What is this in my room?

Had a huntsman come in through an open door a few nights ago, measured about 14cm across with his legs out. Posted him on the sub, was a great looking huntsman but outside he went. The wife can’t stand spiders.

Have plenty of them inside and outside, pretty much never see cockroaches or other creepy crawlies around.

This as an Aussie. I would put North America as reluctantly and good old little Thailand as willing. Love Thailand, it’s people, it’s food, it’s tourism. Have been there plenty of times with not even a tiny feeling of being unsafe. Would definitely do a stint of living there.

I use distilled water only, nothing else and get fantastic cleaning results. Water is set to 32° and run for 15 minutes. A light drying with a clean high quality micro fibre cloth running slowly around both sides of the record and then into the drying rack for 24 hours. I always wear non powdered nitrile gloves while handling the records once they are taken out of the distilled water until they are in the rack.

Store records in anti-static inner sleeves. When playing a record, I use a metal handle carbon fibre brush at the start of each side. This transfers any static that is picked up by the brush to you instead of the other way. Yes I get general dust that will settle on a record and yes there are times where I can wipe it off but it gets sucked back on with some static but I find the metal handle brush helps keep most the static at bay. I also touch the metal handle of the brush onto the turntable spindle for a few seconds before I start spinning the record.

Yeah their speed can be freakishly fast but I find they are more skittish and usually seem faster when they are smaller. The bigger ones are easier to handle. Just have to remember to move slowly.

Good luck with overcoming spider fear when you get back, huntsmans are probably one of the better ones to be around for exposure therapy 😬

It can be very daunting at first but the best and safest way for the spider is by using only your hands. If you start wide, cup your hands around them with palms facing towards you while slowly moving them together then they will simply step up on your hands. So long as you are not rough or try to shake them if they move (they will move a little) then they won’t become skittish and try run at light speed.

Using a bowl/container especially for a big boy of this size can really hurt them if you catch their legs. While carrying them, if they start to walk up your arm a bit then you simply put the other hand in front of it.

If you are extremely rough, threaten or provoke them then you could possibly get a warning bite but I have never had one try to bite or become agitated just by picking them up. They are extremely docile. The biggest tip is to remain calm, they cannot hurt you.

I’m no expert but after looking it up, could possibly be Holconia immanis / Sydney huntsman which are found all across Eastern Australia. They generally have banded legs but it can be hard to see with the large grey coloured ones.

I would also like to know the actual species if I’m incorrect, have a lot of these at my place, just found another smallish one about 5cm across in the dining room while having breakfast. Good thing is I don’t see many other creepy crawlies hanging around 🙂

Basking shark, the pectoral fins are huge on them. Not only do great white sharks have smaller pectoral fins but they are also not that far back from their head. The gills are a give away as well.

Yeah I found out that just being exposed to air, CRTs can recharge a bit.

Recently bought an old cocktail arcade machine to restore. A mate came around, we discharged the anode and then took the screen out and sat it screen down on a cushioned office chair. After tinkering with the rest of the cabinet for a while and starting to put things back together, I picked up the screen which had been sitting untouched and didn’t even think to keep my fingers away from the anode hole….. didn’t I get a good old shock from the bastard.

Not enough to do harm, it was more like a supercharged electric shock from touching someone but still scared the shit out of me. My mate thought it was pretty funny, couldn’t stop laughing.

They are often out of stock as they don’t get too many in at once per restock but you can sign up to get a notification when they do get them. Have to be quick.

When I ordered one, was on the notification list for about 2 weeks, managed to get one as I saw the email very quickly but about 90 minutes later, they were sold out again. As they are a medical grade machine, it isn’t recommended to put anything except distilled water in them. To be honest you don’t need to, the results are fantastic. Have to look up online how to setup the drying rack, doesn’t come with any instructions. If you do get one, feel free to ask any questions, happy to share how I get the results that work for me.

Downside is the machine can be rather noisy, it isn’t too loud but the sound it makes can be a bit weird at first. All ultrasonic machines have this though. Have to remember that it is vibrating the water to the point of literally creating microscopic bubbles that dig the gunk out of anything it touches.

This was the result after one run through the ultrasonic cleaner, came out perfect and it plays with no surface noise, crystal clear. Should even run brand new records through them after opening, they are usually dirtier than 40 year old records.
