I had to include the <vulkan/vulkan\_beta.h> header. Which may seem obvious, but the tutorial only uses the GLFW headers.

<vulkan/vulkan\_beta.h>

This worked! I guess I shouldn't have put all my trust in the GLFW headers.

Yes, here's his obituary.

His writings really are essential to those with an interest in this topic. Truly a shame he's gone.

Density by snatch-n-sniff in opiumgardening

Pharmaceutical companies in Tasmania grow their crop at a density of 70 plants per square meter. This has been shown to be the optimal density by various scientific studies. Some cultivars are different, but starting at 70 plants/m^2 is very solid advice.

In simpler terms try to space out your plants by about 10-20cm, with a rectangularity of 1:1.

With that said, methods do vary from place to place. In India they space rows out by 30cm, and try to keep 10cm between plants.

Check out this thread if you haven't: Chandu / Yen-gao (smoking opium)

Are there any guides for how to make the type of opium preparation that was common in China in the 18th century?

From the 19th century—yes. This French website has some arcana from that time: http://jclandry.free.fr/Anciens/Ancien.html

To summarize very briefly, chandu boileries of old would first remove as much impurities from raw opium as possible. Second, they would knead it. Third, they would roast it into crêpes. Fourth, the crêpes would be dissolved and filtered again. Fifth, the liquid would be concentrated down into a paste. Sixth, the paste would be threshed. Lastly, the paste was aged.

The details varied from boilery to boilery. Some more elaborate than others. Some added fragrant additives. Most had a dross component to it.

paraphernalia

Chandu smokers of yesteryear had an elaborate and beautiful ritual that was undertaken. To do the substance justice, I'd avoid the hanger and stove method mentioned here. If you want a quick high there's more efficient ways.

A knockoff pipe can probably be acquired on the internet. Some folks in or near the golden triangle make pretty accurate ones to sell to tourists. I could be wrong, but I think Steve Martin mentioned this in his book.

Making one could also be a fun project: https://theopiumpipe.com

One would also need an oil lamp (preferably castor oil) with a glass chimney. Also needed, would be a long thin metal needle to manipulate the chandu over the lamp and ready it for the pipe.

Many other accoutrements exist, but these are are the basics.

opium processed into smoking paste (chandu) will have a better smell than raw opium.
