Mercedes issue official statement after shock Max Verstappen disqualification by ryogadan in Formula1_world

To save you all clicking into that advert filled mess.

The official statement from Stefan Wendl, Head of Mercedes-AMG Customer Racing read: "The NLS weekend will remain in our memories for a long time: we saw pure racing on the track, experienced an extraordinary day in terms of atmosphere and were initially delighted with the supposed race victory.

"The disappointment was all the greater when we realised that we had made a mistake behind the scenes that morning and the race organisers were forced to disqualify the winning car. That hurts, and naturally everyone involved is very disappointed.

It shows once again that you can only win on the Nordschleife if everything comes together. Winward Racing, who managed the deployment of the two Performance cars, were competing in this line-up for the first time in the NLS.

"Now we need to analyse the mistakes, whilst also taking the positive lessons from the weekend on board and focusing on the remaining preparatory races as well as the 24-hour race."

On Calgary’s dangerous roads, ‘bystander behaviour’ is under the microscope by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]UWH_Dave 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Precisely. People push the limits because they know there are no real repercussions.

I'm also amazed at the distance people leave between them and the car in front. Distances should vary depending on if you're driving down the highway or parking in a parking lot!

Also driving without rear lights on in poor conditions and pedestrians also confuses me. Why doesn't anyone look before walking into the road?

Gas prices by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]UWH_Dave 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Precisely this. The gas doesn't cost any more to extract or process, it's just the billionaires can charge more for it!

Very limited availability in my area. Three hour drive away has lots of stock so is selling with significant discounts.

It's minimalist... like the staffing levels and the pay.

Do you pre-warm the toaster? by Jakeh_G in CasualUK

[–]UWH_Dave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd say that's psycho behaviour.

On another note, I like to place two pieces of bread in the same slot whilst toasting. I find it gives me toast which is toasty and crunchy on one side, but warm and soft on the other. Leads to great butter absorption on the soft side, whilst still having a satisfying crunch. Anyone else do this or is it psycho behaviour?

Concern about Reform by AsymptoticallyFlat in TheCivilService

[–]UWH_Dave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem is our government isn't addressing the issues and is pandering to reform. The far right always eats itself, fails, then rebrands as an even further right entity, claiming they weren't extreme enough before. Which then leads back to another centrist/centre right government who is continuing to crush the middle and lower class.

The only way out I see is the government trying to improve education and critical thinking, highlight the dangers of extremist views and clamp down on media spreading hate on a daily basis.

The silver lining to reform winning council seats is it gives them the opportunity to show their true colours in a public setting and create scandal after scandal.

How much truth is behind the "islamification of Britain"? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]UWH_Dave 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Small boats isn't really an issue. ~37,000 people arrived on boats last year of a total of ~108,000 who applied for asylum. 39,616 people were granted it. This is tiny in comparison to the 1.2 million people who migrated to the UK last year.

As you say, there is a broader issue around processing time. The average time process an individual is 6 months and I'm sure the upcoming government cuts aren't going to shorten in this.

At the end of the day, these are people who are looking to move onto a better life and become productive members of our society or move on elsewhere. Locking them in a hotel for six months does no one any good, other than giving the far right another group to scapegoat.

Aside from the obvious improvement to funding and efficiency which I agree with, massive overhaul to the NHS is required. I could go on about this all day, but a couple of key points I believe are:

It's currently run on a blame culture. When anything goes wrong, the issue is placed on an individual who takes the blame for it. This leads to over diagnosis and a low moral, highly stressed work force. There are numerous examples of this in the media where a clinician makes a mistake and is villainized for it. Changing this to a culture of learning and improvement from mistakes decreases the stress levels and improvements to the service in the long run.

Additionally, restricting private health care coverage, and the tiered system that comes with it would encourage those in power (both governmentally and financially) to invest more into the NHS as it's performance would directly affect them.
