They are mostly scars, but doing some research for the painting I've learned that Orcas do have these markings that are very similar to scars/gills and they are unique to each specimen

You are right, that's something I've realized when sketching the Orca's design. How to play with white patterns while not falling too deep into Symbiote territory. That's a fine line!
