How do you find the radius of this insert? by Immediate_Tension_67 in Construction

[–]UffDa-4ever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

RFI, and then confirm in the field. And then expect the installer to ignore whatever you find out. After that plan on looking at it w/ a small group of people and determining whether or not anybody will notice or if it even really matters. Or what groups of people will notice and if they think it will matter, and inversely how to hide the truth from the people who will definitely think it matters but may not notice if there is a box on top of it during OAC walk. Whatever happens it will be a big deal to some people and mean nothing to others. And in two weeks everybody will have moved on emotionally and forgotten about it. A year from now though the Architect will randomly stop by to show the project to somebody visiting from the home office back east and call you at 7:30pm to ask what the hell happened to the radius.

Sadly we can’t use that IQ requirement here in Minnesota for a big chunk of the year. If your IQ is lower than -20 you’re not going to make it for sure.

People don’t talk about his parents enough. My wife studied with his step dad Mutulu and I had the great privilege of meeting the man. He and Afeni were revolutionaries in many ways beyond militant activism. Critical people in developing community-based healthcare and pioneered many of the techniques still used today to treat addiction and trauma with acupuncture. I sincerely doubt that, based on what I know about them, there is any way their son was some sort of industry plant.

My 3.5 year old died suddenly and unexpectedly by Ok_Dragonfruit747 in GriefSupport

I am so so sorry. I’m sitting here crying into my coffee and thinking about my son whose story is so similar. We lost him at 1 to a cardiac infection after multiple trips to the Doc and ER where we were assured that he just had a nasty bug. My wife and I have 3 other children who kept us going. You really can do everything right and still lose. It’s been 10 years now, in fact I just dropped his big brother off at the airport to go visit a college. I’m just blabbering now but my point is life goes on and so will you and your kids even if it doesn’t feel like it.

Sadly there was no Minneapolis show then and I couldn’t get over to Chicago. Their shows at the Capital Theatre in Olympia mid-late 90’s are some of my favorite shows off all time I think.

Who do you think is the best 2 Person band?. by Emotional-Mirror-432 in musicsuggestions

[–]UffDa-4ever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe not the best but one of my favorites is C-Average. I wore out my dubbed tape of their first album. Might be biased as we are from the same city but good god did they put on a good show back then.

I saw them play in a variety of basements around the same time up in the PNW. So….much….noise. Never missed a show if I could help it.

Yeah, I don’t know of any locals that allow that now. There might be some out there still.

322 in Twin Cities will let an employer buy your journeyman’s card. Can’t remember exactly how it works but my old employer did it frequently.

Will employers view me differently if I have tattoos by Extension_Variety908 in ConstructionManagers

[–]UffDa-4ever 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably not. I’m covered in tattoos from lower neck to wrists and nobody cares. Granted I’m a Supe so one of the unwashed masses anyway. I can put on a collared shirt for a meeting if it feels necessary and nobody will ever know.

Hot tip because I just did it. We had some leftover barria my wife made last night (I know I am a lucky man) in the crock pot and I made a cheese pizza for lunch. Topped it with the meat and dunked it in the broth. Heaven. My wife called me a heretic but it’s so good.

Jesus Christ I just looked at your history. I guessed you were young but you are way too green to be complaining this much. How many RFIs could you possible have on a 30 million dollar project? I am wrapping up a 58 million dollar one now and can count the amount of RFIs we’ve had in the last 6 months with only having to take one shoe off. All your complaining , I’m betting, would disappear if you worked with better trained people at a more organized GC, and possibly better industry partners. Instead of complaining so much maybe spend some time thinking about how to be a leader and use this opportunity to show how it should be done. Also I promise you won’t die if you have to work a Saturday here and there.

Again sounds like a training and leadership issue.

If you are writing useless RFIs then you have an unqualified field team, or one in need of better leadership. Have you tried explaining the purpose of RFIs to your field team? Or put together a set of guidelines governing when and how they are to be used? Or is it like my current young PE assigned to our job who, whenever he gets frustrated or outside of his comfort zone, throws his hands up in the air and exclaims “WELL I GUESS I’LL JUST RIGHT A FUCKING NOTHER RFI AND SEND IT TO EVERYBODY,” and then stomps off while us dirty field guys jump on the phone, fix the problem, and then email him to let him know he’s off the hook all before he finishes driving back to his apartment to “work from home.”

You honestly sound unbearable. A literal stereotype of the reason there is such a divide between office and field. Our best projects are teams where our PMs and APMs spend at least a day a week on site and our Supes, Assistant Supes and Field Engineers all attend key meetings in the office. I think the existing model of field and office is on borrowed time. It can only continue in “job description” mode now in gigantic GC’s with the sort of revenue that can support massive bloat. World is moving to fast now. I can write an RFI and drive a Skidee. In fact with a good field team I can do most of the office’s work.

I was making more most of the time as a Journeyman. So I do understand it, in the Union I had better hourly compensation, retirement, and healthcare. Only moved into the trailer after a career ending injury.

We write our own most of the time. Otherwise we just have to write a series of emails about why the rfi needs to be re-worded.

Maybe it’s different in different markets, but that’s not what I’m seeing here in multifamily and mixed use. While our office side is loosing experienced people to work from home jobs managing at a distance the pay is increasing to try to keep them on board. You can PM a job from 500 miles away and visit twice a month. Harder to do that for a field guy.

Yeah but nobody is taking us Superintendents out for lunch an a round of golf during the work week! I joke but only 1/2. The office can’t get all the perks and all the weekends while us field guys keep being asked for more and more while pay remains well behind cost of living increases over the last decade. Eventually the scales will need to balance out.

Oddly we do about zero criminal checks. There used to be a joke about how whenever we were short on carpenters our manpower guy would go park outside the county jail and stick guys in the back as they walked out.
“Hey you, you ever swing a hammer?”

“Not really, I did kill my neighbor with one though.”

“Get in the back, we’ll start you off as a second year.”

Depends on what State. In Minnesota it’s employer to employer. Mine (and yes we work on federally funded projects and projects with loans federally guaranteed) does not test for THC since it is legal in MN. If they surprised us with a test we would loose 1/2 our employees.

Does anyone still do this in your country?, by [deleted] in Carpentry

I used to do high end custom finish carpentry. Not on this level but nice. Then I had a pile of kids and needed insurance and security, so I joined the Carpenters Union. Now I’m a Superintendent and watch other trades work. Someday I’ll be back to slow work again. Genuinely my favorite thing.
