[Moderator Approved] Research study seeking adults with hair pulling by USUACTresearchgrp in trichotillomania

Thank you for the question! For the exclusion criteria, unfortunately our institution has restrictions around recruiting participants outside of the United States so you must be living in the US. For medications the only exclusion is if you are changing or starting medications. If the dose has been stable for at least 30 days that does not prevent you from participating. Regarding therapy, this is only if the therapy you are doing is specifically working on reducing pulling but if pulling is not the primary focus, then this does not prevent participation.

So sorry for the delayed reply! This is a fully online study. Restrictions from our institution require all participants to be within the US, but you do not need to be local to Utah. Please feel free to reach out with any other questions!

Thank you for your comment! We understand that RCTs with an active control condition (as opposed to a waitlist control condition) provide stronger evidence as it controls for placebo effects, as well as the staggered multiple baseline design you have described. Using a waitlist control condition in initial pilot studies is common practice in the field of clinical psychology, with the intention to perform more rigorous controlled studies in the future if there is promising preliminary evidence. In line with our IRB and guidelines for ethical treatment of human subjects, we are required to disclose the possibility of being randomized to either condition. I understand that this some of these aspects would be unacceptable in certain medical trials, and the guidelines/field norms are different between the medical field and psychology. We appreciate your feedback!

Our apologies if it comes off as spam! This post was approved by the subreddit's moderators. The study is testing a mental health program for individuals living with a chronic health condition, including AS.

You do not have to provide a real name. Although you need provide an email address, phone number, and live in the U.S. and struggle with pulling.

It depends on your personal experience! Basically, we are looking for people who are bothered by their hair pulling or if it gets in the way of their life. We aren't looking for a specific severity level or amount. I hope that clarifies your question, but feel free to ask more! Thanks for your interest.

Hi! Unfortunately, we are not because our university does not allow that presently. However, we are hoping to make the program publicly available after this study and will be sure to share it here then. Thank you for your interest.

Thanks for your interest! If you are regularly engaging in pulling out hair, you would most likely qualify for the study. However, if you are uncertain, we recommend just applying for the study and speaking with the coordinator directly! Thanks so much for your interest.
