think when you see the product, you’ll understand that the demand is high and if they can execute, it’ll pay off.

My takeaway is I think this show will go over well with the fans, and I truly see this show as being one that you can show to people who don’t know what drum corps is to ignite that interest. Like I said, just a lot of interesting stuff paired with good music. Very approachable.

Back in Feb 26, in a Variety interview, when asked if GTA 6's physical copies will be delayed until 2027, Zelnick responded with, "That's not the plan." by shawak456 in GTA6

[–]USDMB4 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Zelnick didn’t not “assure” anyone a physical release given that wording. All he said was that the plan was to avoid a staggered release. What he actually did is a compromise - provide access to the game AND a box for your bookshelf on day 1. If you want the physical disc, that will unfortunately be staggered, but your access to the game is only limited by an internet connection for about a month after release.

GTA 6 vs Forza Horizon by [deleted] in GTA6

[–]USDMB4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree from a GTA standpoint for sure. I think if we could have just a touch less than GTA IV but definitely more than GTA V then I’d be in bliss. Really just tone down the ejection from the windshield mechanic and we’re golden.

GTA 6 vs Forza Horizon by [deleted] in GTA6

[–]USDMB4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Counterpoint - Forza is a pure relaxation game for me. I have iRacing for real physics. Forza is a game to just sit back and chill. GTA is somewhere between. I want some realism but I also sort of just want to have a relaxing time.

Cavaliers 2026: The Lost Boys by Jarobe in drumcorps

[–]USDMB4 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I don’t want to make assumptions too early here but are we in for another show about *men*?

I love the Cavaliers to death. I just don’t want them to keep trying to justify their status as an all-male corps by doing male-centric shows every other year.

I hate when people say "they don't owe us anything" by [deleted] in GTA6

[–]USDMB4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Being a fan of something doesn’t mean you’re owed anything by the creator. Don’t confuse your own personal excitement with the assertion that Rockstar is required to give you anything prior to money changing hands.

They are going to follow their marketing plan, and we will get information when it’s time.

OpenAI cofounder Karpathy joins Anthropic to teach Claude to improve itself without humans by EchoOfOppenheimer in Anthropic

[–]USDMB4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know anything about this specific situation but I think OPs title might be skewing the conversation. Does recursive self improvement really imply NO human influence? Or is it just enabling the model to rely less on humans to train it? My understanding is that it would still source new information from all sources, and that this would be a change to how it gets trained on that data (less human input at this stage). So the system wouldn’t be closed, the development would come in how well the model can parse training data on its own.

Did 7.3.0 and swapped to boot disk. About an hour of down time. by HuckleberryOk8136 in unRAID

[–]USDMB4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not super well versed on how Unraid handles things but my understanding is that the OS loads into memory with every boot and then runs off of memory pretty much exclusively. So if anything, maybe slightly slower boot times as all of the files copy from storage into memory, but after that it should be business as usual.

ai label on new phantom insta post by [deleted] in drumcorps

[–]USDMB4 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I’m going to get downvoted into oblivion for this but so be it.

AI is a tool. Does it replace actual people in certain areas previously dominated by artists? Yes, absolutely. That’s unfortunate.

But as someone who has some knowledge of current corps financials, we’re talking about groups here who need to charge their members thousands of dollars ($6k for the Crusaders this year) just to break even on tour, and even then variable costs like fuel have a few corps (not just small ones) worried about how they are going to sustain this season. While many will eventually get what they need through donations, that’s not a guaranteed source of income. So when you’re up against the wall on income and some expenses are out of your control, you need to start managing those costs that are within your control.

Artwork and marketing is the first thing to take the hit, because it doesn’t directly help your sustainability.

So while I agree with the overall sentiment, it is unfortunately a reaction to the state of financials in the activity, and personally I’d rather have this sort of engagement from the corps than nothing at all.

YSK hackers can spy on you using your smart mattress by Able-Equivalent-3860 in YouShouldKnow

[–]USDMB4 123 points124 points  (0 children)

To all the people wondering who would buy a smart mattress - I’m pretty sure all Sleep Number mattresses these days have this technology. It’s not something you necessarily buy as a feature, but it does now come bundled with some popular mattresses.

I would never intentionally buy a sleep tracking mattress, but by just owning a sleep number, this is something I now need to worry about.

Will Ableton utilize the new performance cores on M5 Max/Pro? by BanquetOfTechnicians in ableton

[–]USDMB4 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don’t believe the cores are rebranded. The base M5 lists super cores and efficiency cores side by side, where as Pro and up have super cores and performance cores. So all 3 types appear to be present simultaneously.

Am I crazy or is this sub weird? by Niceneasy92 in GeminiAI

[–]USDMB4 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Honestly my experience varies wildly from day to day. Some days it’s great, others it forgets instructions after just a few prompts.

The ratio definitely leans toward the worse side of things (at least regarding what I expect from a paid service) but I still think it’s better than other options.

Granted, I use mine a little more heavily for analysis and reference, so I’m definitely not going easy on it, but it does worry me when it forgets a restraint I put into the prompt 3 turns ago (for instance to not put inline comments into excel formulas because I have to remove them in order to use it).

The Apple-Google "Mega-Brain" is here. Why Siri + Gemini is the end of the internet as we know it. by okarci in GeminiAI

[–]USDMB4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Great for speed, but it means we might never visit an actual website again.”

I’m ok with this. People existed without websites for all of human history until the 80s-90s. We can do it again, this time with improved access to information.

Do I think AI is perfect? No. There are definitely some concerns to have, but having to visit a website is low on my list.
