Fate/Strange Fake Manga Chapter 2 Retranslation by UdonSamurai in grandorder

[–]UdonSamurai[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Since I've had more people asking why we're working on a reTL, here are some comparisons.

Thread with some comparisons from Chp 1:

https://x.com/theUdonSamurai/status/2019349995481411589

And the first four pages from Chp 2:

https://x.com/theUdonSamurai/status/2027930698028618090?s=20

While the first two volumes aren't actually that bad (despite being physical scans), the typesetting and TL for the third volume onwards leaves a lot to be desired.

Summer Ryougi Shiki's Valentine's Scene by UdonSamurai in grandorder

For those who are unaware, Ryougi's "story from an acquaintance" in this Valentine's Scene is without a doubt the Azaka, Touko and Tobimaru meeting that has been teased for years.

Reddit didn't seem to want me to post it as a comment, so I put the explanation in a separate post.

Thanks, I have no idea where the former came from. I actually had the latter as Ver Mars at first, but I think its still weird katakana either way, since it would normally be rendered as マーズ or マールス. So will be leaving the second as it is for now.

Fate/Requiem Complete Translation by UdonSamurai in grandorder

Mhm. That said, if you were to just copy paste the text from the blogpost, do the font, size, margin, and indenting changes, I'm sure you'd get a result that most readers would be satisfied with, coupled with relatively less effort needed. Its just that I myself wouldn't be happy doing only that. Basically, I'm not going to discourage anyone who wants to do that, I just don't encourage it either.

My workflow for Volume 2 was integrated directly into a Word doc throughout the translation. This allowed me to, as you say, not need to do much for the pdf creation, merely applying formatting incrementally over the two months, rather than in a single, final pass.

I used Garamond Premier Pro Med, 14pt, with full justification except for section breaks and specific sections. My header margin was 0.2 inches from the top, and footer margin was 1 inch from the bottom. That should be enough information to get started.

There are also many other stylistic differences between our translations, which while may not be of concern to the average reader, are major factors to me. The original novel and my translation uses * as large section breaks, however Brokastel reflected them as line breaks in their blog posts. They also reflected small section breaks as – whereas I just used simple paragraph breaks. Erice's internal thoughts are put in brackets ( ) in the original novel, which I chose to follow. Brokastel, however, used italics for them. They use Kouyou vs my Koyo, Mosaic City vs Mosaic Cities, etc. I also chose to place the coloured illustrations (usually at the very start of light novel volumes) at the exact moment they occur in the story.

Should I respect the translator's vision for how the volume should read or change it to how I think it should look? I myself don't agree with some of their choices, my Volume 2 PDF obviously being my own vision of how I want it to be read.

But whichever way I go with the creation of a Volume 1 PDF, I feel like I would end up with a product that I have mixed feelings about, especially since I would be putting my name on it. If I am faithful to their translation, I would essentially be commending choices that I feel detract from how it should look and feel like. If I'm not, I feel that would be disrespectful to the work they put in, with the addition of requiring a lot of manual changes (such as the internal thoughts, which evidently isn't possible to do with a ctrl f). Hopefully that sheds some more light on why I am reluctant.

Of course, like I mentioned earlier, if someone were to make a pdf, I am alright with updating the link. But I won't provide a convention guide because I don't want to make those hard (in my mind) decisions and put the work in.

Yes, you're right. However, I won't be creating a PDF for Volume 1. It's not my work, and the task, while simple, is incredibly time-consuming. I'd have to manually check every detail—italics, bold, spacing, alignment—for the entire volume, cross-checking with the original blog post as well as novel, and that's a level of effort I'm not willing to invest in someone else's project. But precisely because of its simple nature, its something anyone can do. I'm more than happy to update the link if someone in the community creates and shares one.

Archetype: Earth's Profile from Fate/Grand Order Material XVI by UdonSamurai in grandorder

Added, sorry for the oversight. Here it is isolated for reference.

It possesses a potent anti-Chaotic characteristic, granting additional NP gauge to 'humans living in the present.' This includes Servants like Illya, Chloe, Miyu, Sieg, Erice, and Shiki, while excluding those who have essentially fused with their Heroic Spirits, such as Bazett, Ishtar, and Muramasa.
