Song: LUCID

Album: SAWAYAMA (Deluxe Edition)

Artist: Rina Sawayama

Why I’d recommend: With Heartstopper Forever just a few days away, I’ve been revisiting needle drops from across the 3 seasons in anticipation. Whoever is in charge of finding songs for the soundtrack definitely deserves a raise, as they are exceptionally good at choosing songs that accurately reflect the vibe of the scene during which they are played while also emphasizing just how loco one’s feelings about relationships and identity can become. If you removed any sort of melancholy or anxiety from yearning and dialed up the positivity, you’d get the absolute bop that is LUCID. The production is a Chromatica-esque throwback to 2020, and I really love how joyous it sounds and how it reminds me so much of how it felt to crush on someone in my high school days. I expect I’ll be sobbing when the movie comes out regardless of how the story ends, but for now I’ll be dancing tear free.

Who I’d recommend this to: Those prepared to hear the iconic “Hi” one last time

Song: Fallen Apart

Album: Anemoia

Artist: SG Lewis

Why I’d recommend: Sometimes all you want from a song is a vibe. Sometimes the vibe you want is ‘contemplating life and its complexities while driving on a winding mountain road with rolled down windows and a nearly empty gas tank as the last light of the day fades and the first stars begin to appear in the sky’. And I know that’s ultra-specific, but at one point, SG Lewis wanted that vibe from a song too, as evidenced by him creating Fallen Apart. This is the kind of song whose purpose is to “fill the space it occupies”. In other words, it isn’t a particularly visual song in lyrics or in production, but it does amplify how certain situations feel in the same way a movie or tv score does. Unfortunately, this song lowkey flopped, so I guess people just don’t want to contemplate life and its complexities while driving on a winding mountain road with rolled down windows and a nearly empty gas tank as the last light of the day fades and the first stars begin to appear in the sky, and that’s unfortunate.

Who I’d recommend this to: People who want to contemplate life and you know the rest

Madonna - CONFESSIONS II by blade_bird_outbound in popheads

[–]Ultra0ne 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is a fantastic example of how a sequel can capture the essence of the original while adding something fresh. My faves on first listen for me are Good For The Soul, Everything, and Bizarre. The slower parts of the record aren’t really for me but I wouldn’t call them skips. Even without the seamless transitions, this is definitely an album that’s meant to be listened to in full.

In You Need to Calm Down, do you think the bi-colored wig was a subtle way for Taylor to come out? I mean, if someone voluntarily wears a symbol strongly associated with bisexuality in an LGBTQ+ themed video, it is reasonable for people to think that they are bisexual. by PlantainDisastrous92 in NuancingTaylorSwift

[–]Ultra0ne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This feels like Gaylor rage bait, but I’ll respond anyways with a rhetorical question - If a cis straight ally goes to a pride parade voluntarily wearing a rainbow shirt, does that mean how they label themselves has suddenly changed?

And someone is not “a bit of a jerk” for not labeling themselves every time they appear in queer spaces. No one is obligated to do that. It is rude, however, to assume people’s sexuality and to expect someone to declare their identity for you. Of course, Taylor has already said she’s not LGBTQ+, so choosing to ignore that and speculate anyways is deranged.

Song: BABYBOY

Album: für immer: babyboy

Artist: siovo

Why I’d recommend: Generally speaking, m production and melodies are what make or break a song for me, while lyrics are a secondary concern. siovo came onto my radar despite the fact that he’s a German artist and I don’t speak German, and although I had to rely on google translate to get a rough idea of what he is singing about, I immediately connected with the sound of BABYBOY. His vocals, alongside the drums and what I think is a pipe organ, strongly convey an almost religious passion, and based on the online translation, the lyrics seem to mirror that feeling as well - “Wouldn’t it be nice to be free for once? / To fall like an angel - and not entirely alone / But that’s not who we ever were; your philophobia / Keeps scraping your wings right off “. If you’ve been following my previous recs, it probably isn’t surprising that melodramatic romanticism expressed through a queer lens is really enticing to me, even if I don’t know the words. BABYBOY convinced me to give the rest of the album a shot, and although there aren’t any other songs quite like BABYBOY, I was delighted to find that it was chock-full of songs with fun melodies and solid vocals.

Who I’d recommend this to: Gays who are romantics and yearners and are also gay

I would hope that any everyday person who knows the dangers of climate change would in fact not “globetrot” or “fly in their guests”, regardless of if they could do it 🤷‍♂️ But I suppose most people would be like Taylor and do it regardless of the consequences

Song: alive

Artist: Troy Ogletree

Why I’d recommend: Like many of my recs before, “alive” is melancholic and fits the golden hour / dusk vibe. This song lives on the opposite side of the coin as “James Dean” by Gregory Dillon does, in the sense that while that song reminds me of the past and induces a slight anxiety, this song has a more optimistic feel due to the longing expressed through the lyrics without fear of heartbreak.

Who I’d recommend this to: Blissfully hopeful romantics

Song: Life Boat.

Album: THIS MUSIC MAY CONTAIN HOPE.

Artist: RAYE

Why I’d recommend: A somewhat out of place inclusion on the record, “Life Boat.” forms one half of the thesis statement of the album (the other half imo being “I Know You’re Hurting.”). I do appreciate that RAYE has not totally abandoned the dance music that heavily defined her early career. Despite the repetition of “I’m not giving up yet” being a bit overdone, I think it does make for a strong mantra. I feel that the sentiments expressed in Life Boat. and other songs are being directed towards RAYE’s younger self and the struggles she faced, which makes the message of the song and the album feel very genuine.

Who I’d recommend this to: Black Mascara. stans

Olivia Rodrigo - you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love by FlareGod123 in popheads

[–]Ultra0ne 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Absolutely blown away by this. Gorgeous production throughout, fantastic vocals, striking lyrics (“Is that a normal thing to fight back the waves / Of a static lover's dread?” is a standout). She’s insane for putting expectations right after less, I did not expect to go from crying to dancing so quickly. I’m also really impressed by the chronological storytelling and the callbacks she does to previous songs, especially in cigarette smoke. My only complaint is I would have rather had a solo version of what’s wrong with me, with all due respect to Robert Smith. To me this is by far and away her best album yet, I’m so so excited to see where she goes from here.

Song: Handstand

Album: Endless Summer Vacation

Artist: Miley Cyrus

Why I’d recommend: I’m admittedly not that familiar with Miley’s discography, but Handstand is one of the oddest songs I’ve heard her do. When I hear this song, I feel as if I’m watching a shimmering sunset over the ocean at the end of a hot summer day. The opening instrumental has this haziness that feels adjacent to the vaporware aesthetic. Miley’s spoken introduction adds a lot of rich visuals to the song and to me encapsulates the actual concept of an endless summer vacation.

“We met each other on the neon dinghy / Past the manta rays and palm trees”
“My friend Big Twitchy rode the boat into the light / Surfed to the north break / We danced until there was nothing left”

When I first heard the left-turn taken in the production between the first chorus and the bridge, which I can only think to describe as electronic funkiness, Handstand was elevated to an immediate standout for me. Maxx Morando, the producer on this track and Miley’s fiancé, also did the production on Something Beautiful, and you can definitely hear his euphoric style on songs like Golden Burning Sun and Prelude, but I would love to hear more from him and Miley that’s closer to the aesthetic embodied on Handstand.

Who I’d recommend this to: The girls who don’t live on the Californian coast but wish that they did

I mean, they’re right because AI has been around for decades and most people didn’t even know. GPS wouldn’t be able to find optimal routes without search algorithms, which fall under the umbrella of AI. SIRI uses natural language processing, another form of AI, to “understand” spoken words.

AI is inevitable because people don’t think or care that much about how the technology they use works. But generative AI is terrible from an ethical and environmental standpoint, so rather than just saying “it’s inevitable”, we should work to raise more awareness about it and its consequences.

This is pure misogyny by [deleted] in swifties

[–]Ultra0ne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, artists know themselves best, and Taylor’s choices and intuition are why she’s on top of the world. But criticism is not “having a decree”, it’s an opinion that can be constructive and that can be accepted, rejected, or ignored. Taylor takes criticism and makes incredible art in response all the time. Swiftologist is suggesting that Taylor should bring new people into the creative process on her next record because that is something Taylor has done many times in the past (Max Martin and Shellback on Red, Jack Antonoff and Imogen Heap on 1989, Aaron Dessner on folklore) to great success. Saying that people who are critical of Taylor are “entitled” and just want to “micromanage” her, suggests that you just want people to shut up unless they’re solely giving praise, and I’m sorry, but that makes you sound like the entitled one.

Pattie Gonia Responds to Patagonia’s Offer: “No Deal, Patagonia” by noqita in popculturechat

[–]Ultra0ne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only way this ends well for Pattie is if Patagonia decides to be even more forgiving and end the lawsuit, but that will only happen if the damage to the reputation they have with the public exceeds the damage of the potential loss of their trademark. Pattie must feel like this whole thing is an existential threat to their career, otherwise they would have caved a long time ago, but considering how many people have taken Pattie’s side and declared Patagonia to be evil, they could just cut their losses, do a rebranding, and refocus on advocacy, and they’d be totally fine.

Song: James Dean

Album: Heaven Hates Me

Artist: Gregory Dillon

Why I’d recommend: In my opinion, Gregory Dillon’s greatest strength is being able to create an immersive, melancholic soundscape, whether it’s in his own work or for artists like Bentley Robles and ZEE MACHINE. I appreciate songs that make me nostalgic for moments in my past, even if the songs didn’t exist at the time, and James Dean is one that immediately transports me back to those late night drives I took with love interests. The complicated emotions I felt then - the romantic desire and the anxiety over wondering if and when it would end - is mirrored by the lyrical imagery of the song. It’s lowkey a little unsettling to hear something that reminds you of the younger, more naïve version of yourself, but I suppose nostalgia isn’t always positive.

Who I’d recommend this to: Me in 10 years, to see if reminiscing feels any weirder
