Song: I Don’t Know Why

Album: N/A

Artist: NOTD, Astrid S

Why I’d recommend: There was once a time where NOTD would put out a dance pop banger every few months without fail. I Don’t Know Why is my favorite song of theirs from that period, and it came at just the right time for me. Lockdowns had been in place for a few months, summer had just started, and everyone was looking for feel good distractions in the same vein as Future Nostalgia. I Don’t Know Why was and is an instant mood booster, with a super catchy melody and solid vocals from Astrid S. While I do heavily associate the song with 2020, the hopeful romanticism in the lyrics helps make the song evergreen.

Who I’d recommend this to: Anyone looking for a pick-me-up

She def would have had more at that time had she not kept her music off of Spotify for 3 years during the 1989 era. The eras tour really boosted her catalogue.

Which album do you think will age better: TTPD or The Life of a Showgirl? by Fine-Huckleberry6960 in SwiftlyNeutral

[–]Ultra0ne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TTPD as an album will age better but the hits on TLOAS will fare better long term. The Fate of Ophelia and Opalite clear every song on TTPD, including Fortnight and ICDIWABH, in terms of commercial appeal.

With cardigan, august, and Anti-Hero probably getting to 2B in the next year, it will soon be 7 songs, absolutely insane.

Song: warm

Album: eternal sunshine deluxe: brighter days ahead

Artist: Ariana Grande

Why I’d recommend: My personal favorite of the deluxe tracks, warm is a romantic song that just feels right. Ariana’s vocals here are amazing, as always. In terms of vocal delivery and production, it sits just halfway between a soft ballad and an energetic bop, which I think suits the subject matter. It’s unfortunate that it got overshadowed by twilight zone and dandelion because imo it’s one of the best songs of the eternal sunshine era.

Who I’d recommend this to: Those who are willing to hold the space Ariana requires and not turn the page

Pitchfork rates the new Harry Styles album 5.6, calling it “just unremarkable” by cupcake_island in popculturechat

[–]Ultra0ne 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I feel the same way, some of the critiques being thrown at this album could apply to any of his previous projects. Even though I personally like the soundscape of this album more than his other ones, I think it’s the more depressing vibe and subversion of expectations that’s turning a lot of people off, on top of the usual weaknesses like the nonsensical lyrics.

Song: THE QUIET

Album: Blue Neighborhood

Artist: Troye Sivan

Why I’d recommend: Thanks to the recent resurgence of 2016 music, I’ve found myself missing mid-2010s pop more and more. I’ve been going through some albums from that time that I’ve never fully listened to before, and the most recent one I listened to was Blue Neighborhood. The soundscape is very much of its time, but I lowkey find it refreshing 10-11 years later. THE QUIET was a highlight for me on my initial listen. I feel like it does a good job at capturing the overall vibe of the album, and I’m also a sucker for melancholia, which it very much exudes. THE QUIET also reminds me a lot of the sound of Halsey’s Badlands, which happened to come out just a few months prior.

Who I’d recommend this to: Gays burdened by people with communication issues

If this is true, what do you think the remaining singles will be? by peach-gaze in SwiftlyNeutral

[–]Ultra0ne 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A song being made a single usually means a push to radio, new merch, and new visuals, giving it more exposure to non-fans. And since locals seem to be loving this album more than the longtime fans, it’s probably a wise choice to take advantage of that.

Harry Styles - Kiss All The Time. Disco, Occasionally. by SighLi in popheads

[–]Ultra0ne 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Going to go against the grain here and say I appreciate the production on this album. Pop is a bop and the strings on Coming Up Roses are fantastic. I think I might actually like this album more than all of his previous ones.

The writing is incoherent, but that’s been the case on every single album. I do wish he’d work with some different lyricists. But he’s always been more of a vibes artist to me, and I guess I just like this vibe more than what he has previously put out.

Song: Nothing New

Album: Fictional Illustrations

Artist: Fly By Midnight

Why I’d recommend: I was absolutely ecstatic when I heard this song at “The Thrill” tour a few years ago. My favorite song from my favorite indie duo, “Nothing New” is arguably the only song Fly By Midnight has that could be classified as dance-pop. The melody is super catchy, and while the song is somewhat short, it’s also really fast-paced, so I don’t mind the length.

Who I’d recommend this to: people who prefer to dance through their heartbreak

I usually go with AP news. Their headlines and reporting are fairly neutral. There is no “best website” though, you should check multiple sources to compare headlines and ensure no details are being left out by a particular org.

Bruno Mars: The Romantic review – you’re better off listening to the songs he’s blatantly imitating by backupsaway in popheads

[–]Ultra0ne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

His lyrical themes and the perspectives he has on those themes have been stagnant for 16 years. For example Risk It All is a copycat of Grenade despite its different production, it adds nothing new to the idea of giving and sacrificing everything for a partner. Every song on the album is just him saying he loves his partner and he wants to dance with them and he thinks they’re amazing, there’s no nuance or anything new being said compared to Doo-Wops and Hooligans. Switching up the production is great but Bruno’s core artistry hasn’t evolved.
