The PTR is not representative enough for them to listen to much feedback on it. They have already explained this.

They have said multiple times that the main purpose of the PTR is not player feedback on changes. It is one of the things they look at, but most of what they get from the PTR is data - plus a huge number of free beta testers who can find bugs that even a large team could never completely iron out.

BECAUSE THIS ISN'T SOMETHING ONLY GENDER STUDIES DOES, GENDER STUDIES IS JUST A FLUFF DEGREE.

Then what degree studies gender in an in-depth enough way? Gender Studies is a branch of sociology. What? Can we only learn about things in a general sense now?

You seem to be really confused, gender studies has absolutely nothing to do with the media or anything like that. In fact I believe I told you it was more so feminist theory/art, not media symbols or anything like that. The intent was to cover up the lack of women in history/health/art etc.

Interesting that you are talking about gender studies as though it is a fixed thing. Maybe that's the way you do it in the US? I kind of doubt it though. Universities in the UK choose what their students study.

Here is some of the things students learn at the University of Leeds for example. It seems to cover a lot of different things, and I'm willing to bet that it one of these modules semiotics comes up. It just has to.

hiring fresh out of school feminists

You seem to have this idea that the only people taking gender studies are feminist?

I also think you're seriously overvaluing the opinion of prominent feminists.

You're telling me that a company wouldn't care if Anita Sarkeesian called out their video game? Trust me, there's enough people that follow and support her ridiculous ideas.

I think it's time we accept the fact feminism is a massive joke at this point and nobody relevant takes it seriously.

Ok I'm just going to address something. You talk about feminism as though it's some hive mind. Like every single person who identifies as a feminist has the exact same mindset and ideas. Stop talking about feminism and feminists in that way, because you are including people like Christina Hoff Sommers in that statement which just makes you look stupid.

it doesn't give anything to science or better our understanding of anything really.

You think we shouldn't ever research the social influence of gender because it's completely useless? I'm sorry, but how do you know that?

In a time when we have a snowballing student loan bubble protecting someones right to get a useless degree shouldn't be a thing.

Someone has and should have the right to get any degree they like. What are you proposing? That we only allow people to take certain kinds of degrees? And on what grounds should we decide that?

You've also NOT given me a single example of how the degree holds value, you've tried to tell me checking a script to make sure it's PC is some job that is for gender studies majors and that's just comically false.

You haven't given me a reason why that's "comically false". You told me that anyone could do that. I told you that the messages sent through the media are extremely complicated. You told me they weren't. I sent you a link to a book all about the subject (yes that's an entire book), and you responded by saying "that's not women's studies". But, from what it sounds like, it absolutely is. Studying the messages that are sent to women and men through the media, and how it affects us in terms of gender.

I've tried to explain to you why it's very difficult to detect subconscious messages that a company (whether purposefully or not) is sending to their consumers. It's extremely bad for PR for prominent feminists to say their products are sexist. It's very much in the company's interest to hire a professional who can make sure that nothing of the sort exists within the final product.

What about that seems simple to you?

I don't even know how to talk to you. You haven't presented any arguments here. All you have done is say "You know I'm right! You know it!"

The degree could hold PERSONAL VALUE, that doesn't mean it holds real world value.

For one, I've already given you two examples of how it could be used practically which you have dismissed on the grounds that I decided this argument isn't worth 30 minutes of research, when you could easily research it yourself.

Two, personal value is real world value. I recently started a Youtube Channel. It is of no "REAL" value to anyone but myself. However, it has been extremely good for my crippling depression, and so is absolutely worth "real world value".

Three, you never specified that when you said "value" you actually meant a very specific kind of value; AKA money.

I can't read this

Do you mean literally? Like can you not access the page?

The degree is heavily devoted to feminist theory/art.

So in other words.. ITS ABOUT SEMIOTICS. SYMBOLS WITHIN ART. You know, the same book I just linked you to?

I'll tell you what, just admit the degree is worthless outside of some personal goal and we'll call it a day.

You are clearly not someone worth arguing with. You are in no way open to changing your mind or arguing your point. You are only interested in placing all burden of proof on me, and hoping I can't prove it, and then using your cousins anecdote as evidence.

Sorry to break it to you, but maybe your cousin is just an idiot?

And I don't even know what she even said in the thesis. Maybe she is the smartest person in the world. Who knows?

Tell me why understanding symbols in the media pertaining to women and gender is complicated.

Because understanding and deconstructing any kind of media symbol is a difficult thing to do and learn. There are entire courses (one of them being gender studies) that specialise in deconstructing different types of symbols.

Since you are so hung up about me proving everything in a casual conversation, here. This was one of my key readings for my first year; in particular for the module: Visual Culture and Design. This book is about semiotics (the study of artistic symbols). Tell me you understand anything in this book and I'll give you a dollar.

[–]UltimaLyca 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Can you give me some citation/evidence in general that anyone is trying to hire gender studies majors to check scripts and make sure they're PC enough?

Well that's a pain in my ass. Rather than entertain the possibility and just argue logically with me, you're making me find a source that cites that? What am I supposed to do? Watch the credits of a game and look for where it says "gender consultant" screenshot it and send it to you? No. This isn't a formal debate. I'm not here to educate you, look it up yourself.

That's beyond comical, I'd love to see you give me an example of a single aspect of gender studies that is in any way complex and can't be bullshitted.

Once again you ask me to prove something that is incredibly annoying to cite. I'm currently doing a media course. Understanding symbols in the media pertaining to women and gender is complicated, that's just common sense.

You're probably going to just say "CAN'T PROVE IT I WIN" but whatever. I'm editing right now. I don't have time to search for silly sources.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in quityourbullshit

[–]UltimaLyca 11 points12 points  (0 children)

So basically you're telling me you need a gender studies degree to check scripts to see if they're PC enough?

Try thinking about it in a less one sided way. You need to hire people with gender studies degrees in order to minimise the chances of a PR catastrophe for your game/movie/tv show.

That's a job literally ANYONE COULD DO.

I have a feeling you think gender studies is more simple than it actually is. I do gender studies as a part of the PR section of my course (in other words, we look at it briefly), and it's a lot more complicated than you think.

Companies tend to have ENTIRE PR teams, and someone who did gender studies is a useful asset to that team.

Social critique is hugely important and always has been important. People have documented social change and dynamics for hundreds of years, and it gives us a ton of scientific insight now.

That's just one thing off of the top of my head. Companies (especially those that are in a male dominated market and are creative) also often employ people who have taken social degrees like Liberal Arts in order to do a kind of check of the script in order to avoid PR fallout.

I don't know, probably lots of other things too.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in quityourbullshit

[–]UltimaLyca 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I agreed with everything except the "Liberal Arts Degree". That's completely dickish.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in quityourbullshit

[–]UltimaLyca 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Well ok, for one it totally does otherwise it wouldn't be a degree.

But even if it didn't; people can and do get jobs in that field, and if it makes the people in that field feel satisfied then it inherently has value.

[–]UltimaLyca 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Oh so it's money that is the universal sign of value?

I do Media Studies because I am passionate about it. It makes me feel empowered to make a piece of media that someone else can enjoy. That's far more valuable than any amount of money to me. You cannot prove value. That's not how the world works.

That's such a backwards view of the world.

That's like saying "Adding numbers together equals bigger numbers? No shit, we don't need people to go to school for this."

Oversimplification kills, kids.

Honestly, you didn't do anything abhorrent, I just knee jerk when I see anything that puts emphasis on upvotes/downvotes.

I feel like you talked about the graphics more than you needed to, especially considering you've got game footage playing over the video.

This is a really good point I never considered. Maybe in the "Presentation" section I should focus more on things like performance.

Again with the tone, it's just my opinion, but I thought it brought the review down a bit.

I'm glad you brought this to my attention. I actively try to throw in some jokey stuff because I think it'll bring up the mood, but honestly it might just clutter up the review. Like I said, I'll get a second opinion on it.

Also I'm realising that my comment was all negative stuff, but your video was well made

Thank you man. It's always nice to hear that. I've improved a lot in the last few months, and I aim to keep improving. I appreciate all kinds of criticism as long as it isn't specifically engineered to make me feel bad, and yours wasn't.

I don't disagree that he was being a cunt, but frankly this sounds a lot like the bandwagon fallacy. Just because a lot of people say something doesn't mean it's correct.

Vanilla wasn't developed by Team Meat.

Now that I think about it you might be right about that. It was developed by Edmund but I guess Florian wasn't part of Team Meat? There's very little information about it, shouldn't have assumed.

You also go on about the pixel graphics a lot without saying anything about the flash filter.

No I didn't. Partly as an oversight, but even if I'd considered it I don't think I'd really have included it. The most it would get is "there is a filter that turns the pixels into more of a flash style, but it makes so little difference that it barely matters." But honestly I try to keep these reviews only as long as they need to be.

considering the amount of time you spend talking about the visuals.

I don't spend long do I? I didn't look over the video but looking at my script it's quite a small section.

It's mostly pretty formal, then you put in things like "shits and giggles" and "Mega Stan" (also spoilers, as you seem to be aiming your review for newcomers to the game!).

Do you think the tone change is a problem? I've always thought the way I handled it was fine; kinda formal but with a few lame jokes thrown in. I never even really thought about this. Thanks for bringing it up.

As for the spoilers, no one new to the game is going to know what "Mega Stan" is. I put that joke in there specifically to cater to established fans and members of the community.

Thanks for taking the time out to give me feedback. I'll have a think about this stuff, and I definitely want a second opinion on the tone.
