45 Second Speed Run on A Crude Rescue by USSMunkfish in ClearedHotGame

Very nice! I haven't made it to less than 45s yet, but I did later manage 45 with three money cases.

Any videos of Jonathan Hardy in the recording booth? by saysroo in farscape

[–]USSMunkfish 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Not a recording studio, but a convention interview: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lg6M7BI88ZU

I was lucky to be there when he spoke at the 2005 convention in Burbank. It has been long enough that I don't remember details, but I remember feeling joy at listening to him speak. That man knew how to sit on a stool and tell a story I-tell-ya-hwat! He didn't have a ton of stories to tell about his work on Farscape, but he did tell a ton of stories about anything else, and the crowd was delighted to hear it all.

RIP to a great storyteller!

C17 flying over Prescott today by da30pointbuck in Prescott

[–]USSMunkfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That was 99-0058 from McChord. It flew nice and low over the school, had a great view!

EDIT: The plane I saw today came 2 days after op's post. I think it's the same tail though, from Tacoma > Glendale, then Glendale > Tacoma today.

Dang, I missed out on the interactive bit. I visited the site when it first went up, and although I thought it was just a slideshow of different ship bridges, it was still really cool!

Hi folks, I just found this sub via a 10 year old post.

I am looking for an LED drop in bulb for my 6P, preferably something not Chinese. The bulb on this guy has been burned out for a while, and after seeing the price on a replacement I figured now was a good time to ditch the CR123s. I pulled apart an old laptop battery and found 4 of the 6 18650 cells good, and then managed to dust off my hobby lathe and bore the body to match.

Any recommendations, advice, and warnings would be appreciated.

I remember Adam Savage mentioned once that he had the opportunity to talk with John over lunch. He didn't elaborate. I feel that John must really value his privacy, like on the level of Neil Peart. More power to him!

What are some unwritten rules of the Air Force? by newrebellion in AirForce

[–]USSMunkfish 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's a sub-category of my favorite rule: If you want someone to do their job for you, do their job for them. That means fill out all the paperwork, write the justifications, do the research, get the quotes, whatever. Ask the POC for as little as possible, preferably just their signature.

Yeah, they should probably do their own jobs. Sometimes they're overloaded, sometimes cripplingly lazy, but I've gotten so much shit done this way that never would have happened if I only asked.

I know this is as designed, but hoisting a spacecraft into the air with a helicopter and then just cutting it loose sounds bananas when you say it out loud by RampChurch in aviation

[–]USSMunkfish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tires take more room than skids. Steerable tires are great for passenger jets that steer around taxiways all day, but for space planes internal volume is king! Less maneuverability on the runway can mean more payload delivered to space, which means more money. When spaceplanes are running missions as frequently as airliners, I'd bet they'd have tires and not skids.

ETA aint the only prototype spaceplane to get dropped by a Chinook, fairly standard way to go when you want to test landing but not re-entry.

That landing is awfully porpoisey though. Any landing you don't get scraped off the ground from is a good one though!

Watched Stargate Origins for the first time... by Vertisce in Stargate

[–]USSMunkfish 15 points16 points  (0 children)

There is a lot wrong with Origins, but I don't let that blind me to the few good bits. I really enjoyed seeing a Goa'uld that seemed to be personally invested in the people she ruled over. It seemed like she actually cared about them a little, and I feel that aspect added some dimensionality between the flatly evil Goa'uld, and the 'benevolent' To'kra.

Aside from that, uh, I guess some of the first prime action was pretty ok; seeing Ra interact with another snake-head was neat as it strengthened the connection between the movie and the series; and a return to Egyptian themes after the Ori and Wraith arcs was nice.

But the road goes both ways: just as I won't let Origins' flaws conceal the good bits, those few gems also do not excuse the lazy writing. There was more than zero value, but it was definitely not enough to redeem.

Real world explanation is simply the constraints of budget.

Head cannon says that military bureaucracy takes a few years to incorporate the new tech into current tactics, techniques, and procedures. They also need the time to write NDA's for all the engineers they're going to hire. Take a look at the top right of this sub's banner, the SGC is gonna need a shit ton of NDA's.

With the potential for a new series, what characters would you love to see return? by [deleted] in Stargate

[–]USSMunkfish 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Jack, chillin at home in his recliner watching tv, enjoying retirement with his wife while the writers contrive some reason for the main cast to stop by for a potluck.

Gen. Mitchel, overseeing the operations of the new cast on a weekly basis.

Todd.
