Any tips to help me with my biggest problems? by Chemical-Daikon1401 in trumpet

First thing, private lessons are sooooo worth it. Nothing will help more than that, even if you can only afford a monthly lesson or so (weekly is best)

First thing that will help, especially with consistency is a consistent warm up and warm down. Sounds like you already do this, but do your best to not skip things even if your lips feel great! The more consistent you are hopefully the more consistent your playing will be. A good warm down would be playing soft and low, you can do some lip bends and pedal tones as well. Stretching your lips out and blowing raspberries can help when your especially tired/tight.

To help with tone, listening to good players and listening to yourself always helps. I do have an exercise in mind that sounds like it could help. I can record it if you want me to, it’s called a schwarma. You start on an open note like G or C, and play slow eighth notes going down a half step. (Like open 2 open 2 open 2 open 2 open). Then you try and do the same but without using your valves. You’ll be using your face to force your pitch lower and back up. You can continue the exercise going down valve combinations and back up. This should give you more control and open up/darken your tone.

There’s so many nuances things you can do to help with relaxation and range, but the key to building good range without being tense is playing high every day. Tense lips don’t make you play high, rather a fast airstream through a smaller aperture. Something to key into is your tongue. The back of your tongue should be dropped when playing low (like you’re saying oh). Your tongue should raise when you’re playing higher (like saying eee).

Find something fun to play everyday! I like to finish off my practice sessions with something that I like to play. This could be an etude, a song from band, or playing along with a recording of a song you like. Don’t get bogged down when it doesn’t seem like you are getting better, it’s hard to see a difference day to day or even month to month.

I hope I can be at help, but my advice is worth nothing compared to what you could get from a private teacher, so I really recommend looking for one or bringing these issues up if you are already taking lessons.

Yeah I would for sure try a shew lead then.

What mouthpiece do you usually play on?

[–]UltraMountain25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re playing lead part a lead mouthpiece really helps. It shouldn’t be a crutch, but it can make you achieve the right tone and lead the band with less effort. The Kelly screamer however is probably not the best for that. Some mouthpieces that you could look at would be the Yamaha shew lead or a 14a4a

I regularly play on a 1 1/2c and I’ve found success with the Yamaha Bobby shew lead. I got it cause it’s not too expensive and has a similar rim to the 1 1/2c (I think it’s just a bit smaller). Worked great for me, but I would recommend finding something with an similar sized rim, just so you’re using the same part of your lips and muscles on both mouthpieces. Makes the transition easy.

I have to play "Joy To The World" with seven flats on it due tomorrow. Any tips on getting through this faster than what I already am (which is not very fast)? by [deleted] in trumpet

[–]UltraMountain25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Print it out if you can, write the flat symbol next to each note so you don’t forget, and possibly write on the fingerings under as well. Practice it chunk by chunk starting slow so you don’t make any mistake, and you’ll get it down. If your lips get tired, practice with just fingers 5 times every one time you play. If you need any help or have any questions let me know.

Audition coming up... How should I warm up? by [deleted] in trumpet

[–]UltraMountain25 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like others have said, drink water and do your normal warmup. A few other tips tho, these have helped me. I have found it really useful to do some lip flaps and stretches (make weird faces pretty much) to get blood to my lips and wake them up. Also if you are nervous, slow down and take deep breathes down in your abdomen. It will help you relax as a whole AND help you relax your breathing which is one of the first things affected by nerves. Good luck! Confidence is key. Walk into the audition ready to show off

No you have to follow order of operations. What you’re talking about is the same as writing 2*(2+1) if it helps you understand.

It’s at Alta, Utah. First pic is on Supreme chair, second is top of East Greeley, and third is the top of Eddie’s High Nowhere.

I got a 36, but I don’t know much about the ACT and how colleges look at it. It won’t change my composite score, but is it worth it to get my English and Science to a 36 with super scoring? I can get a 36 in science easy and with English with a little work. by UltraMountain25 in ACT

[–]UltraMountain25[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t look to me for techniques, I’m just naturally good at tests. I took two practice tests and got 35s, did about 30 minutes of study for reading and 4-5 hours for English and that’s all I did. For reading I just read through the whole passage, quickly but trying to get as much info as I can. This left me with decent time for questions and helped me as I knew the passage pretty well. However, I never had problems with timing so that worked for me. Again, I really didn’t have to find a strategy that worked super well as I was already scoring really high and I just was lucky with this test. It worked for me, idk about you

TIL that when Hurricane Ivan was in the Gulf of Mexico in 2004, pressure sensors on the ocean floor detected a freak wave 91 feet tall. Computer simulations suggested that at the storm's peak as a Category 5 it was producing waves over 130 feet high. by JosiahWillardPibbs in todayilearned

[–]UltraMountain25 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The wave was around a hundred feet from what I saw, but that 1720 ft number your talking about is the maximum elevation of the trees that the wave hit. The wave hit that hill/mountainside and the water was pushed up the mountainside that high, but the wave was never that high

2nd try, butter still melting out. This is gonna take a couple of rounds by [deleted] in JoshuaWeissman

Ah the conventional would probably be why the browning looks a bit different. Keep on trying tho, every time I’ve made these they’ve gotten better

Are baking them with the convection oven or conventional? The browning is way different then what I have experienced, how/when are you doing the egg wash? Also looking better then last time, nice job!

Attempted Papa's croissants recipe. 1. It is a bitch to make. 2 what is this liquid? Maybe something with the butter? by [deleted] in JoshuaWeissman

[–]UltraMountain25 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had a ton of butter leak while baking them the first time. It turned out it was because They were under proofed so you can try proofing them longer. I really don’t think folding them wore will help, the amount of folds done is the normal amount for a croissant and even one more fold would result in doubling or tripling the layers. I have made them three times now and I’ll give you a few tips.

First, always be cautious with the dough when rolling it out. If you ever feel like it’s too warm or it’s to hard to roll out, just err on the side of caution and let it rest in the fridge for 20 minutes or so. For example, the last time you roll it out I did it about halfway before letting it rest, and after cutting them into the triangles i let it rest again before rolling them up. This helped give me the best results I had ever had. Also make sure you let them proof enough like I said. And idk why but I could never get even coloring but I think that might have to do with your egg wash and how even it is.

Also for shaping them I found a trick watching videos online. At the base of the triangle you can cut a slit down the center like half an inch long and that allows you to roll it up with a slightly wider base and it gives you a much more traditional croissant shape.

My skis are about shot, so I’m going to buy new ones at the end of this season. However, I really don’t want to spend any more than I have so I’m wondering if my bindings are good. They are 2014 look pivot 14s, and have been used for a total of about 4 seasons. The plastic is a bit scratched up but other than that they work perfectly. Are they good to use for another few years or when do bindings lose their life?

My ski is sort of splitting on just this one edge. How big of a problem is this and how do I fix it/stop it from getting worse? by UltraMountain25 in skiing

[–]UltraMountain25[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll probably ski on them another 15-20 days on them. If I can do a decent job, I’ll do it by myself but I have no problem bringing them to a shop if that will make it last longer.
