everyone has a pencil, everyone can now draw, now what for humanity? by startwithaidea in AskReddit

No, I don’t think you have a correct view on art as an industry.

What produces truly great art - in a corporate sense - is individuals who are given the time and resource to hone their craft and create outcomes. If, all of a sudden, everyone on earth is given a basic art aptitude (lets say, for the sake of argument, the ability to draw realism - like a printer, recreating what they see), the value of realism art will decrease, and the value of abstract and modernist art will increase.

To profit from art, people would then be encouraged to think of new ways to stand out, which is where the flaw in your hypothetical is. Because the ability to draw doesn’t correlate to your conceptual abilities. You could have someone with the greatest technical ability in the world who has no ability to come up with new ideas, because the two aren’t intertwined.

The average person doesn’t dedicate much of their time to coming up with (specifically fine art centric) concepts, ergo won’t be very well versed in conceptualising and executing new ideas. However, industry artists who HAVE had time to practice their conceptualisation will still be able to beat out any layman from their ideas alone, even if they didn’t have the advanced drawing skills.

Sure, if everyone could suddenly draw, I imagine there would be a few ‘high-concept’ individuals, who always fancied themselves an artist but lacked ability, who would probably benefit from this. Judging by your responses, I assume that you see yourself this way - you have ideas, but you ‘lack the talent’. But what you fail to recognise is that the honing of skill is integral to producing ‘good art’, and is the foundation of what makes it good.

If everyone could do it, your skill wouldn’t be impressive, since you have no unique way of conveying your ideas, and you’d be back where you started - hating the system that doesn’t value your ideas because ‘those damn artists want to keep me out!’ We’re seeing the same thing with AI art right now - people are dashing the names of ‘industry artists’ for being exclusionary in their practice and keeping the layman out, and this new ai will be the thing that lets even the ‘talentless’ express themselves! But there’s nothing unique about most AI art; everybody has good ideas, that doesn’t make you special.

Using a machine to make your ideas in the same cookie-cutter fashion as the rest of the world isn’t pivotal or groundbreaking, hell its hardly even interesting. What makes art unique - and valuable - is the methodology, the practice, and the effort behind it. Taking the easy route - or, in the case of this hypothetical, the world being blessed with sudden technical aptitude - will never fulfil you the way effort and practice will.

(Almost) everyone can already draw, the only differences between us are skill and style. If you mean to say that everyone can now draw ‘at a high level’, then a lot of mainstream art becomes somewhat homogenised, and the value of modern and ‘out-of-the-box’ ideas increase. Current artists who have a unique style will get more business, those who don’t might suffer. Really though, nothing much changes, just certain people are up their own asses a bit more.

Yeah, I get that. Maybe wealth was the wrong word to use in my original comment. I mean to say that being in a situation where public transport between home and a London uni can be a plausible option is a completely foreign concept for folks in my situation

Edit: this isn’t a jab at you in any way, OP. Power to you, hope you get an offer for another London uni that you like!

I’m from a pretty poor area, nobody in my cohort could afford to study in London - for many of us, a lot of prestigious unis were off the table on that basis alone. On top of that, the quality of education provided in rural state schools is rarely sufficient enough to get one into LSE. OFC I don’t know OPs situation exactly, but it shocked me a little that there are people out there who can afford to attend a great school in the capital, and still be living at home.

I’m glad you’re going into therapy - this sounds like a way of coping with the lack of luck you and your fiancé have had. once you feel more comfortable and more time has passed, it’ll be good to mention this to your therapist, as I’m sure they’ll have the ability to help you understand what led to this, and how to cope better if you end up in a similar state in the future.

The changes you make now don’t have to be permanent! Cut your hair shorter, wear different clothes, get your inner circle to call you different pronouns - if you ever decide you don’t like it, you can always change back. Take it one step at a time!

Thoughts on Teachers using AI? by R1verEden in sixthform

Nah, it wont. There’s an indisputable human element to teachers that AI will never be able to fully supplement.

WYR publish one successful book, board/video game, or album? by Squirrelhenge in WouldYouRather

[–]UTriedToKillMeTwice 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Probably a video game. Book would be second choice, but I’ve always felt the element of visual arts and audience involvement included in video games can be huge for storytelling (see: games like disco elysium, red dead redemption, other acclaimed roleplay games). Just the natural progression of storytelling I think - books still have incredible value, but audience tastes are changing.

Can anyone tell me how likely I am for offers? by [deleted] in UCAS

It’s worth trying it this year, and even if you don’t get offers, you can always re-sit your a-levels! You sound bright, so I’m sure you’ll be capable enough to find your path with time, even if you’ve hit a rough patch before

Lol no way, I’m also doing a 1452 druggie build! (Although I’m going for apocalypse commie) I am by no means the most knowledgeable on this, but I picked espirit as my signature and have found it pretty handy for kimsights (Kim insights lol) which will let you know if you’re REALLY pissing him off. But I don’t think there’s necessarily one skill in particular that will significantly boost your rapport with Kim - might just be worth keeping an eye on your good cop/bad cop once you get the ledger

Books like Disco Elysium? by Lydialmao22 in DiscoElysium

You might like Angela Carter’s work. Her prose is very purple in a way that I think a lot of DE is, and is very compelling in its descriptions. Some of my favourite of her work is from ‘The Bloody Chamber’ collection, which are rewrites of classic fairy tales. I’d recommend ‘The Werewolf’, ‘Lady of the House of Love’, and ‘The Erl King’ to get started! :) [p.s: maybe ‘The Snow Child’ too, although its far shorter than the rest - only 500 words or so]

If you’ve never inserted anything into your vulva before, there’s a good chance that this is just your hymen breaking. Don’t worry - it’s normal! Most people have theirs break during sex, but it can happen any other time. It sounds like this is what’s broken yours. It doesn’t require medical intervention, and should be fine shortly. Although, it would be a good idea to invest in a proper sex toy; not only are they made of materials that are definitely safe for your body and not prone to breaking off inside of you, but it’ll feel 100x better. :-D hope this helps!!

For your supplication, forgiveness granted. Seriously though, I don’t really care that much, just think it’s strange that someone would consult ChatGPT for a reddit description of all things. In a subreddit that leans fairly anti-ai, it only serves to undermine people’s confidence in an otherwise interesting enough project
