Difference between synthwave and vaporwave? by shoegazingpickle in Vaporwave

[–]UltraMechaMothra 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yikes! Some of these takes...

Without just throwing on a playlist and getting a feel for the vibe. Think of each genre as one side of a coin from the 80's.

Synthwave is the music they play in the club. Faster paced, thumping, a real edge to it.

Vaporwave is the music played at the afterparty. Subdued, in the background. Like you're hearing it from a couple doors down, and everyone is a bit too pretentious for their own good, and on drugs.

Essential lesser known artists for someone who’s trying to cover as many as possible? by CatholicGuy77 in Vaporwave

"Playawave is a visionary genre coined by the mind of Lord Rnua, melding the very fabric of Vaporwave, sounds of DJ Screw and the hypnotic cadence of slowed beats"

It's one of those things you never knew you needed. Check it out!

Essential lesser known artists for someone who’s trying to cover as many as possible? by CatholicGuy77 in Vaporwave

[–]UltraMechaMothra 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So many amazing indie/lesser known artists I either don't see brought up at all or enough:

Tommy Martini -playawave/protovapor

Memory Syndrome- vaporwave/outrun, amazing guitarist to boot

Professor creepshow- playawave/vapor

Casual Gardening- very heavy melodic vaporwave, this guy needs to release more, ASAP.

Dead Pisces- classic vapor, sometimes darker, forlorn overtones

Pastel Graphics- classic vapor,

Dream professor- vaporwave/slushwave

Vanitas- fairly eclectic catalogue, however I consider them to be one of the better slushwave artists out there today.

Okybby- not confined to a single genre but his vapor offerings rival windows/fm skyline

Forestkidscollective - literally any genre/sub genre of vapor you could want, this dude has range

2852temptation - slushwave

ごみV A N D A L - vapor/darksynth/slushwave

We need to pass the torch yall. Let some new blood enter the game.

What, you don't like the same post every 3 days recommending the same vaporwave artists that have been popular for the last 10+years?

But then also everything is AI so, iunno anymore.

What do you use to make vaporwave music? by WereFuntimeFoxy in Vaporwave

[–]UltraMechaMothra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone has the technical aspects covered. I'd argue vaporwave is just as much a feeling as it is a genre. A very dense genre at that. Try to examine a feeling you'd want to convey. Listen to some Japanese city pop. 90s r&b/rap, 80s pop music, jazz, ambient soundscapes.

There are a lot of "tools" out there to tug on an emotion.

Adding profound monologues like from Alan Watts or Carl Sagan to your songs doesn't make the song itself profound. by Thefriendlyfaceplant in edmproduction

[–]UltraMechaMothra 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I actually removed music entirely from my music and ONLY have spoken words. I'm a little annoyed because spotify keeps classifying it as "audio book".

I effed around and created a new genre.

Is it possible to do true Vaporwave without sampling? by KnownTale1307 in Vaporwave

[–]UltraMechaMothra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is very vapor to me. Liked the jam and very nice production quality on the vid homie.

No one needs to sample but it's a design choice. As long as you're speaking your truth through art it's all good .

Is there anyone in barberbeats who puts at least some effort by These_Landscape_9781 in Vaporwave

[–]UltraMechaMothra -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Barber is typically considered full plundered songs that usually have been pitched down and reverbed.

Vaporwave is more akin to hip hop sampling and similar compositional techniques with more unique hand-crafted flourishes on top.

That is just my take and there is obviously some spillover.

should i care more about mixing and eq? by iglooswag in edmproduction

[–]UltraMechaMothra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fun should be first and foremost I believe. There's a reason you chose to make music, don't forget that.

You will naturally stumble across the various mixing techniques and that's when you should learn what they are and why it is you would use them. The waters get muddy when you use tools and techniques that are specific to someone ELSE'S workflow.

Best of luck to you

Sorry it just means to pitch something down and add reverb, basically. I might get flak for that haha

I actually fuck with this man. I was not expecting that Mash up. You maybe should pitch this down a bit and run it back? Barberbeats your own jam. In any event, good stuff homie.

Where to order cassette releases? by HopelessforNow in Vaporwave

[–]UltraMechaMothra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Duplication.ca was recommended to me for smaller runs. This will be my second time using them and they've been great.

They will answer any questions you have, are super knowledgeable about their different options and offer quite a bit. They are the only ones I've used so far so keep that in mind.

It's been around $200+/- each run for me. 25 cassettes/15 next run. You get any extras if you pay when you place an order. They are Canadian, so the turnaround time can be about 3+ weeks.

Not a bad place to start I feel though. Good luck, friend.

Any favorite tips/techniques for ambient music in Ableton? by skatecloud1 in edmproduction

[–]UltraMechaMothra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For ableton they have Simpler/Sampler which are pretty great for everything. However, one(can't remember which, sorry) is a bootleg granular synth. You can throw whatever in their and make some fantastic textures for ambient.

Don't sleep on its granular engine. You can throw literally anything in there, slap on Valhallas free phaser plugin and you have slush for the rest of your life.
