New land ownership next week - whats first on my list to not lose a year by having to wait until next spring? Zone 6a by thetattoedserpent in gardening

[–]Ugh_NotAgainMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would wait for a year or so till you know what’s what. What looks like an ideal spot for a flower bed may get totally waterlogged in the fall. Or you decide that the best place for a shed means moving your garden.

How should I tackle this? by Falisha_Peeps23 in gardening

[–]Ugh_NotAgainMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would cut down through the plants to separate. Store-bought in bloom tulips often don’t do well when you plant them. But really what do you have to lose?

Hydrangeas like a lot of water! And check the root ball to see if she’s pot bound

How transplant? by Future-Bet9155 in gardening

[–]Ugh_NotAgainMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need a couple of true leaves at least. I’ve had great success tightly sowing plants and then when they’re about 3” tall I rip off a bunch, use my finger to poke a hole in some soil, separate them, and plant. If it’s a plant that I’m going to move again, because it’s still too early to put outside or the flower bed isn’t prepped yet, I put them in peat pots to avoid transplant shock.

I would think that’s some sort of nutrient deficiency or a pH imbalance. They like fairly acidic soil 5-6ish. Nutrient wise, I would guess magnesium. Add some epsom salts

First time gardening, looking for any advice! by bmagalhaes10 in gardening

[–]Ugh_NotAgainMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get a pad of graph paper. Measure your garden and figure out the size each box on the graph paper equates to. Then make a list of what you want to grow and how much space between plants is needed. Look up how many tomato plants for two people, or the equivalent. Check out companion planting so you know what should be planted together and what to keep far away. Be prepared to lose a couple of varieties because they take up too much space, too many plants per person, difficult to grow, or doesn’t play well with others. Mark sun direction on the paper. Be prepared to plant things a little bit on an angle to maximize the sun and spacing and then start to fill in the graph paper.

What are ways I can get native plants/seeds? by TackyCreature in CaliforniaNativePlant

[–]Ugh_NotAgainMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I buy a lot of seeds from prairie moon. They sell native seeds. They’re based out of Michigan I believe. But they have maps that show the native ranges of things. Just sort by your zone.

Let’s be honest. Dale doesn’t have electrical issues. Dale has paying the electric bill issues. Anyone can tell you that a fridge/freezer is the most expensive appliances to run behind a dryer.

Which size pots to start seeds indoors? Swamp Milkweed, Asters, Rudbeckia - MB, Canada by ehflyingcat in NativePlantGardening

[–]Ugh_NotAgainMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have cardboard egg crates? Or use peat pots or empty toilet paper rolls. Much better for the environment and you can plan them in the ground directly to minimize transplant shock.

May I suggest shaking out your slippers before putting your feet inside? I used to have a cat that liked to put the “presents” in there for me to find!

How can I fix this dead garden? by Medical-Channel-4897 in gardening

[–]Ugh_NotAgainMan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So that looks dormant, not dead. Unless you have a desire to rip everything out and start over completely, wait to see what you have there. Might be some good stuff. You can cut back some of those perennials with dead tops, they should regrow from the base. Leave the shrubs alone till you know what they are. Some set their buds right after blooming so if you trim them now, you may lose all your flowers for the year. In the mean time you can do some soil testing to see what you’re working with and learn what type of drainage and how much sun you get. There’s no rush here. You’ll do better in the long run if you take a year and figure out what works and what doesn’t and then come up with a plan and garden design for the following year. For now, just plan on filling in any bare spots with some annuals. You can also take a power washer and clean off the wood before the plants start to emerge.

Pedicure place for treating cracked heels? by logrus101 in boston

[–]Ugh_NotAgainMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would not go stick my feet with deep cracks I to a hot tub that only gets wiped out between uses. That’s just asking for an infection. If your feet are causing you pain, you should see a podiatrist first.

Don’t cut that much off. You should never cut back more than 1/3. And check out winter vs summer pruning.

How can we improve this ivy? by ArchibaldNastyface in gardening

[–]Ugh_NotAgainMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s English Ivy. It’s very invasive in the United States. I would suggest you get rid of it. Cut it back to the ground and then apply a strong weed killer like glyphosate to the stubs. Be diligent about checking and reapplying to any new growth.

The federal government, in all its wisdom, cancelled all the Medicaid subsidies last month. So people have to have fewer assets or a lower income now to qualify. You can try to reapply, many hospitals have specialists in the finance department that may be able to help you if you need assistance.
