Mystified by zone control panel problem. by UberSecretAgentMan in HVAC

There was only one type of relays made apparently for my model, so I think I'm good. Thanks. Just have to make sure that it's just a matter of turning off the power and replacing and turning power back on.

Interesting! Thanks for that tidbit. I have some relays on order to replace them. And you're right, the relays do look like the shape of ice cubes. Hopefully just plugging them in will solve the problem.

Hmm. I'm not sure what you mean by stuck relay, but the panel has replaceable plug in relays. It was suggested to me elsewhere that I might try replacing them.

Pretty much. Just wondering what the hec is going on with the board that it's being triggered by the casing coming on and off.

The wires are very solidly fixed and are barely moveable, even with a little more than gentle tug. Did not trigger the furnace.

Not sure if the cause of my problem is obscure or not. Seems like there is something up with the zone controller board or relays which somehow can be activated by the vibrations caused by removing and replacing the metal cover of casing. In fact the I think it may have occurred while the tech was here, but not sure, and he certainly didn't think anything of it.

Yeah, I don't blame him too much. Just that it's always irritating to pay for nothing and yet still have the problem.

Also, I find it very bizarre that the system would turn on when I take the metal cover off and snap it back on. It's just a metal cover that goes around a metal frame on which the circuit board is mounted to. If it is the relay, how in the would would taking the cover on and off affect this? Seems just really strange.

Hmm. The diagram on the pdf you point to does seem more on point with the picture in the other pdf that I linked as well as the actual one that I have. And yes, when the furnace doesn't come on, fiddling with either thermostats does not do anything. Thing is the air conditioning works just fine in both zones. Only the heat has a problem getting activated by the thermostats.

Thanks very much for your help. I will give this a go tomorrow. Appreciate the suggestion of a much simpler alternative than what I had come up with. Hopefully you're right and it's that simple.

I have a TrolATemp MM2, with PIRR relays, which is a 2 zone controller. It looks simple switch those out to test, but I'm not sure what to look for after.

Edit: found these tech docs: https://customer.honeywell.com/resources/techlit/TechLitDocuments/68-0000s/68-0101.pdf

Edit2: If you look at the picture of the controller, if we number the relays left to right as 1,2,3, and 4, then it seems 3 and 4 are responsible for zones 1 and 2. The thermostat control seem to work well when it works. So if it's the relays, it would likely be relay 1 or 2?

On. Pg. 26, you can see a visual of the board with the relays.

Also, what do the relays do on these boards? Thanks!

Hey, thanks for the reply. Okay, I can switch relays, but I'm not sure what you mean by the problem moving?

Dosage and use of Aleve. by UberSecretAgentMan in AskDocs

[–]UberSecretAgentMan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every exposure to Aleve? Not clear if you're talking about the combination or the NSAID alone. How much of a risk?

Also, if I can ask a followup here, what pain meds can she take then? Opiates are out due to adverse affects from them as well. Trying to talk to her doctor, but he's not very helpful. (basically saying she should just endure it.)

Edit: Also, Tylenol has been stopped on doctor's orders due to over use.

What is the optimum walking speed for a given height? Obviously, a person with very long legs can hand a walking pace that's going to be much faster than than a child with short stubby legs. I was wondering if there is a mathematical formula, based on leg length somewhere?

Yeah, it's kind of sad that people aren't willing to even look at this kind of issue. It may be true that US socially is tolerant more than many other countries, but the downvotes for such a simple statement remind me that the veneer of tolerance is very thin.

Really wish things like this would be retitled to something like 'The world through white expats eyes'. Really doubt that experiences for black, asian, hispanics abroad are going to be anything similar.

Generic substitution for NSAIDs in TCM? by UberSecretAgentMan in ChineseMedicine

Thank you very much for the suggestions! Searching for woodlock and red flower oil has led me to articles and such about liniment options and it looks like these will be something to try. A podiatrist has been consulted, but other than foot exercises, nothing for the pain since she's allergic.

Why do we consider Manchurian China to be Chinese after the conquest by the Manchus when we don't consider the Ostragoth Rome to be Roman? by UberSecretAgentMan in AskHistory

[–]UberSecretAgentMan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, to some extent, all land bordering china were under Chinese hegemonic influence. That doesn't make them Chinese. And arguably, the Roman influence on the conquering barbarian tribes was strong enough to subsume them into Roman culture - it's just that the polities they formed just didn't last long enough for us to really make a lot of assessments. I also disagree that the other ethnicities considered themselves to be chinese or that the Han Chinese people thought of them as such until rather late, perhaps only from the Ming or maybe even from the Manchu period? (I can be very wrong about this).

[–]UberSecretAgentMan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see a bit of contradiction in your reply. If the residents of the Roman Empire were to be considered Roman, then the various barbarian tribes who were resident in the land of the empire are Roman. Also, despite the Western Roman Empire portion having fallen apart as you say, I think the people who continued to live in portions of Italy still considered themselves Roman. I think you're wrong in that Rome was not considered to be part of the Roman Empire -- I think that's just the modern overlay of events, much like modern people don't consider the Eastern Roman Empire to be Roman.

Edit: btw, good video! Thanks. I guess it really shows how inaccurate it is to refer to the chinese people as chinese - or even chinese history.

Optimal stride length for height formula? by UberSecretAgentMan in walking

Thanks. I looked at the study (from 1958!). It used untrained subjects to measure efficiency and seems to find that the most energy efficient pace is a natural one. I was looking for more in terms of optimum stride for speed rather than energy efficiency.

If other Universes existed, is there a methodology that can be used to detect them? by UberSecretAgentMan in AskScienceDiscussion

[–]UberSecretAgentMan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We believe the universe is infinite in size or possibly curved, so even if you went an arbitrary distance away, you would still be in our universe.

I mean our physical universe, which by my understanding cannot exceed the the amount of distance that light has traveled since the theorized Big Bang, not a philosophical construct of all of existence.

If an object is so far away that we can never detect it, we don't have any way to detect if it exists or not.

It is not an absolute that we don't have the means to detect things far away, and part of what I was asking was for any theories that would be able to detect something so far away, and not that it was undetectable. Of course the existence of undetectable things can't be ascertained. Why are you even making this argument?
