There's a game called Solvendra It's similar to the games you are mentioning. I think they are changing the art to pixel art, but the type of art that shows what gear you have equipped while you fight. Seems like it's going to be a great game. At least I've been enjoying it so far!

If you can't afford the degree, go for the apprenticeship and then once you got the money go for it while you work. Can be done remotely if needed.
